This is at least the third copy of the Whte Album I've purchased.everyone is a little better than the last one.A couple of years ago I replaced all of my Beatles cd's with the latest remastered ones except the White Album. The reason I did not replace it was because I had the serial numbered Anv.Edt.that I preordered from Amazon trying to get a low serial number.Well one day I got in a Beatles music mood and they all sounded great untill I got to the White Album.it was just not up to par with the other remastered cd's.So I bought the the latest remastered one. When I first put it on the first song was Back In The U.S.S.R. and I thought this is no better than the other copy I had,the jet sound was very harsh.Well I thought I would give the rest of the cd a chance.I was very happy, the rest was just great.great stereo seperation and all the instruments and volcals where wonderful.Maybe they need to someone like Alan Parsons a shot on the U.S.S.R.

VINYL - Superb soundafter buying "Let it Be" Apple remastered vinyl, I liked it so much I bought the "White" album. I'm very happy with the job they did on this LP. It's as good as the Let it Be remaster. There are many more ways to screw up a LP versus encode and burn a CD or MP3. Remastering analog is as much an art as it engineering. Even though they started with a high res digital file, there is none of the usual harshness or compressed sound you get on CD. The bass is solid and the top is free of any sibilance. The record sounds sweet and clean all the way with zero surface noise. Beatles music like it was meant to be heard. BTW - The two LPs are nice and flat and if your's arrives with bumps send it back. There is no excuse for warped records in the 21st century.

While the music is classically great, I was very disappointed - as someone who was alive when the original LPs were issued - to find that the songs are all out of order on this 2 CD set! That very much mars the listening experience for me. Now I have to go in and rearrange them on a black CD in order to get the proper order. Hopefully I will be able to recreate the tight splicing of the original, too, which seems to be lacking at times here.

The most remarkable thing about the White Album to me is the amazing diversity of music contained within its tracks. I can't think of another record that comes close to matching it for the sheer diversity of styles and sounds. If you are bored listening to this one or can't find anything you like, well, you're a tough nut to crack. While I agree this is not an CD of their more famous tunes, many of the tunes on it are still (IMO) great and memorable. But when I listen to it I just marvel at how one band can put out such a smorgasbord of music that is so completely different and distinct. If you heard Rocky Raccoon and Helter Skelter and Honey Pie and Obladi-oblada in isolation, you would think they were songs played not only by completely different musical groups, but groups from completely different musical genre. The fact these guys were able to compose and perform such an incredibly varied display of music, and do it all so well, is to me, yet another testament to their greatness. Even something as bizarre as Revolution #9 somehow seems to fit in the cacophony of different sounds.I don't any other band that could pull off something like the White Album. It is truly an amazing, and unique, feat in the Rock history.

Ok so this release obviously gets a 5 rating just for the music. The package is great. And the SHM cd version is just that little bit more enjoyable than standard cd. Note...those who buy cds to rip them ...dont bother with the Shm disc...but if you still enjoy your audiophile cd player and your physical media....get the shm discs....imo...and yes it the same price as the hi res...but you cant collect the hi res. Go for it and get the ultimate version.

A perfect reissue. Bought this as a present for my wife as she doesn't like to spin her original collectible beatles vinyl regularly. She was thrilled to see the attention to detail given to recreating the original packaging, and the sound quality is spot on. Highly recommended. As for a review of the album itself... come on... it's the white album. If you don't know... shame on you.

The true Beatles audiophile will find this vinyl remaster very rewarding. You may throw away the CD (don't discard your original 1968 album, as tattered and worn as it may be ; that's a treasure); but the remaster is so much better! There is a certain quality that I can't exactly put my finger on; let's say that it is so much more "listenable." For instance, the jet engine noise on "Back in the USSR" is not as shrill and abrasive as I found it to be on the original recording, nor is the organ on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." While having a somewhat more subdued overall mix, all the instrumental details and vocal and percussion nuances are pronounced for the discernable listener, and the remix only enhances the integrity of the original recording. Like Tommy Lee Jones, aka "K" in "Men In Black," I will certainly have to buy the White Album again! This one is a keeper!

I vividly remember when this album was released; there was something about buying an album in a plain white cover that made you feel you were getting a bootleg recording. After the excesses of Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour, I was happy to hear the more straightforward music of this album. At the same time, one got a sense of impending doom as it seemed to be less of a band effort and more songs by individual members. As someone who came from the folk tradition, I enjoyed a lot of the songs. Donovan had shared his guitar technique with the Beatles while they were all in India with the Maharishi, and that was reflected here. In fact, much of the album was written in India. Little did we know that Sexy Sadie was originally written as "Maharishi, what have you done?"This remastered version sounds wonderful and brings me back to a pivotal time in my life.

My five star rating is for the book, not the subject pertaining to it. Neal Gabler has done a masterful job of presenting an incredibly well balanced synopsis of Walt Disney the person. I've read the negative Amazon reviews of this book, just for laughs. They hate the book because it would have caused them to change their opinions of Disney. Obviously they loved the man. Before I read the book I was a victim of the Disney Corporation spin machine that continues to this day to present its creator as the benevolent "Uncle Walt". I believed it. Now I see Disney for what he was. A visionary most certainly. Driving to perfection in whatever he attempted. But he was also a vile and contemptuous dictator in the studio. And something I never realized before, he never drew Mickey Mouse. A former employee of Disney's summed up the man beautifully when he said "Disney's true genius is in taking credit for other people's genius". So appropriate in describing Disney's climb to fame. He stepped over many people to get where he eventually got to. And he never gave those responsible for his fame the credit they so richly deserved.

Gabler's biography of Walt Disney is only for avid readers of history by examining all sides of this famous persons life, and at over 900 pages you have to be dedicated to press on into this well researched but ofttimes sad story.WARNING to die-hard D23 Disney fans... this is not the book you are seeking; because some of the personal struggles and business decisions you don't hear about are carefully described in these pages. The success of this luminary is covered, as are the dark times, the nervous breakdown, the bankruptcy, the anger... and I'll stop there for fear of hurting your feelings by going further into the darkness. Uncle Walt was a genius in every way... including troubled childhood which fueled his driven need to create the "Happiest Place on Earth."If you want to protect the happy Americana image of Walt Disney pick up the wonderfully cheerful biographies written by Bob Thomas or Pat Williams. They offer interesting stories of Walt, teach powerful life-application lessons about perseverance and creativity in a clever way that protects the fairy tale ending, while leaving out the dragons along the way.Hard reading, but explained a lot to me as a life-long resident of Orlando about how one mans driven desire really did change the world.

Having seen the terrific American Experience (PBS) two-parter on Walt Disney's life, I was interested to know more. This biography is very thorough and even handed, not skimming on criticism where it's due. We often forget that Walt Disney was a man before the name came to represent things. What we learn is that Walt Disney came from very little, never made it out of high school, and despite a few amazing successes, struggled to keep his studio alive following movies that failed at the box office. That those same movies are now considered classics that are integral parts of almost every Americans' childhood makes it almost unbelievable that they nearly ran Walt Disney out of the business of animation. All we know is the vast empire that exists today, but it's only because Walt Disney kept pushing forward in his desire to amuse and delight his inner boy in a way that also appealed to the broad need of most of us to have our stunted, immature selves likewise entertained with singing animals and amusement park fantasy lands. Neal Gabler does a great job capturing the boy, the man, the boy-man, and the man-child.Among fascinating personal details are Walt's distant relationship with his father, his somewhat naive idea of women including a marriage that seemed more convenient than passionate, but was faithfully maintained to the end of his life, Walt's warm and cold relationship with his brother and business partner Roy, and the death of his mother, for which he blamed himself.Gabler also touches on accusations often heard about Walt Disney of being a bad boss, a racist, and a Nazi sympathizer. Although he doesn't give Walt a pass, he does make sure to remind readers of the context of the times Disney lived in, and that there were no standards for animation and film workers as movies were just starting to find their feet in the 1920s and 30s.As a film history through one man's life, this book also reminds us that Disney innovated things we take for granted now-- things like sync sound in cartoons, color animation, camera animation stands that allowed depth of field, and storyboards. The world of movie animation would be very different if not for Walt Disney and the talent he fostered in his studio.

Praying with Icons, by Jim Forest

Review

Recent years have seen a marked increase in the popular and ecumenical appeal of icons (for centuries an integral feature of Orthodox Christianity). Jim Forest's Praying With Icons offers a simple introduction to the tradition of icons with special emphasis on their practical function in the spiritual life. Beautifully illustrated both with color plans and b/w photography, Praying With Icons begins with a history of iconography. Icons are not simply illustrations or "art" in the usual sense, but aids to prayer and contemplation, windows on the divine. Forest also provides a personal and practical guide to how one prays with icons. Forest then concludes with a series of meditative reflections on some of the most typical icons, including the Annunciation, the Nativity, Christ's Baptism, the Transfiguration, the Descent of the Holy Spirit, representations of Mary, the trinity, and the Saints. Praying With Icons is a superlative introduction to icons and is highly recommended for readers seeking to expand their spiritual experience to encompass the entire Christian spiritual legacy. --Midwest Book Review

I read Jim Forest's _Praying with Icons_ a few years ago when it first appeared. I just finished re-reading it, and am even more impressed this time around. Anyone familiar with Forest's other books knows how comfortably fluid his style is, and how insightful his ideas are. Both of these qualities make this the single best introduction to icons I know.To my mind, there are three different but interrelated aspects of this book that are especially worth noting. The first is Forest's argument that "beauty bears witness to God," and that in depicting holy things beautifully, icons enhance our relationship with the Divine. This is a point well worth considering. Too often, I fear, beauty in the context of worship is either dismissed as irrelevant (all that matters is the word), venerated for its own sake (high church preciousness), or overdone and distractingly gaudy. But Forest reminds us that the beauty of icons is intended to aid in the transfiguration of those who pray before them. Icons are images of the wholeness of God, and they convey and impart some of that wholeness to us through their beauty. It takes a great deal of artistry to manifest that kind of beauty. The second point worth noting is Forest's observation that the writing/painting of an icon is in itself an act of worship and service, entered into reverently and prayerfully. There are traditions that dictate how the wood is prepared, how the colors are selected, what they represent, and so on. The care and love with which icons are made is a good reminder that all work with God's creation is, or ought to be, mindful and reverential. The fruits of all our mental and physical labor are, in one manner of speaking, iconic. The third especially noteworthy aspect of Forest's treatment is his tie-in of prayer with icons. It might seem that the connection between the two is obvious, but I'm not sure this is the cas, at least not in the contemporary U.S.. I've been in many homes where icons are displayed as curiosities, by totally secular hosts, on the walls right next to African masks and Peruvian weavings. Forest's reflections on prayer--that it involves the whole person, not just the intellect, that it requires the cultivation of stillness and silence, that a good prayer life is one that requires a great deal of deliberate discipline, and that the goal of our prayer life is theosis--are wonderful. In addition, as earlier reviewers have pointed out, the last 150 pages of the book discuss specific icons--Christ, Mary, the saints, the Transfiguration, etc--pointing out their language, their significance, and their histories. Readers of Forest's book will be well prepared to begin praying with icons, and to move on to other reflections on icons such as John of Damascus' _On the Divine Images_ or Leonid Ouspensky & Vladimir Lossky's _The Meaning of Icons_.Finally, the illustrations, in color as well as black-and-white, are fabulous. A book to read and re-read.

Beautifully written book that is both easy to read and profoundly aware of the theology and mystery behind icons within the Orthodox liturgical and theological traditions. No detail in an icon goes unnoticed in this book, and I originally purchased it as part of an inquiry class. I would absolutely recommend this book to any inquirer into Eastern Orthodoxy or Eastern Catholicism, or any Orthodox/Byzantine Catholic looking to learn more about their own traditions.

If one desires pure Orthodox teaching, avoid the mixed opinions of this author. Instead, cling to the humble teaching of the Church Fathers: maturity in praying will follow.https://www.amazon.com/001-Philokalia-Complete-Nikodimos-Markarios/dp/0571130135

It's well written and overall a good read and reference book. Have already recommended it to my friends. I liked the book so much I now have the ebook and hard copy.

I had always looked at Icons and labeled them 'primitive christian art'. But after reading Jim Forest's book 'Praying with Icons', I have fallen in love with iconography. The Icon artist does not paint without intention; each item in an icon has theological significance. For me, reading this book, has been a journey, an opportunity to reflect and deepen my faith. The excerpts from the Orthodox writings and liturgy are profoundly moving. It also is a lesson to view ALL religious art in a deeper way. What was the artist trying to communicate? How did he feel about his subject matter? Why did he choose the colors, are they significant to his vision? What compositional elements did the artist use to communicate his message? These are some of the questions one can ask when they view ANY religious art.Lastly, an icon or a painting, can bring one to prayer; where one can clear away the clutter of modern life to reach that inner place within where one encounters truth, and communicates with the God who loves us.

Absolutely wonderful intro to living with and praying with icons. Very easy and enjoyable to read. Great history and info about icons, both as religious items and pieces of art. Inspirational and spiritual. I'm Episcopalian, and I now have a icon corner that includes the Mt. Sinai Pantocrator and the Theotokos of Vladimir, among others. Beautiful!!

As a Roman Catholic deacon who has recently begun writing icons, I am very impressed with this beautiful book by Jim Forest. I found Part I - In the Image of God especially helpful in his description of the qualities of an icon, color in iconography and the rules of an icon painter. I recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about iconography.

I enjoy reading this on my kindle and the fact that it can read to me! I've recently had surgery and cannot wear my glasses yet wanted to know the contents of the book. I appreciate the approach of the author in composition and use of language. It is simply well done and comprehensive.

Haven’t read it yet. It just lays on the shelf so people think I’m very sophisticated person. Hopefully I’ll read it one day.

What can be said about it? It's the translated work of Sigmund Freud. As a Behavior Analyst by trade, I am fascinated by the formative thinkers, Freud and Jung at the moment. These texts can be a bit daunting to read. The fact that it's translated means lots of extra brain power to make sense of some of the assertions Freud makes, but it's a worthwhile read.

Amazon and Pink Panda should both be ashamed of this 99 cent "edition", though in fairness, I suppose you get what you pay for, and I more or less assume the text is complete. But no pagination, the many footnotes are not linked, and the so-called Table of Contents reduced me to helpless giggling:Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 5A Chapter 5B Chapter 5C Chapter 5D Chapter 6 Chapter 6A Chapter 6B Chapter 6C Chapter 6D Chapter 6E Chapter 6F Chapter 6G Chapter 6H Chapter 6I Chapter 7 Chapter 7A Chapter 7B Chapter 7C Chapter 7D Chapter 7E Chapter 7FNo, those are not links, it looks exactly like that, and is every bit as silly as it looks here. This public-domain hackwork should be free, not even 99 cents; in 5 minutes a competent secretary could have added the chapter links, and probably in another half hour do the footnotes. I don't think anybody spent even 15 minutes "preparing" this "edition", and every sale is 100% profit. Caveat emptor.Note that there is ANOTHER Kindle edition that appears to be the real thing, but for some reason did not appear in my original search, leading me to purchase this infuriating book. Don't; go here instead: The Interpretation of Dreams: The Complete and Definitive Text

It's interesting to see an example of the mind of Sigmund Freud. I have heard great thing about him and been wanting to read his books. This one, in particular is a great read. It can be a great start into manifesting your own dreams.

Great reading and learning Freud's Interpretations of Dreams.

by the ever-turgid Strachey, who loves medical metaphors and Latinized phrasings more than Freud loved literary clarity; but aside from that, THE classic of psychoanalysis, and the first (and, for Freud, the favorite) of Freud's great works. One can imagine that modern dream research would have interested Freud as much as its reductionist speculations would have amused him. Certainly he'd never have argued that because a patient's stomach hurt during a painful recital of an early memory, this indigestible piece of emotional trauma was "caused" by the gastronomic rejection of a burnt piece of toast eaten just before the session. OF COURSE psychical activity has a physical substrate. And, perhaps, vice versa. What he'd have wanted to know was: in what psychological situation was all this embedded? One can't help but admire the boldness and honesty with which Freud presented his own dreams and associations. We might speculate in hindsight that Irma, the partially cured patient whom Freud tried to talk out of her hysteria, showed up in his dream with throat and stomach symptoms and an illness caused by a bad injection to protest the way he injected women with his sex-etiology theories, thereby in effect silencing their true voice; and smile at Freud's dream of an orator named Lecher, a dream he had shortly after accepting a position in which he did a lot of public speaking about psychology. But that we can speculate thus we owe largely to the techniques inspired by Freud himself. He was often wrong, but the spirit of his endeavor lives on.

Interesting read but fairly antiquated. Important for understanding modernest American writing.

complex but worth it. you will understand dreams now

The book contains some interesting pictures of various weapons and in that regard is valuable. It is rather eclectic collection, consistent with a volume that documents what is really a privately amassed collection -- and containing some examples of seldom-seen antique weapons, such as match-lock and wheel-lock muzzleloaders. Some of the comments in the book are mystifying, for instance the reference to the 1911 Colt as a "double action" pistol, when it is, in fact, the premier exanple of a single action pistol.

I have to see this collection in person. From what I understand the items in the book are just a fraction of the collection. This is a great book for anyone interested in weaponry. Very pleased with this purchase.

A well written account about one of the great weapons collections in the world.

Love it. Lots to look at. Very informative.

This is by no means a comprehensive guide - page 18 of this 240 page book discusses the first human weapons while page 30 is already at the end of the Middle Ages. It is really just a visual guide to firearms and especially ceremonial and concealable bladed weapons; there is very little `meat' in this book; it is a light read made for the eyes, not the brain. It is full of interesting specimens, however, and does cover firearms thoroughly, and thus I am inclined to give it 4 stars instead of 3 - just don't buy it if you are only into ancient warfare, or if you want an encyclopedic guide.

The pictures are nice but a lot of the captions are inaccurate. The one that sticks out in my mind at the moment is the Colt 1851 navy revolver. The caption states that the 1851 navy was a .44 caliber revolver and that a pocket version (pictured) was offered in .36 caliber. There are a couple of problems with that statement.1. The standard 1851 was not a .44 caliber revolver, it was a .36. It wasn't offered in .44 until 20th century reproductions started being made almost a hundred years later.2. They say the pocket colt is pictured but it is in fact a standard sized colt that's pictured. There are others that i noticed and I'm sure there are even more that I didn't notice because i don't know enough about the given weapon to know the caption is wrong.Bottom line, it's a good picture book for the coffee table but don't take what's written in it as the gospel.

This beautiful, photo-packed book indeed outlines evolution of weaponry, but I am most struck by the artistry of the implements. A jewel-encrusted scimitar (1,295 diamonds; owned by Catherine the Great), beaded American Indian club, carvings on an 1880s bicycle pistol and Turkish shield -- all are works by master artisans. Ivory and pearl of pistol handles, wood grain for rifles, and precious metal inlays create a sense that these are objects of beauty rather than ruin. A glossary explains nuances, like the luk of a kris or pommel of a hilt. To think that it was the personal collection of a man and wife -- now in an Alabama museum -- shows both generosity and appreciation of its historical and aesthetic value. This volume captures it all.

From the Back Cover

"Didn't he write the Ninety-Five Theses?"Though most Protestants--approximately 900 million believers worldwide--trace their spiritual roots back to the Reformation, many people today have only a vague knowledge of Martin Luther's extensive writings. Jack Kilcrease and Erwin Lutzer step into this vacuum with Martin Luther in His Own Words, a carefully selected collection of Luther's works.Organized around the five solas of the Reformation (sola Scriptura, sola fide, sola gratia, sola Christus, soli Deo gloria), the selections offer readers an accessible primer on works that are foundational to the theology of Protestantism in all its forms. An introduction to each writing includes an explanation of its historical context and theological significance. Students of the Bible, pastors, teachers, and seminary students will find this collection an enlightening introduction to Luther in his own words and a useful addition to their libraries.Jack D. Kilcrease (PhD, Marquette University) is professor of historical and systematic theology at the Institute of Lutheran Theology and a church elder at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids. He is the author of The Self-Donation of God: A Contemporary Lutheran Approach to Christ and His Benefits, and his writings have appeared in Journal of Ecclesiastical History, Lutheran Quarterly, Logia, and Concordia Theological Quarterly, among others. Great read.

Martin Luther was undoubtedly one of the most influential theologians in history. An exceptional communicator who was also committed to upholding God's word, he sought to expose the church's abuses. In combination with a restless people and the advent of the printing press, Luther's challenges started a fire that took the world by storm. When Protestantism traces its roots, Luther is undoubtedly a progenitor. In other words, it is not just Lutheranism that traces its roots to Luther, but Protestantism in general.Despite his profound influence upon Western History generally and church history in particular, I suspect few casual readers have read him, which is unfortunate. Luther was a keen thinker and worth the effort to read. When I tell people that one of my must read books is Luther's Commentary on the Galatians, I am met with glazed eyes that ask, "why would anyone read a commentary for pleasure?"Perhaps the greatest service that Kilcrease and Lutzer offer to the church in their new book Martin Luther in His Own Words (Baker, 2017) is a sampling of Luther. Those who are new to wine often benefit from attending a sampling; in the same way, those new to Luther also benefit from a sampling. The authors give us 12 chapters under the heading of the five solas--sola fide, sola gratia, sola scriptura, solus christus, and soli deo gloria. For those unfamiliar with these Latin reformation terms, they mean this: faith alone, grace alone, scripture alone, Christ alone, and to the glory of God alone. Under each heading, Kilcrease offers the reader 2 or 3 chapters pulled directly from Luther and offers them a helpful introduction. Sections from a number of Luther's works were included including: his commentary on Galatians, the larger catechism, and Bondage of the Will to name a few.In an ideal world, this book will serve as an aperitif for more Luther. If this book stimulates the appetites of even 5% of its readers for his Galatians commentary, it will be an amazing success. Even if it doesn't, however, readers will come to know a man of profound biblical wisdom and insight.I received a review copy of this book from the Baker Books Blogger program in exchange for a review. I was not required to provide a positive review and the impressions given here are my own.

Five hundred years ago, the writing and teaching of Martin Luther set in motion within the church a series of reforms that were so widespread and foundational that we still speak of them as The Reformation. In this anniversary year, much is being written about the lives of the reformers, but direct access to Luther’s commentaries, sermons, and lectures is an irreplaceable part of understanding the truth that triggered such sweeping changes in the way we understand justification by faith, freedom of religion, the nature of salvation, and the wonder of God’s grace. Based on updated translations by Dr. Jack D. Kilcrease, he and Erwin Lutzer have compiled and edited Martin Luther in His Own Words so that the essential writings of the reformation are available as a resource for study and for inspiration. The text is arranged around the five solas of the reformation with supporting excerpts from books, catechisms, commentaries, sermons, and lectures that flowed from Luther’s pen:Sola Fide: Faith Alone“A Christian is free lord of all and subject to none;a Christian is the most dutiful servant of all and subject to everyone.”From On Christian LibertyAlthough Luther did not hold to mind/body dualism, he often used language of “spirit” and “flesh,” and this quote differentiates between the believer’s standing before God and her relationship with others on this planet. Both statements are rooted in the writing of Paul who “made [himself] a servant to all” while at the same time urged believers to “owe no one anything except to love each other.”Luther’s Commentary on Galatians further explicates this relationship between faith and works with the stunning conclusion that, while the works of the law do not assist us in salvation, it is only people of faith who are truly “doers of the law.”Sola Gratia: Grace Alone“To fulfill the law means to do its work eagerly, lovingly, and freely, without the constraint of the law; it means to live well and in a manner pleasing to God, as though there were no law or punishment.”From Preface to St. Paul’s Letter to the RomansLuther’s translation of the Bible eventually became the standard translation within the German-speaking world (equivalent to our English KJV). In his introductions to each book, his teaching lived on long after his death, influencing both Tyndale and Wesley in their spiritual development. In his teaching and his writing, Luther affirmed the role of the law as teacher, but declared its insufficiency to bring about righteousness since it is impossible for humans to consistently obey the law. The role of the gospel is to pave the way for new life, a work of grace in which Christ’s righteousness is imputed to the believing heart.Sola Scriptura: Scripture Alone“The clarity of Scripture is twofold, just as the obscurity is also twofold. The one is external, placed in the ministry of the Word; the other internal, placed in the understanding of the heart. If you speak of the internal clearness, no man sees one iota in the Scripture but he that has the Spirit of God. . . If you speak of he external clearness, nothing at all is left obscure or ambiguous. But all things that are in the Scriptures are by the Word brought forth into the clearest light and proclaimed to the whole world.”From The Bondage of the WillLuther held a high view of Scripture, affirming that, indeed, the believer can understand what it teaches on a particular subject with careful teaching, and that knowledge of Christ’s saving death on the cross, the central teaching of Scripture, is through the Word and by grace.Solus Christus: Christ Alone“The sins of the whole world, past, present, and future, fastened themselves on Christ and condemned him. But because Christ is God, he had an everlasting and unconquerable righteousness.”From Commentary on Galatians: Christ Took Our SinDeath of the sinless Christ earned justification for those who believe. Luther’s Christology differed from medieval theologians who were unwilling to accept Paul’s teaching that Christ’s work on our behalf was a sin-bearing work rather than merely a “superior moral behavior.” He argued that if we do not believe our sins have been laid on Christ, “then it is up to us to bear them.”Soli Deo Gloria: Glory to God AloneBut let this be said . . . that we are to trust in God alone and look to him and expect from him nothing but good, as from one who gives us body, life, food, drink, nourishment, health, protection, peace, and all necessaries of both temporal and eternal things . . . as an eternal fountain that gushes forth abundantly nothing but what is good and from which flows forth all that is and is called ‘good.'”From The Large CatechismWhen Luther and his colleagues discovered through visitations to country parishes that the state of Christian belief and practice were far from orthodox, he began writing summaries of basic Christian beliefs — not to replace the Bible, but to facilitate study of the Bible and worship with understanding of who God is and all that He has done.Kilcrease and Lutzer provide just the right amount of editorial input and background material, and then allow the words of Luther to stand on their own. Looking through the cultural lens of 2017, Luther’s quest for salvation and earnest pursuit of truth stands out in startling relief against our backdrop of spiritual malaise and cultural assimilation. Thanks be to God that the realities trumpeted by Luther and his colleagues assure us that it is possible even today to embrace a livelier faith and that those who believingly follow Jesus Christ are privileged and compelled to be among those who are always growing, always striving for clarity of belief and faithfulness in practice. Because of the work of Christ and the revealed truth of God’s Word, by grace and through faith, we are always reforming — to the glory of God.//This book was provided by Baker Books, a division of Baker Publishing Group, in exchange for my review.
