Although I am biased (Richard L. Morgan is my brother), I found this book of few words a gift for those who are facing death, whether their own or loved ones. It's the kind of book you can hand someone in these situations to help them see they are not alone.

We are using this book as a study guide in our church group. The lessons are short but we are having good discussions based on them and there are thoughtful conversation starters and good reflective exercises.

At the Edge of Life is a lovely book about finding and giving peace at the end of life. Highly recommend for those searching for resources to deal with the passing of a loved one.

I have had the privilege of getting to know Rev. Dr. Richard Morgan as we have worked together to convene the national network, ClergyAgainstAlzheimer's. In his latest book, Dr. Morgan draws on his 60 years of experience as a pastor, hospice chaplain, and friend to all, to offer perspective and advice to people coping with a family member, friend, or patient who is approaching death. Serving in these roles, he has learned "either to be still or to carry on a conversation with those who are dying." It is these final conversations that form the heart and soul of his book. Dr. Morgan wrote "At the Edge of Life" to help us listen, talk, and relate to each other so that those of us who remain behind are able to both give and receive the gift of this final conversation. One of the final tasks in life for all people is to fully come to the realization they will die. It is also the hardest tasks to ever complete because it is a task best done in dialogue with others. This dialogue is never easy because there is a public conspiracy of silence about death and many of us have a strong personal denial of death. This quick, easy read makes this task of talking about death not so daunting because it helps a person overcome the conspiracy of silence about death in others and the denial of it in ourselves. It does this by helping to jump-start the conversation about death. The hardest step in any unpleasant task is getting started. Most of us just don't know how to start a conversations about dying with our loved ones or ourselves. This book eases you into this first step and all steps which follow rather than jar you into them. This book's first step is to help us discover when and how to begin to talk about death with others. It next prepares us for the conversation with loved ones when they die by having us practice talking with them as they die and then gently asks us to imagine our own deaths from someone else's vantage point. Each chapter contains questions like this, and move to exercises designed to give us practice in holding these discussions about death. When we become comfortable with these questions it leads to comfort with our own answers and the answers of others. I wish I had this book when I was a parish pastor. The church's role in it's parishioners lives is to help them to live and die faithfully. Many of our church members are however terrified of death. The opposite of fear is faith, and so this book could help our church members overcome their fear of dying through being full of faith and thus be prepared to live and then die faithfully. I have been recommending this book during workshops. It is the single best book on death preparation. The season of Lent is a perfect time to do a special study about death and dying at church, when the church follows Christ to the Cross. This little book is divided into four sections which lends itself into doing it during Lent by doing a before and after discussion with the books sections sandwiched between.

About the Author

René Depestre, born in 1926, is one of the most important voices of Haitian literature. A peer of seminal figures like Aimé Césaire, Pablo Neruda, and André Breton, Depestre has engaged with the politics/aesthetics of negritude, social realism, and surrealism for more than half a century. Having lived through significant moments in Haitian and New World history--from the overthrow of Haitian dictator Élie Lescot in 1946, to the first Congress of Black Writers and Artists in Paris in 1956, to a struggle with Haiti's François "Papa Doc" Duvalier in 1957, to a collaboration with Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara and a fraught relationship with Fidel Castro in the 1960s and '70s--Depestre is uniquely positioned to reflect on the extent to which the Americas and Europe are implicated in Haiti's past and present. He is the author of Hadriana in All My Dreams.Edwidge Danticat was born in Haiti and moved to the United States when she was twelve. She is the editor of Haiti Noir and Haiti Noir 2: The Classics, and author of several books, including Breath, Eyes, Memory (an Oprah's Book Club selection), Krik? Krak! I found it hard to tear myself away from this tale of love and vodoo. So glad amazon recommended it!

Several years ago, I was doing research on Haitian Vodou and was surprised to find so little authentic material out there. Only two sources provided glimpses into Vodou's mysterious beliefs and practices – Zora Neal Hurston’s Tell My Horse and filmmaker Maya Deren’s documentary, “Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti.” Both Hurston and Deren spent considerable time in small Haitian communities, gaining the trust of the locals, in order to gain unprecedented access to rites and ceremonies that outsiders normally never see.I’ve never encountered any fiction that has done justice to this misunderstood religion; it all tends to focus on the more sensationalistic elements (e.g, ritual animal sacrifice and zombies), but Rene Depestre’s amazing Hadriana In All My Dreams rectifies that. Briefly, it tells the story of a beautiful and much beloved young French woman who dies at the altar on her wedding day, in front of the entire Haitian village of Jacmel. But she isn’t truly dead. She has been turned into a zombie by an evil sorcerer who wants her for his own. The tale unfolds through the eyes of a teenaged boy who is a confidant and secret admirer of Hadriana, as well as Hadriana herself, who recounts her horrific experience of being trapped in a seemingly lifeless body while the townsfolk and her family argue over her funeral rites.While this might all sound like the stuff of horror fiction, Depestre’s novel is actual filled with ribald humor, steamy sexuality and ultimately, romance. The funeral itself, which coincides with the village’s annual carnival, is chockful of glorious details of Haitian Vodou traditions and ceremony. It crackles with the fire of the genuine. It does not shy away from things that Westerners might view as primitive or naïve, while at the same time, it does not sensationalize them. If anything, the story exudes a warmth and familiarity that could only come from a native son of Haiti.I am so glad I was introduced to this little gem. I went in looking for an education and left with a love story that was by turns fanciful, comical, suspenseful and thoroughly engaging.

Translated from French, Hadriana In All My Dreams is a tale of zombies and romance, Voodoo and eroticism in Haiti in the late 1930's. The narrator tells the tale of Hadriana and others who come into contact with supernatural forces, and the beliefs of the Haitians in the city of Jacmel. Depestre does a good job contrasting Voodoo and Catholicism and the relation of the native islanders to Hadriana and her family, a weatlhy white family from France. Eroticism plays a significant part of the tale, an aspect of Voodoo I was unaware of. Some of the language used related to the erotic details seemed a little off or forced, so it was helpful to read to interpreter's notes at the end where she says " figuring out how to translate Depestre's twenty or so terms for human genitalia indeed had me stretching the limits of the English language" to make me forgive some of the terms used that seemed unusual and at times, laughable. The author paints a vivid picture of Haiti and the island and its culture are one the centerpieces of this novel and I feel handled very well. The story itself bogs down in the middle- there is a lack of suspense at points, I feel - without giving much away, I will only say certain outcomes seemed inevitable but a number of pages were spent where the tale didn't seem to get any closer to resolution. Overall, the descriptions of Haiti, the contrast between Voodoo and Catholicism as well as the wealth white French family and their relations to the Haitians made this a good read and make me interested to seek our more of Depestre's work.Thanks to the publisher Akashic Books for the advance reading copy.

Charles Morris’s The Tycoons gives a good account of how the 19th century tycoon came into power. Charles Morris has a different view of the entrepreneur Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, Jay Gould and J.P. Morgan, and gives supporting facts about each entrepreneur’s character.The opening is a bit surprising because Morris does not mention the four characters that are in the subtitle. The book starts with the United States surpasses Britain in the world economy by mechanization and automation. The story of the tycoons begins in chapter three and does not have any connection to the first two chapters. Some chapters stray away from the four tycoons, but are still very interesting. The title of the book should be different because Morris writes about more than just the 19th century tycoon. This is not an easy read, and some of the analogies are out of place and do not make any sense. Overall Morris’s The Tycoons gives interesting history of how the United States because a world economic super power.

The thing that makes this book especially useful is that the author weaves their stories into a general analysis of the dramatic changes that took place in the US economy, particularly in the second half of the 19th century. After the Civil War the US became a leading manufacturer, surpassing anything to be found in Europe, and these men had important roles in this process. Three of the four came from humble origins, while JP Morgan's father had already become an importasnt figure in the banking industry. Jay Gould, who was primarily a railroad man, was able to outsmart Cornelius Vanderbilt, the US' first tycoon and not covered in the book,, at times when the latter was being helped by Morgan. These are key players in forming the United States into what it became in the 20th century. A very interesting read!!

This was an excellent book. I really liked it because it put so many things into perspective, what was happening at the same time globally and how what these guys did really impacted the globe, not just the US. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a detail and global impact to get the broader picture.

I loved this book. Very well researched. Combines major economic trends from the time, technological innovation that sprung from American culture and how these affected the lives of the tycoons while their life interconnected each other.Superb work. Very well written.

This is a very interesting book full of meaningful facts and interesting anecdotes,unfortunately the organization of presentation is less than would be ideal.There are ,for example too many instances where you have an understanding of a situation that could have been possible earlier in the narrative had the information been related in a more suitable sequence.Overall I liked the book and feel it gave me a good overview of the subjects.

I purchased the book, The Tycoons, because I have been fascinated with each of the 4 detailed in this surprisingly interesting book. The author goes into great detail how each worked his magic, but the really interesting part for me is that he thoroughly paints for the reader all of the small details of that period that made the advancement of the 4 possible. His descriptions of the background information is so very thorough and is an easy read with much substance. Interestingly, comparisons of then and now are very real and make the time of the tycoons quite a contrast with our current political and economic environment. I have read the extensive histories of Vanderbilt, Rockefeller and others. This book puts them in a context that is very understandable. A very surprising and enjoyable read. I'm even getting my wife to consider the read even tho she's not so much a history buff.

Superior scholarship went into the writing of this book. Too often the Reconstruction Era is reduced to the social evils visited upon the ex-slaves in a post-war South. Reconstruction includes the plight of blacks in the South, but also the rise of capitalism, industrialization, urbanization, organized labor, and the ingenuity of American inventors which hastened the country's progress into the Gilded Age. We cannot ignore the conquering of the West / final solution for Native Americans, and the solidification of the power of the central / Federal government ( both legislative and executive branches) over state governments. It can be argued that in the Jim Crow South States rights primacy lingered on into the 20th century, however the story of this book is the story of steel, oil, banking, and railroad industries all converging into making America very much feared by foreign competitors in Europe. Carnegie, Rockefeller, Gould, and JP Morgan were ruthless tycoons, yes, and the average worker and small business person concerns were often crushed by their monopolistic practices, including blatant market and currency manipulations. The passage of Interstate Commerce legislation and Sherman Anti-Trust Act, and the progressive anti-monopoly rhetoric of Prez Teddy Roosevelt are not part of this story (that was later) but those subjects are worth looking into. Some of this book's contents are technical when it comes to marketing ploys and manipulations: I can't pretend I understood all the maneuvers by the tycoons but that is likely a strong testament to their success. Lastly we need to remember that these tycoons were guided by the Darwinistic "survival of the fittest" mentality of that period. WHATEVER it took to succeed warranted the actions taken, the tycoons argued. Were the tycoons alive today they would still insist their actions were for the betterment of American progress in a ruthless late 19th century world. (Rockefeller was purportely a devout Christian). And ultimately the American worker benefited by the actions of the tycoons, they themselves would contend. Many of us today would conclude the carnage the tycoons wreaked for their own individual profit resulted in American global primacy before, during, and in the aftermath of WWI. In other words, you have to view history in the long term, not just the immediate cause and effect. The debate, in many ways, continues today. Read this book. It's good. RH

Growing up in the Westside of Cleveland in the 1950's, I had many chances to meet people who were displaced Europeans settling in America. In fact there were so many of these people a colloquial and derogatory term was placed to identify these people being the phrase "DP". In essence all these people were trying to do was to seek a new life in America. Little did I know of any of their stories in which they had to endure to get to the shores of the promised new land. One such story is Marian Katin's graphic depiction of her mother and herself fleeing Budapest under Nazi rule in 1944. The very fact that they were Jewish as late as 1944 under Nazi rule gives one the sense that it took a long time for some Nazi occupied countries to be affected by the genocidical programs inherent to this regime. Katin's story which tells of the Nazi terror and later the Soviet invasion shows the true plight of how people lost their homes and in many cases their very lives in the collateral damage of war. Katin's images and narrative show the true emotional and psychological scars of what transpired. The book shows a true and uncensored depiction of true events of a world gone mad. People acting under stress conditions show both their humanistic qualities to help mankind no matter what country they were from and on the other hand people acting selfishly and thinking only of themselves. This story is of people being people under the stress of a world at war caused by political minds seeking their own selfish ends. This graphic story should be added to all the serious historical accumulation of World War II studies showing what this war was truly about. This book is actual history shown in the graphic genre which deserves our serious attention. Very well done and deserving a high five star rating.

The title of Miriam Katin's graphic memoir, We Are On Our Own, is the subtext and conclusion of the story of her survival in Nazi-occupied Hungary. It's one of the most powerful and relentless memoirs I've ever read, graphic or otherwise. For sheer honesty, it ranks right up there with Wiesel's Night, Bechdel's Fun Home, and Sylvia Plath's Bell Jar.Katin's recollections concern the final weeks of WWII, when the Nazis occupying Hungary know that the game is nearly over and the Soviet Army is advancing. Miriam, who's a girl of 5 or 6, and her mother Esther flee Budapest just before the last of the Jews are rounded up. Disguising themselves as gentile peasants, they resettle in the countryside, where Esther finds herself doing what she must to survive--including becoming the mistress of the local Nazi commandant. The tale is gripping: anti-Semetic Hungarians, brutal Nazis, panic and selfishness dancing with compassion and sacrifice. Esther emerges as an incredibly admirable woman.The memoir begins with Esther reading the Biblical creation story to Miriam. But as the harrowing story unfolds, whatever faith in a benevolent and protective God that Miriam and Esther might've had drops away. Time and again, they realize that they, like all humanity, are on their own. The recollections are intercut with contemporary scenes in which Miriam, now a grown woman and still without religious faith, is conflicted about her own child going to Hebrew school and temple.We Are on Our Own's honesty is refreshing as well as potentially disturbing. How can one survive the Holocaust with a comfortable faith--or any faith, for that matter--intact? This is a question too frequently sidestepped, because the answer to it can be unpleasant. Katin doesn't shy away.

Or is it?This is the story of Miriam & her mother. Two Jews in Hungary. Miriam's father is fighting in the Hungarian Army. Life is becoming harder for Jews in Budapest. Miriam's mother fears what will happen & instead of staying & hoping for the best, like the vast majority of Jews sadly did; she chooses to run.Miriam is just about four. Her mother leaves almost all their possessions & leaves behind their family & friends. Her mother disguises herself as a peasant & Miriam is passed off as her illegitimate daughter. Miriam's mother even thought about faking their own deaths, so that no one would come looking for them.Her mother finds them shelter where she can. Miriam is quite straightforward in her telling. Her mother was especially brave. She does all she needs to do in order to keep both of them alive. Even, if it means allowing a German Nazi officer to have sex with her each night, so he will not denounce them as Jews. That episode ends when his Mistress finds out & she intends to denounce Miriam's mother. They flee in the nick of time.Eventually, the war ends. Miriam's mother searches for her husband. The Jewish man in charge of the search & rescue committee which is helping her, befriends her. He falls in love with her, but also learns the husband is alive & is also searching for his wife & child. Soon after, the illustrations end. There are two more pages telling in brief the story of this family in the ensuing years.Find this book. Read it. Be moved by it. Share it with others.

My husband and I are considering relocating to the Raleigh/Durham area, and I have been researching homes and neighborhoods online. I wanted a comprehensive map for reference, as I found it difficult to use online sources. Accordingly, I ordered this street atlas. It has a recent date, so I figured it would be very helpful in pinpointing the locations of various properties. Unfortunately, it does not seem to be up-to-date at all. Many, many of the properties I have found online are on streets that are not listed in this book. This is true even for properties that were built a number of years ago.

This is a good easy to use Atlas of Raleigh, Durham and surrounding areas such as Chapel Hill and Cary. While it may not be as in depth as previous atlases it makes up for this by being very easy to use. It has the roads and major highways and this is what is really important in an atlas. It's small size makes it easy to take along to, compared with other, especially older atlases which tend to be bulky.A good price, compact size, make it ideal for someone new to the area to get accustomed or someone who is not tech savvy and doesn't use google maps or GPS.

Text is so small that it's hard to read. I remember these maps from 10 years ago, when they were easy to use.Sigh, I suppose that GPS has just taken over.

Service was great but this atlas sucks compared to my ADC atlas. You get what you pay for.

Al Geiberger is almost as famous for being the SyberVision model as he is for shooting a 59. This book is a wonderful summary of the swing and provides keys to playing better. It is should even be better as a companion to the SyberVision video that stars Geiberger. The video sold over 1 million copies in the 1980's and became the rage of golf all over the world. I just purchased the re-release of the video on DVD from SyberVision at [...] Hopefully, it and the book will work for me as well as it has reportedly done for others.

Most of my searching for golf help is looking for ways to focus on tempo and timing. This book was very helpful in its isolation of just the few keys that Gieberger uses in his swing. His swing keys on the left arm and leg swing. Gieberger must be a man of few words. The book doesn't fill up with tips unrelated to the subject of tempo. He has a cool video too, just his swinging set to music - no words at all. His swing is old-school, a lot like Nicklaus'with the raised left heel. It's a good book!

I read this book almost cover to cover in one evening. Mr. Geibergers' technique is simple, easy to understand and to copy. I have learn more by reading this book than any other book I read. I strongly believe that this book is a must to any golfer looking to improve his swing.

The Wei-Chuan Publishing Company (apparently connected with the Taiwanese Wei-Chuan Cooking School), has produced a good number of Cookbooks, mostly dealing with Chinese cookery but also coveing other Asian cuisines as well. I own over a dozen of these now and I like all of them. More importantly, I like all of these books for tmuch he same reasons and, accordingly, I have decided to do a general review that applies to each of them and then provide a few individualized comments where appropriate.Basically, the Wei-Chuan publications are authored/editored by several different persons but the format is largely the same. Each book is divided into logical sections (Meats, Vegetables, Appetizers, etc.) and nearly every recipe is accompanied by a good photograph of the result with some recipes having additional pictures of the preparation as well. This feature alone makes these books well worth the purchase. Another feature of this cuilinary series is that the books are written in China and, at least as far as the books on Chinese cuisine is concerned, the reader need have no issues with 'authenticity'. I personally also like the fact that all of the books are written in Chinese characters and then translated into English. This has has an added bonus of occasionally providing some unintentional amusement due to a particularly 'unfortunate' translation but I specially like it as I am teaching myself Mandarin and these books are excellent learning tools. I often take one on the plane with me when I travel (along with dictionaries) and can spend hours happily translating passages. It is amazing how often the actual translation of a recipe title bears little resemblance to the English title provided.Finally, I have to say that the recipes in all of these books are interesting and he ones that I have tried to reproduce have worked out well. Mainly though, I just like reading through these books for inspiration and enjoyment. The money I have spent has been repaid many times over.The We-Chuan books I currently own are as follows:Chinese Cuisine - Very good introductory section. Recipes range from simple everyday dishes to exotic banquet style delicacies.Chinese Dim Sum: Wel-Chuan Cultural and Educational Foundation - Great 'step-by-step' pictures for many recipes. Bit too much emphasis on sweet rather than savoury for my personal taste.Chinese Snacks - More of the same as in the Dim Sum book. No 'step-by-step' pictures but I actually like this book better.Chinese Appetizers and Garnishes - I haven't attempted much from this book but I am thankful for the great 'step-by-step' pictures provided.Favorite Home Dishes Chinese Cooking - As the name suggests, most of the recipes are simple and, thus, easy to prepare.Chinese Cuisine Beijing Style - Lots of Imperial Banquet dishes and many exotic foreign influenced meals that have been 'Chinesified'.Chinese Cuisine: Cantonese Style - 75 Cantonese recipes. Good recipes with nice pictures but a sparse introduction.Chinese Cuisine Shanghai Style - Typically good Wei-Chuan quality but probably my least favorite of the 'regional' Chinese cookbooks.Chinese Cuisine-Taiwanese Style - Excellent Book. Some truly unique recipes I have never seen elsewhere. I love to browse this volume.Chinese Cuisine: Szechuan Style - I love Szechuan food especially but I would still treat this book as a favorite anyway.Indian Cuisine - A nice book but be aware that the recipes Indian dishes for the Chinese palate, not Indian.Vietnamese Cuisine - Great recipes.Japanese Cuisine - Nearly as good as many books I have that are written by Japanese chefs.Korean Cuisine - My favorite of the We-Chuan non-Chinese cookbooks so far,Singaporean, Malaysian & Indonesian Cuisine - My least favorite Wei-Chuan book so far. Somewhat interesting but I don't look at it much.Finally, I have a new Wei-Chuan book on order and will continue to buy from time to time. I will review separately as I read these new books.

This book is seriously helpful. One of 3 Cookbooks I consider necessary in my kitchen.

Having been born and raised in Shanghai I remember the wonderful dishes we used to eat which are not available in most Chinese restaurants not specializing in Shanghai food. What a pleasure it was to see and use a cookbook of Shanghai food, containing a good sampling of the cuisine, and authentic to boot.
