Joseph Silk's "Horizons in Cosmology" isn't just a great non-mathematical introduction to cosmology and galactic astronomy: it's a fascinating portrait of how science develops by what our theories *don't* explain. It represents a brilliant snapshot of Astronomy at the beginning of the 21st century. In this respect, Horizons is quite different from Silk's textbook "The Big Bang".This book contains the clearest explanation of galaxies I've ever seen: Silk's work in galaxy formation gives him an insider's view of what we know (quite a bit), what we don't (a whole lot more), and what we really *need* to know. At this point, the "big picture" of Cosmology is pretty well established: the Universe began in a big bang about 14 billion years ago, then slowly developed into a web of galaxies influenced by dark matter and energy. However, the details of how galaxies formed and how they develop through time is much less clear. Supercomputers are not yet much help: the physical processes at work in the growth of galaxies so complex we can't yet build realistic simulations. More critically, scientists haven't yet figured out how the many processes of feedback and environmental interactions fit together (you can't simulate what you don't understand.)Again and again, Silk's explanations show the bleeding edge of theory: each successful model somehow raises as many questions as it answers. Though the book is non-mathematical, Silk's exposition is rigorous and detailed - this is not in any sense an easy-reading book. However, persistence brings real rewards. For the last several years, I've been involved in the Galaxy Zoo project [...], where volunteers classify images of galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Hubble space telescope. This book is a MUST for zooites: I know of no clearer explanation of how galaxies work. Great job, Joe!

In Chocolate We Trust: The Hershey Company Town Unwrapped (Contemporary Ethnography), by Peter Kurie

Review

"Peter Kurie offers a richly detailed look at just how profoundly private wealth can shape public life in a single American city. In Chocolate We Trust tells a fascinating—and cautionary—tale about the power of philanthropy in modern times."—David Callahan, Founder & Editor, Inside Philanthropy"Peter Kurie has written the definitive book on Hershey's legacy, an in-depth analysis of how Hershey's Trust has dominated and transformed Hershey, Pennsylvania over a hundred-year period. It is not just a thorough history covering the origins of the trust through to today's modern scandals, but also a deep look into how trusts and empires can be built which last long after the founder's death. It's a lesson for us all."—Steven Davidoff Solomon, UC Berkeley School of Law"No better or more poignant account has ever been written of how the legal instrument of the trust, meant to conserve private wealth, has so thoroughly constituted cultures of community in the United States—well into its postindustrial era, amid its rust belt zones."—George E. Marcus, coauthor of Lives in Trust"A native son of Hershey, Pennsylvania, Peter Kurie has conducted an ethnography of this company town named after the chocolate magnate who founded it. His vivid and scrupulous chronicle of a charity torn by financial scandals proposes a fascinating descent into an obsolete epitome of paternalistic local capitalism which still survives in a time of aggressive global philanthropy."—Didier Fassin, Institute for Advanced Study

Great read! As someone from Hershey, I found the depiction of the town to be spot on! Kurie does a great job describing and dissecting the relationship between old "Hersheyites" who grew up in the 1950s and 60s and the "Newbies" in town as well as the complex and often contentious relationship between the townspeople and the trust. Highly recommend for anyone interested in learning more about this historic place!

"Can business take care of people? Can it build and sustain communities? Can it save lives?" The ramifications of these questions, asked by Kurie in the introduction, take the importance of this book well beyond the boundaries of the town itself. You need not have grown up in ol' Chocolatetown, nor even have visited, to learn valuable lessons from this example (and from Kurie's great work in investigating it). Though, as someone who did in fact grow up there, I enjoyed one interviewee's assessment of Hershey as being "a very expensive fantasy," and I applaud Kurie's inclusion of the union history (e.g. the '37 workers' strike) and current struggles in international labor rights in the town's often sugar-coated story.

Well done, Mr. Kurie! It was fascinating to learn so much about the history of the town named for the man behind the Hershey bar, the Milton Hershey School Trust and its multi-billion dollar endowment, and the ongoing controversies regarding the management of this charitable trust. The author tells of the uniqueness of Hershey, Pennsylvania from its inception to today, and one gets the sense that change is not welcomed by many of its residents. IN CHOCOLATE WE TRUST gives the reader much food for thought.

I adored IN CHOCOLATE WE TRUST. It is an inspiring story beautifully and brilliantly told. The author has combined the mesmerizing human story coupled with Milton Hershey’s business acumen and vision. The resultant trust turned thousands of disadvantaged children into productive citizens for more than a century, delighted billions of chocolate lovers around the globe and benefited thousands of patients of the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State Children's Hospital in Hershey. For me IN CHOCOLATE WE TRUST was a personal journey. In the 1960s my wife and I got involved in the (then) little-known sport of curling in Darien, Connecticut, where we participated in competitions (called bonspiels) with curling clubs around the East. One of the most active was the Hershey Curling Club (since disbanded) where we went on several occasions. During one week, I met a pilot for Allegheny Airlines(forerunner of US Airways) who had bought a house in Hershey and regaled me with stories of life in Hershey. For example, on his first morning he arose at 4:00 a.m. went down to the kitchen to make coffee and read the paper. It was his regular routine that cleared his head before driving the 12 miles to Harrisburg to catch his first flight of the day.Staring out at the darkness that first morning he noticed an automobile heading past his driveway. The car stopped, the headlights were turned off and the driver sat in the darkness for a few minutes, then turned on the headlights and slowly moved on. Same thing the next day. And the next. And the next. The following week his phone rang. It was the Hershey police who said he probably noticed the car at the end of his driveway in the mornings. As a new resident, the police wanted to get a sense of his daily routine, so if anything changed they would be alerted. Another story the pilot told was the town’s tree trimming service. Hershey workers would come by in the fall, trim all the dead branches and stack them in the woodpile. No charge—one of the benefits of living in Hershey. When I recounted this story to friends, some felt creeped out. Others, including me, loved the idea.We also got to know members of the Hershey Curling Club—among them Joe and Muriel Eby. Joe was a lovely guy who founded a local real estate company. Low key and self-effacing, Joe never talked about his 37 missions as a bomber pilot over Germany in WWII and his 6 oak leaf clusters. One day at breakfast he mentioned he had been a student at the Milton Hershey School in the 1930s and asked if we would be interested in seeing the school. We jumped at the chance. Joe gave us a private tour of the buildings, the kitchens. dining room and the classrooms, highlighted with tales of life at school and vivid memories of Milton Hershey (who died in 1945). I treasured the experience.IN CHOCOLATE WE TRUST is the story of this uniquely American business model—a school with a $12 billion endowment that owns a company with a $21 billion Market Cap. Here is the genesis of the town, the residents over the years, the fights to maintain the trust intact and the inner workings and philosophy of the school. Plus the author makes the intricacies of the complex trust absolutely clear (and fascinating) to a non-lawyer like myself. Many great charitable trusts have been created in America over the years—the Shriners and St. Jude’s children’s hospitals, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundations to name but three, but Hershey—town, gown and company are one of kind. It can never be replicated. A great reading experience!

Kurie’s wonderful new book is about the town of Hershey, Pennsylvania, its mythic, chocolate-making founder, and the local charitable school he endowed—and so much more! Casting an anthropologist’s eye on the interrelations between the town, the company, and the charitable trust, and focusing on telling incidents and compelling narratives of change, Kurie shows us how money and law together shape the elementary conditions of everyday life in our “Second Gilded Age.” This book is remarkably vast in its reach, touching on charity, business, education, high finance, work, and the lives of laborers, finding all of these at play in the ordinary incidents of an rural-suburban town—admittedly one with an exceptional role in the history of American capitalism and philanthropy. Throughout his “tour . . . of the Hershey ecosystem,” Kurie clearly and crisply stages the core issues at the heart of his research: the morality of commerce and the commerce in morality that large charitable trusts and foundations perpetuate. Not only does this book deserve attention from scholars of charity, philanthropy, and the anthropology of law, “In Chocolate We Trust” also makes a valuable contribution to US ethnography at large by drawing our attention to the long-standing institutional and legal conditions for community, especially as these come under new strain.

Every now and then at intervals too far apart comes a book that takes on a life of its own, a book that is passed down through the generations, one that becomes more valuable as the years pass by until one day you find the book in a museum or historical archives and it opens up the past like a magical portal. Do you Know your Mom's Story? by Glenna Mageau is that book. It contains 365 questions to ask your mother and in the process of gaining her answers, the book comes alive with her personality, her aspirations from her youth to her elder years, her plans, hopes, fears and experiences. And as her life unfolds, so does a snapshot in time of a place and an era that formed her world. It takes the reader - and the mother's children - on a journey into the past that is as unique as she is. It is particularly valuable for those interested in preserving ancestry and genealogy records, because it reaches far beyond dates of birth, marriage and death and into the heart and soul of a woman and her family. As one who has written several books on my ancestors, I only wish this book had been available to them in centuries past; it would have been a goldmine, an invaluable resource that not only tells the tales of a woman but gives us a glimpse into ourselves and what made us who we are.

This is very interesting!! At least half of these questions I wish I had asked my grandmother before she passed away!! If ur curious about ur mother's or grandmother's past!! They're childhood, where & how they grew up!! These questions get right down to it, without being rude or pushy!! If ur family has an interesting 'story' from the past, before ur time & you want more info...This book could help!! My grandmother was divorced from an abusive drunk & then married the love of her life!! He adopted her children & then changed their last name legally again later!! She was 100% American Indian & he was born in Italy & came over to the U.S. as a young man!! That's ALL I know...It would be great to have more info!! Like how her Ex-husband introduced her to her next husband, the love of her life!! Would really love to know those details!! Buy this book, ask ur mother & ur grandmother every question in it!! U'll learn alot of really interesting stuff!!

Not what I hoped it would be. It’s definitely not a list of questions, it’s more narrative chapters with some questions at the end of each chapter. Really odd format.

I like the book very much, it helps me a lot in giving me ideas to ask my mother questions and to know her more. Recommended.

This book, Do You Know Your Mom's Story? 365 Questions You Need to Ask Her by Glenna Mageau is something that I wish I had had when my Mom was still alive. What a treasure trove of information you would have about your Mom, her childhood, her family dynamics, what and who shaped her personality, her heart, her goals for her life. It would be a great way to connect with your Mom in times of quiet reflection over a cup of something warm and cozy. Make it a date......once a week or month. Set aside the time to re-bond with her or maybe for the first time. Full of questions that make it easy for you to know what to ask, this book can be the difference between knowing who your Mom really is or just who you think she is. Glenna writes in an easy fashion that draws you into the story so it doesn't seem like a "how to" book. She shares about her relationship with her Mom. At the end, there is a section to record your special memories of Mom........something else to share with her and your own daughter(s), if you have one.I was given an Advanced Readers Copy for my honest opinion.

I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.Do You Know Your Mom's Story?: 365 Questions You Need to Ask Her by Glenna Mageau is not what I expected. I thought it would be just pages and pages of lists of questions. It is much more than that. It encourages you to have a conversation with your mother. It allows you to learn about your mother as a person and not just as a title, "Mom".While being a mom is a huge part of me, it is not all of me. Why do we assume that is all our mothers are?The book is broken down into categories based on subjects and different points of their lives. It includes easy to talk about memories and the incredibly difficult ones. Asking these questions honestly helped change my relationship with my mother to morph from mother and daughter to person and person. It allowed us to talk as adults, as equals, and understand each other better. Memories were shared but from two completely different points of view.I would have liked to have found something similar before my father passed away. It would have been nice to preserve his memories and thoughts of being more than just a dad.

This made me think about how well I didn't know my mom. I plan on asking a lot of questions and I also plan on leaving answers to those questions for my daughter. Glenna wrote a fabulous book about mother's and how they don't tell us all of their past, what might have hurt, marred their lives, broken hearts, and more. I think mothers tend to tell us the good and skip over the bad or sad parts.

Amazing questions BUT there is NO room under each question to write. There are blank pages but then you have to rewrite the question to keep track of answers. Not a good flow.

From the Back Cover

The #1 New York Times bestselling memoir of U.S. Navy Seal Chris Kyle, and the source for Clint Eastwood’s blockbuster movie which was nominated for six academy awards, including best picture. From 1999 to 2009, U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle recorded the most career sniper kills in United States military history. His fellow American warriors, whom he protected with deadly precision from rooftops and stealth positions during the Iraq War, called him “The Legend”; meanwhile, the enemy feared him so much they named him al-Shaitan (“the devil”) and placed a bounty on his head. Kyle, who was tragically killed in 2013, writes honestly about the pain of war—including the deaths of two close SEAL teammates—and in moving first-person passages throughout, his wife, Taya, speaks openly about the strains of war on their family, as well as on Chris. Gripping and unforgettable, Kyle’s masterful account of his extraordinary battlefield experiences ranks as one of the great war memoirs of all time.

Excellent perspective from one who served. Seldom do I condemn other reviewers in their stance, but this is the rare exception. To all those who thought or think this is American propaganda, then you either did not read the book, or your mind was made up before you started or you have not read any other memoirs from any other conflicts in the world. This is the insight of a man who was on the ground and answered the call of his country and performed to exemplary levels of honor, bravery and comradeship. You will find the same type of writing in “Last Dead Hero”- Robert Lamon, “Blood Red Snow”- Gunther K. Koschorrek, “The Forgotten Soldier” Guy Sajer “Patton” Ladislas Farago and a host of others. These men fought for their country and sought to defeat and destroy the enemy. Plain and simple, waris about killing people to win. It’s not a walk in the park and handled through diplomacy where everyone holds hands and smiles. War is ugly, destructive and dehumanizing. Ask the Russians how many they lost during World War Two. Ask the British if they had, as Neville Chamberlain proclaimed, “Peace in our time.” You win by killing your enemy!Chris gives the reader a frontline look at how the battle in Iraq was fought. Does he come across as inhumane? Perhaps. But as a sniper, his job isn’t to sit back and observe, it’s to protect his fellow soldiers in harms way. And he does this by killing the enemy.I have talked, not interviewed, many men who served in WWII, Korea, Vietnam and Iraq/Afghanistan. The common thread all of these men and women hold is, they are fighting for the man/woman by their side. Politics and grand strategies are the farthest thing from their minds. Protecting their fellow soldiers is front and foremost. His insight to his commanders is a common theme you’ll find in most biographies-incompetent. His description of one of these, “0% casualties, 100% effectiveness.” galled him. How do you go out in the field to ambush or become a target for your foe and not expect to incur casualties? I’m sure those were the words Eisenhower, Bradley, Montgomery, Patton, Truscott, Roosevelt, King, Schwarzkopf and Franks told their men as they were going into the fray. No!The other side of this tribute is his family life. Was it all rose gardens and happy-go-lucky? Far from it. His wife Taya had her own battles to fight. She was responsible for raising their two children while he was off fighting. Her insights to their fiery, troubled relationship are well timed and placed through this work. She does not hold back how much she despises the military but also understands that her husband is bound and determined to keep the bad guys from coming to the states and making sure he does everything in his ability to make that happen. For her, it is a Catch-22. She loves her husband and is proud of his service, but sooner or later, he’s going to have to make family number two on the list. When Chris realizes that he’s not immortal during his last deployment and reenlistment is coming up, he will have to decide if he wants to continue his service which could result in him losing his family. He chooses the later. This alone is an excellent testament of two people not taking the easy road. They overcame their differences and remembered why they fell in love in the first place.I recommend this warrior’s story to anyone who wants a glimpse into the day to day life of a man who is dedicated to his God, Country and Family.

Really great book – I have a couple points, but first I served in Iraq in 08-09 as a gunner as a member of a combat MP team; being said, I have the utmost respect for snipers because of their overwatch capabilities. I mean, they all deserve a high five for keeping us ground pounders save over there. As for the book, I like it because Kyle writes in spoken word, not a verbage packed authoring kinda thing. He writes and talks like a SEAL. It’s well written, I enjoyed the tidbits form Taya – reminds me of when I describe my deployment and then my wife cuts in too. Very genuine book. As a soldier, I gotta pick on other branches as a requirement. Kyle calls SEALs silent professionals, I understand what he’s saying, but he can get kinda obnoxious and narsasstic sometimes, im not giggin’ the guy though, he’s a friggin’ SEAL, a horse of another color and im sure if I went through BUD/S and came out the other end, I’d be a cocky bad-a%% too! Anyway, God bless Kyle and his family, rest in peace brother, you earned eternity of it in heaven – thanks for you and all your brethren who watched our six, even when we didn’t know you guys were there.

I had intended to read this book and see the film but was immediately moved to do so after listening to an interview with the screenwriter on The Rich Roll podcast. The intro to the book states that it was submitted for review to the military prior to publication in accordance with their standards and that there was quite a bit that they didn't like. What that tells you is that this is a pretty raw account of serving as a dedicated Navy SEAL sniper. It is not an overly romanticized tale of a hero or a legend as Chris Kyle has come to be known. He definitely expresses his 100% dedication to his SEAL profession and in that regard is probably a Navy recruiters dream poster boy but he also shares the toll that a decade of commitment took on him physically, emotionally and in regards to his family. He really seems to have put it all out on the table. A great addition to the book are brief submissions from his wife on how this life was affecting their relationship and children. Without her contribution it would have been easy to view this story with a neat and clean arc of enthusiasm and excitement to action to a slightly rough but ultimately successful re-entry to civilian life. Instead we get a real sense of the fact that coming home entails much more than merely adjusting to indoor plumbing and quiet nights. This is a very complete view into the challenges this type of commitment ultimately entails for the individuals as well as their families. It is heart breaking to discover what ultimately claimed him after all that he and his family went thru. We can only hope that his story serves to shine a bright light on the issues surrounding combat veterans and that we are all much more conscious of the many sacrifices of the brave that serve us. I highly recommend his wife's book, American Wife, to get the full picture.RIP Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield

Book is a pretty detailed version of Kyle's experiences in Iraq, and it's a good read. Movie is more of a summary of Kyle's 4 tours in Iraq, and adds a lot of embellishments and untruths into the Kyle story (Hollywood does this for more dramatic effects). That being said, the book received a lot of criticisms about Kyle making up a lot of stories to turn himself into more of a "Legend" than he really was. Such criticisms included Kyle taking out Looters in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina; this was not discussed in this book. Neither was the criticism of the alleged Jesse Ventura episode, where Kyle supposedly punched the former governor in the face. None of this was discussed in this book or at least the version I read. Maybe the publishers took those stories out in this version due to the criticisms and the subsequent defamation lawsuit filed by Ventura. I don't know. Anyway, this book is a good read, and, in my opinion, a better depiction of Kyle than the Eastwood movie version.

The Death of Inflation: Surviving and Thriving in the Zero Era, by Roger Bootle

From Publishers Weekly

Controversial in Britain, Bootle's brisk, clearly written report predicts that we are gradually returning to a world of zero inflation, much like the era immediately after WWII before perpetual inflation set in. In this new anti-inflationary environment, he forecasts, the price of housing will be as likely to go down as up; automatic annual pay raises will disappear; retail prices will rise in some years, fall in others; and interest rates will remain in the 2%-4% range. Bootle, a business professor in Britain and chief economist of Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corp., spells out the implications of zero inflation for individuals, corporations, investors and governments, dispensing often unorthodox advice. On a global scale, he predicts that monetary authorities' fears about resurgent inflation could cause them to set interest rates too high, thereby triggering a slump. Though Bootle overstates his case, his book provides a new slant on the economic terrain. Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Few books match what is depicted in "the death of inflation" The importance of this work is even more obvious as we are now several years after the book was originally published. The historical perspective presented is quite interesting, and with the advent of the internet, labor is the true source of the "zero inflation" idea. Price competition is inherently deflationary. This long term study "of studies" will show the average reader that capital, like any other commodity, is just another "fixed asset" in the universe. There is neither more or less of it in the universe, which means that inflation, as we have come to know it, is nothing more than an illusion in the short term, and a fallacy in the long term.

The author has successfully discussed the various theoretical works done on "inflation". It had been enlightening to know that many of the great, simple theories in economics simply did not say anything useful. The balanced approach in discussing each issue had been a key feature throughout the book. I would recommend that final year economic students and MBA students should read this excellently written book.
