How did I forget to write and post a review of this? The second of Marshall Thornton’s “Pinx†series, it takes us deeper into the life of Noah Valentine, a twenty-something who inherited his ex, Jeffer Cole’s video store in Los Angeles’ Silver Lake. Noah is HIV-positive, and given the year is 1992, he stands at the edge of that moment when the plague that decimated my generation began to become something one might possibly live with rather than unavoidably die of.Then the murders start. Again. This time, it seems to be about some mysterious Holy Grail of Hollywood memorabilia, and Noah is once more dragged away from the shelves of his video store and into the shadowy back rooms of the film industry and its sometimes-less-than-sane denizens. Everyone he meets is a revelation and an education, for him as well as for Thornton’s readers.Supporting him in every way, without confronting his real issues, are his erstwhile friends and downstairs neighbors Marc and Louis. More complicated is their friendly local detective, Javier O’Shea, whose evident interest in Noah was so heart-breaking in the first book. The mystery that Noah and his underqualified friends have to puzzle out is interesting and peculiar—two traits one expects from any novel set in Los Angeles. But the book is really more about Noah and the shifting sands of his own life. Unlike the noir Nick Novak series—which is magnificent and almost operatic in its romantic darkness—there is something weirdly sitcom-ish about this, as if a gay Lucy and Ethel (and Fred and Ricky, I guess) were trying to solve a murder while one of them secretly had cancer.Yeah. Weird like that.Marshall Thornton doesn’t really let us have any easy emotions. This series isn’t like his truly comic stories. Noah and Nick have different challenges in their lives, and Chicago is not like LA; but they share a darkness that can’t help but touch our hearts in a very profound way.Anything Thornton writes is worth reading. But even with his lighter books, he’s no lightweight.
As others have said, this is another excellent series from Marshall Thornton. I follow his Boystown series also ... he is a fabulous writer who really knows his stuff. I won't reiterate the story (yes, read them in order) ... the characters are well written and I really feel for Noah but I do hope he ultimately realizes that EVERYONE deserves to be loved and that he reaches out to Javier at some point: seems like a really good fit. I've read several autobiographies about HIV and its effects on those who both have it and those who care for people who have it. Noah's young ... too young to be pushing people away. I hope, as this series goes forward, he realizes he IS loved by many. I can't wait for the next book ... keep writing, Mr Thornton!
Fantastic, as always. Really interesting, quirky characters. A page turner plot. And an invaluable historical perspective on gay life, especially during the age of AIDS. I had the thought that the lovable protagonist of this story might not survive the AIDS crisis, which made the story that much more engaging and, in it's own way, important.
While the first book made me like the characters, this one made me care for their lives. One particular life. I cried a few womanly tears over it. I kinda think that the neighbors know already...
Great second book in series. Mr. Thornton puts such important real life issues in his books. It all twines so well into the story. The characters make you feel what they feel.
I really liked this book. I love Marshall Thornton's writing, he transports me to the time and place of his stories. This was a great mystery that kept me guessing to the end. I can't wait for Number 3.
Loved this book. I can't wait for number 3.
A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review (A MelanieM Review)Rating: 5 stars out of 5It’s about a dress. A valuable blue sequined dress worn by a famed actress in a film from the 1940s. For some reason everyone thinks video storeowner Noah Valentine has it. Which might not be a big deal except that it’s connected to the murder of a prominent Hollywood costumer. In the second of the Pinx Video Mysteries, Noah attempts to solve the mystery of the dress. To do so, he must confront a legendary film icon Wilma Wanderly, hunky police Detective Javier O’Shea, the dowager Queen of Watts and a couple of bitter ex-friends.I am wild about Hidden Treasures and the Pinx Video Mystery series by Marshall Thornton. Extremely well written, evocative of an era still so close to ours that we can remember all the telling details that makes this book and series ring with familiarity and yet far enough removed that it feels nostalgic. Ah video tapes cartridges...VHS...some may remember from Blockbuster if you didn't have the smaller privately owned stores like this nearby? Clunky black rectangles that you rushed to return? No?Thornton's tales are supplied with the names of songs, tv series, movies, books, and every day "go to" gadgets and calendars you had to have. Yet, none of it feels false or as though the author is dumping too much "historical" facts into his novel. No, it's all woven into this series with an ease and a "normalcy" that often hardly ripples the narrative. Maybe a slight double take, an appreciative nod, a "oh I forgot about those" from me...but often I'm so buried in the story and the characters that a mention bubbled up pages later in my mind and a note to go back later to look it up.Oh, man, these characters. Especially the pragmatic yet wounded Noah. I have a hard time coming up with the right words not only to describe him but also how much I love this character. And it's a love that is growing deeper by the book. He's admirable, intelligent, courageous, and often kind. He's not hopeful, not yet. I'm not sure he ever will be in these times. But each book is proving to be a revelation about him and for him. I won't say more. You need to read the first story Night Drop (A Pinx Video Mystery, #1 to understand what's going on with Noah and his history.  To say anything more spoils that incredible story and this one. And that just won't do.Noah is surrounded by friends equally memorable. You got to know them in Night Drop but here they actually feel like family. As does a certain Detective. They feel alive, believable, authentic, and in some cases, haunting. This was the 80's after all.Marshall Thornton has won awards for his writing. I hope he's won them for this series. If not, he should because they are incredible. The writing is superb, the characters beyond memorable, the mysteries complicated and entertaining, and the stories themselves have staying power, an emotional heft that carries far beyond those little words The End.Now to wait and see what's next in store for Noah and Pinx Video. I can hardly wait. If you haven't discovered Marshall Thornton, pick up his Pinx Video series, both of them. I highly recommend them both, including Hidden Treasures.Cover art is amazing. I just love the covers for this series. Interesting, pertinent, and great for branding.
