I recently drove for 13 days through the French Pyrenees (with a short visit to Spain) using this excellent map. When scoping out routes -- snow was very heavy at times and a couple of the cols we had hoped to use were closed -- we showed the map to Tourist Bureaus in five different towns.In each case, the agents were fascinated with the map, commenting favorably on accuracy and in a couple of cases on the waterproof paper. Many of the towns have long, compound names (the result of the consolidation of a number of smaller towns), and National Geographic was unfailingly accurate.We used Avery Rectangular Color Coding Labels to mark out a route each day, highlighting interesting stops, and the different colors were excellent in highlighting various positions, depending on what color was predominate at each location on the map itself. The labels were easy to remove with no residue UNLESS the map was wet. (The French side of the Pyrenees receives a great deal of rain so the map did often get wet.) So, we were very careful to dry both the map and the coding label before removing the coding label; when we forgot, we found that the residue could be rubbed off after it was completely dry without harming the map surface. Overall, these labels were a very useful aid to using the map during the drive.We also used the same colored label to mark the page of our guide books for each stop we planned to make, a great cross checking system when deciding whether to actually stop when we were running a little late at one point or another. Our favorites guides for this journey were the Michelin Green Guide Roussillon Pyrénées (Green Guide/Michelin) and Gascony, the Pyrenees & Toulouse, 5th (Country & Regional Guides - Cadogan). Both of us are fluent in English and one of us is fluent in French; the labels worked great in both guides and in both languages. :)One other excellent feature: the map is printed on two sides so that it can cover a great expanse of territory and yet display quite amount of information of an exceedingly complex part of the world. Nonetheless, it folds up into a very compact package, about the size of the Green Guide, but able to be open to the area we were traversing. At the request of a reader, I've posted a picture of the map, complete with a few of the coding labels in place.The Pyrenees are a fascinating place to visit, and this fine map enhanced an already thrilling experience.Robert C. The scale of this map is 1:275,000 (wish it would be mentioned in description) which is perfect for planning/traveling by bicycle or car in the Pyrenees. Of course, not detailed enough for hiking as you would need a local 50,000 or 25,000 map for that purpose.The roads are well detailed from red (major) to yellow to white (smallest) with all towns & mountain pass mentioned.For more detail I would recommend using Michelin map 342 Hautes-Pyrenees/Pyrenees Atlantiques 1:150,000 and Catalunya Geo/Estel 1:250,000,perfect for driving/cycling.For one map though this is perfect especially since it is waterproof.

I generally like the Nat Geo maps and have many for the National Parks. I’m planning on hiking in Andorra so when I saw this one, I was excited. However, when it arrived, Andorra was represented by and area of about 3” x 4” or about 1% of the total map area. Quite useless.If you want the best topo map of Andorra, you need the Alpina 40. It is listed on Amazon, but not in stock. Shop elsewhere if necessary, but don’t settle for anything else.

I love the paper this is printed on, think it may hold up well. The detail seems pretty amazing- I can't wait to get over there!

Not a very detailed map and very hard to plan trips with as it leaves out so much.

Okay but had to buy additional maps with hiking trail map details for trailheads and smaller roads too hiking the Pyrenees

Scale's a bit large to be totally useful, but give a good overview perspective of the region.

Great map with lots of detail! The finish is good too. This is a comprehensive map that will not rip easily.

I like the book and I ordered the other two. Here are some thoughts on who might like this and who might not.If you are a huge GAME OF THRONES fan and want all kinds of sword play and magical systems and countries and families and three hundred characters, this book may not totally satisfy you.If you want nonstop fights or smart alec talk or people getting skewered or burned up by a magical fireball, this may not do it for you.If you like the more traditional type of fantasy novel with a young person (though not adolescent in this story) who is somewhat humble and does not fully understand his family background travelling around from place to place and learning about himself and meeting a few girls who blush, then you might well enjoy this one.There is some sword play, a little big of magic, some bad guys, a few people we can not really figure out as far as their motivation. but mainly we see the character travel around and try to learn about himself and his background. The pace is somewhat slow, no amazing and sudden change to the character, no supernatural evil character overshadowing the whole thing.One criticism I would make. Occasionally things happen a bit too quickly, like the huge ship that appears suddenly in the harbor and then seems to play a sudden and large role we were not really prepared for.The author does not build a new world of complex politics and magic, but I felt very comfortable in the world of taverns and swords and old masters at the college who were gruff but actually ok men and women and ships sailing the salty sea with wizened and toothless sailors who are rough but good hearted and the stinky wharf and the city watch....... I enjoyed my time in this world and found the prose well written, unlike some recent books that seem written by twelve year olds.Not cutting edge, but familiar and well done. A good first book! I doubt anyone will actually dislike it, but some may like it more than others.

The beginning of this book was interesting, exciting, and mysterious. Initially, the character of Caldan was likeable, a typical hero to a fantasy novel. Then the story took on a very slow pace. Not much happens for most of the book. It felt like many threads were being set up to converge later in the story, but so many threads! Half way through the book, new characters were being introduced. Caldan, although he is suppose to be very smart but naive due to his being brought up by monks, was not curious about his new-found powers until much later. For a smart guy, he seemed to be trusting of the wrong people and suspicious of the good ones. Although the ending was a bit more fast paced and exciting, it left many loose ends, I guess to set up for the next books. So far, I'm not impressed enough to want to find out what happens next. Probably won't be reading the rest of the trilogy.

For those who only read the first line of any review, this is a good book and worth the price so click buy now.For anyone still skeptical, or those who read an entire review; I'll try to justify the above statement. This story formula has been done in many variations countless times. Orphan boy with strange gifts grows into manhood and realizes he's something special. a.k.a there's a hero coming of age for the first book in an anticipated series.... shocker. But the truth is, we all love that story. It's why we read it in so many variations over and over. A Crucible of Souls tells that story, and parallels it with intriguing behind the scenes events centered on an impending invasion no one is prepared for. The mechanics of magic are slowly elaborated, which allowed the reader to understand the development of its usage. And characters, while maybe a bit simple, converse with each other in believable context.Is anything radical about this story? Not really. Is there any one aspect that clearly stands above others in the genre? Not really. Then why 4 stars? Because it's all done well. Characters, settings, plot, intrigue, and of course the "world hinging in the balance but nobody knows it yet" thing. Every part of a good fantasy novel is here, and it's all executed above average. A book I would recommend to any fan of fantasy.

I found this book and series to be a page turner. The author really has the potential to be one of the greats. I liked the unique magic system and its creativity. The characters were well thought out and developed and evolved with the story. I really have no complaints about the writing other than I wanted to jump back to different view points quicker at some parts of the series but thats all me in that i tend to like off and odd characters. the author has an excellent grasp of writing climactic moments and the end of the series was very satisfying and well done. Of the three I liked the 3rd book the best as everything was woven together into the final conflicts. Very well done and this author is now on my "watch for" list.This review is honest and I am a confirmed purchaser for my kindle here on amazon.

A mix of coming of age and high sorcery, with a touch of darker fantasy sprinkled on top. Conversations and character interactions are below average but they are overcome by an interesting plot and a well thought out magic system.Positives:+ Interesting assortment of POV characters+ Interesting Plot Lines+ Unique magic system that is well thought out and presented in a much better fashion then other books.Negatives:- Character interactions. Especially early in the book. Conversations were unrealistic, i think they got slightly better later on.- Main character is slightly too 'perfect'.- Sluggish beginning.

All Akhmin filled the streets to celebrate the event with music, dance, song, feasting, and gladness. Sunlight flashed from the brilliantly painted walls of the temples and the enameled gold necklaces, bracelets, and earrings of the highborn men and women. The air was filled with a wonderful jumble of delicious scents from many food vendors. Everyone seemed to be laughing. Father carried me on his shoulders so that I could have a clear view of the festivi- ties. I love this book. It does a good job of pulling you into the day to day life in ancient Egypt while following a strong and capable woman in her struggles with life and love. It is a clean book and well written.

She loves them ...... She read them first when she was 9. She is now 11 and just finished another reading of them. There is a lot out there for her age....but not a lot with quality and meaningful content. These books are both entertaining and educational...like the best of historical fiction.

Daughter 11 years old is studying Egyptian history at school, so I bought her this book, she loved it and it is appropriate for her age in all the matter.

My son, a 6th grader, read this book for a school report, so this is his review: Excellent book! Reading the second one, The Sphinx Queen, on my own because I liked it so much. Chose it over other choices and very glad.

Easy read and sweet story, we have been to Egypt and have read different stories, this one I enjoyed a lot.

This was interesting for its setting and characters, but the story felt familiar and slightly predictable. I still liked it but probably won't read more.

I really enjoyed this book! It was fantastic! It is an easy, fun read that you can't put down! I really enjoyed it

About the Author

Yaakov Katz is Editor-in-Chief of The Jerusalem Post. He previously served for close to a decade as the paper's military reporter and defense analyst and is the co-author of the books: The Weapon Wizards: How Israel Became a High-Tech Military Superpower and Israel vs. Iran: The Shadow War. Prior to taking up the role of Editor-in-Chief, Katz served for two years as a senior policy adviser to Israel’s Minister of Economy and Minister of Diaspora Affairs. In 2013, Katz was one of 12 international fellows to spend a year at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University. Originally from Chicago, Katz also has a law degree from Bar Ilan University. He lives in Jerusalem with his wife and four children.

I wish this book had been better. There were some decent ideas on which items to look for at both thrift shops and yard sales to then resell. The list of items was limited and your chances of finding some of these would be highly unlikely, such as floppy disks. The strength of this book is in showing the reader that it is possible to find second hand items worth your time to resell.
