The murderers that she discusses as elements in Islamic State (IS), Boko Haram, Al Qaeda, Al-Shabaab, the Taliban, suicide bombers and other militant groups are psychopaths. That these killers really believe that they are following the dictates of Allah is not questioned here. The Qur’an (as spelled in the book) and the Hadith have provided them with the only rationalization they need to pour out the hatred pounded into them daily from early childhood. Hatred for anything that deviates from their religious teachings begins in the home. The author writes, “The totalitarian regimes of the twentieth century had to work quite hard to persuade family members to denounce one another to the authorities. The power of the Muslim system is that the authorities do not need to be involved. Social control begins at home.” (Page 154) Hirsi Ali states that she is not extraordinary. That is probably the only misstatement in the book. Her writings and personal appearances reveal an uncommon courage in challenging a dangerous religion that has threatened her with murder and repeatedly perpetrated atrocities that clearly demonstrate that they mean what they say. She has spoken out with admirable courage that makes Western apologists for Islam look like the wimps that they are. Unilateral tolerance is dangerous. The author points out many times that murderous intolerance lies at the very heart of Islam. It is built into the very fabric of the religion. She asserts that militant Islam cannot be stopped with U.S. drone strikes. The foundation tenets of the religion must brought into question and reformed. She lists what she calls "five theses" (pages 74 and 235): 1. the status of the Qur’an as the last and immutable word of God and the infallibility of Muhammad as the last divinely inspired messenger; 2. Islam’s emphasis on the afterlife over the here-and-now; 3. the claims of sharia to be a comprehensive system of law governing both the spiritual and temporal realms; 4. the obligation on ordinary Muslims to command right and forbid wrong; 5. the concept of jihad, or holy war. Hirsi Ali divides Muslims into three groups that she calls Mecca Muslims (peaceful and law-abiding), Medina (militant) Muslims, and dissidents. She condemns the Medina group as the perpetrators of the ongoing atrocities that she describes in horrifying detail. She then expresses hope that the last group can stir people to bring about the changes desperately needed to bring Islam into the twenty-first century. The author’s optimism that Islam can be reformed, although an admirable and most welcome outcome, is also most unlikely. Sharia (religious law approved by a majority of Muslims - page 139), seeks to rule the world and drag mankind back to the seventh century. Islam, as she has portrayed it, finds a parallel in current Christian fundamentalism and Christian sadistic intolerance of centuries past. Virulent intolerance, stemming from whatever religious or political set of beliefs, is a psychologically defensive posture motivated by fear that questioning the smallest tenet of the faith throws open the entire doctrine to debate and threatens to collapse the whole belief structure. I question that backward, fatalistic, authoritarian and violent Islam could survive that exposure. It would cease to be Islam, the very word a cognate of submission.Michael Atkins, PhD

As a college professor, I taught school law. For anyone who is not an attorney, do not make legal decisions, instead make administrative decisions that's based upon school policy, your union agreement, and books like this legal text. This book is well documented and up to date. It is broad in its scope, yet its specific enough to inform you about contracts, "separation of church and state", and the "separate but equal" law that lasted from 1896 to 1954, the Courts decisions from Plessy v. Ferguson to Brown v. BOE of Topeka. The scope of this book is broad, yet deep...I recommend this book for anyone who wants to gain information about legal matters that pertains to school law.

I actually rented this book for a class. It is not inexpensive! But it is such a great resource I ended up buying it. It is written in layman language, no need to read and reread for understanding. If you are involved in education policy or in school administration I highly recommend it. Heck even if you are a parent or a teacher!

This Sixth Edition of American Public School Law is a comprehensive treatment of noteworthy public school case law that also serves to outline the history of our country. It's user friendly, while not lowering the bar for comprehension. About the Author

George R.R. Martin sold his first story in 1971 and has been writing professionally since then. He spent ten years in Hollywood as a writer-producer, working on The Twilight Zone, Beauty and the Beast, and various feature films and television pilots that were never made. In the mid ’90s he returned to prose, his first love, and began work on his epic fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire. He has been in the Seven Kingdoms ever since. Very solid fantasy story that expands the Game of Thrones universe.For those of you that are fans (who isn't) of the show, the siblings of Aemon Targaryen (the maester in the Night's Watch) loom large in this book. It takes place about 80 years before GOT begins. Rooting for the hero and his sidekick is instinctive.The art is nicely done and helps tell the tale.

I was curious about this, but hey, it was Martin, a prequel to GOT, so why not?And it's good.You enter the world of the Hedge Knight, a sword for hire, the Ronin of Westeros. They sometimes thrive, sometimes starve, and are a minor part of the universe. We go into that portion, and see how they live, and die, as,we follow a young man trying to make it in the world. I truly enjoyed the realistic reenactment s of jousting and chivalry, you have a better idea of what it was like, the hopes, the life, the obstacles they faced. This is a much simpler plot than GOT, but 'tis the telling of the tale that shines.Btw a good value too, much longer than most graphic novels.

Wow, such high quality for such a low price! I was pleasantly surprised to find out these were a lot thicker than I expected! I was expecting some sort of flimsy comic book type thing for such a low price...I was expecting to receive just "so-so" quality. I was fortunately wrong! I ordered both the Hedge Knigh I & II and found that they were both excellently made, with a very sturdy spine to the book and beautiful illustrations. These are going to be a gift for my boyfriend, as we're both huge GOT fans. I know he will love to add these to his collection. They are very well made and both shipped to me very quickly. Once again, I am pleased with my amazon.com purchases!

This is very pretty and just because pretty drawings are such a luxury in this digital day and age, I would say that at under $10, it is worth getting just to continue to expose non readers to an illustrated story. But there really isn't much story to it - I understand that it is a short story adaptation. I bought it for someone who is not interested in Game of Thrones yet. I find the possibly Olde English spelling to be off putting and difficult for someone not comfortable with the English language to grasp.

I'm not a regular reader of graphic novels. But I do love me some George R.R. Martin and his world in A Song of Ice and Fire.This graphic novel aggregates 6 stand alone comics and makes for a beautifully rendered story that predates the activities that start with Martin's A Game of Thrones. The graphic novel is based upon Martin's own short story, and the narration and dialogue read very true to the nature of Martin's work and will be immediately recognizable for any fan of ASOIAF.The art is very 'mature', bright, bold, detailed, descriptive and not cartoonish. Combined with the vivid coloring, the entire Hedge Knight 'package' does a terrific job evoking Martin's world.I highly recommend this to any existing fan of AWOIAF or anyone who's interested in dipping their toe in a Game of Thrones without committing to a 1,000 page read. And if you're not into 'fantasy', there's no worries here. While there are references to dragons, the action is all medieval.

Everything about these graphic novels is entertaining: The storylines are reminiscent of The Game of Throne novels, as these stories are prequels to those and are set in the lands of the seven kingdoms. The Art work is excellent and beautifully detailed. The characters take on an appealing realness, with genuine interactions, faults, emotions and strengths, which I would not expect from a graphic novel but then this was written by George R.R. Martin after all. I did find the second novel: The Sworn Sword Hedge Knight II to be somewhat more appealing then The Hedge Knight, but both are highly recommended.

Although I don't have the novels, this was a fantastic story and well worth the money! These could make for an interesting spin-off TV series if HBO & GRRM ever decided to. Inside, the art and colors are well done, with characters drawn looking more realistic. There is plenty of speaking and background given, so don't dismiss this as being a "picture book." I already want to re-read both Hedge Knight graphic novels to pick up more details I may have missed. There's a lot going on, and a lot of characters.To all the reviewers who purchased this thinking it was the novel... and giving this bad ratings... how could you not see the words "graphic novel" in the product description?

Never did I think this would be out in kindle for under $10. I have watched for used copies but they are more than a new Martin 1000 page novel. The artwork is great but it would be for naught without George Martin's story. This is like seeing a movie (which probably will follow or a miniseries) long before the rest of the audience does. The world is full of Targyrians then. Now they are down to one. Cannot recommend it stronger. Miss it and you miss part 1 of a 2 part (so far) adventure. Remember this eats up memory. When I first saw this listed I thought Martin had done the same thing Jordan had done with "New Spring", in other words I thought he had taken the awesome short story from "Legends" and expanded it into a longer novel forcing me to spend extra money even though I had already shelled out for "Legends".Thanks to reading a couple of the reviews I learned I was horribly mistaken and had kept myself from enjoying an awesome story in comic form.It is the exact same story from the short story "The Hedge Knight" but as every reader knows the change of mediums from prose to comic gives the reader a new experience. I would never say that one or the other is better, that is up to the reader, but I would definitely say it is a real treat to be able to switch between the two. The artwork is beatiful and true to story, and I didn't feel that anything was left out that had been in the short story.My only disappointment is knowing they can't do the entire series in this form also.
