I bought this as a Christmas present for a friend, who absolutely died laughing. The designs themselves are not unlike any other adult coloring book - with intricate patterns meant to grab attention and force you to focus on it. However, the little "clouds" added to each page add hilarious benefit. It was a hit, and part of me thinks I should've gotten a few more!

Used it as a white elephant gift for a family gathering. It was a big hit. My grama ended up with the book and thought it was about the funniest things she'd ever seen.

About the Author

Magnus Nilsson is the head chef of Fäviken Magasinet restaurant in Sweden. After training as a chef and sommelier in Sweden he worked with Pascal Barbot of L'Astrance in Paris before joining Fäviken as a sommelier. Within a year he had taken over the running of the restaurant, which is currently number 19 in the San Pellegrino World's 50 Best Restaurants list. Magnus is the author of the Fäviken cookbook, also published by Phaidon. He features in the Emmy-Award winning US PBS-TV series, The Mind of a Chef, and the Netfix docu-series, Chef's Table. Uffda. I think a lot of the low-star reviewers are getting it wrong because of a misguided expectation for what this book is. It is a chronicle of the wide range of what and how people of the Nordic countries eat, with really beautiful and simple photography. It is not a splashy cookbook from a Food Network television star. It is clear that the author is not shooting for a mass American audience. He's focused on chronicling a true representation of the subject, not recreating classics to appeal to American tastes.Some reviewers are calling out that this book is not inspiring (I strongly disagree, read the Pastries chapter and tell me you aren't surrounded by the warmth of cardamom and cinnamon), but I believe what they are getting at is the strength of the book. He doesn't care if the recipes make our mouths water. He cares that what he writes is true.There are several recipes the author does not even like, but he still includes because they are representative of what people from the Nordic countries eat and like. This furthers my opinion of this being primarily a journalistic work, versus a traditional cookbook, as he prioritizes the truth over an attempt to sell.If you want to be inspired to reach new limits in the kitchen, reach elsewhere. If you want to be come truly educated on this subject, dig in. It is an important work. Well done, Mr. Nilsson. I made the cinnamon buns on Sunday and they were fantastic.

Magnus is a real inspiration of mine. I watch anything I can find on this guy, love his ideas about food and culture. This book is huge...like make your bookshelf wobble huge. I haven't had much of a chance to dive in because I'm just finishing up his other book Faviken, which you should buy now, stop reading this and go buy The Nordic Cookbook and Faviken...now!, Well, well worth every penny,..pennies I spent. This guy spent a year or more researching and writing a cookbook with not even one of his own recipes in this book, that's dedication to the craft my friends.

What a beautiful and rare book. I had seen the documentary about Magnus Nilsson and have always been intrigued by Nordic culture and cuisine. This is the kind of cook book you want to sit down with along with a cup of tea and look through it leisurely. The photos are exquisite. And if you like food and cuisine as a point of entry to culture Magnus is a wonderful guide. It's a labor of love. Whether you cook or not, it's fascinating and beautifully done.

I intend to be using this book all the days of my life. It has a zillion recipes, and plenty of them with a lot of opinion. I like the opinions too. There's not a lot of showboating dishes here. It intends, and succeeds, in projecting the culinary traditions of the Nordic countries as they are, not how they might be if they were part of a television program.

This is a wondrously huge cookbook. It's not just a collection of recipes but it's also glimpses into Nordic culture and its food history--through photos, chapter prefaces, and recipe background info.While a small portion of the recipes do call for exotic meats not common in other worlds, many of them can be substituted for other meats. Like the section for Game, the bird in question can be substituted for common quail, Cornish game hen, etc. Of course the exact result may differ, but you can still get a taste of the spirit of the dish and get a unique experience out of it. And not to worry: there are also entire chapters dedicated to the common meats, like beef, pork, and seafood.The recipes are not overly complex--they don't call for perfect mastery of intricate techniques or fancy tools and equipment. They are humble dishes, but presented from a different perspective and palate than what we may be used to. Many dishes may feel so familiar to you already, but there is something different about it, like maybe it uses a completely different kind of sauce or flavor profile, so it's still approachable and not so exotic seeming that you could never cook it.I find this book great for getting new ideas for casual home cooking, especially since most recipes use common ingredients already. I especially like the sections covering recipes and history of drinks, jams, and condiments.I expect to use this book for many years, with many sticky bookmarks sticking out of it. The only con is that the book is never going to stand on a cookbook stand because it's so thick!

This is the book I could have, should have, would have written if I had the experience and depth of knowledge of Nordic cuisine that Magnus has. I have been translating, testing and modifying Swedish recipes for 40 years and find this book to be completely in line with what I already know plus it takes me way beyond what I did not know. If you want to whip a batch of meatballs for a social function this, or nearly any other Scandinavian cookbook will do the job. But if you really want to go in deep on the Nordic food culture you need this one. I have a collection of about 15 Swedish cookbooks and, as Magnus says in the introduction to his book, most of them suck. This one does not suck. Here you can find how to make falukorv or lutfisk from scratch, both recipes not found in any other book I have ever seen. The only negative comment I have is that the language is decidedly British and it can get confusing. It took me a while to figure out what pluck (lungs) were and I had to chuckle at rutabaga, called Swedes in England. So here is Magnus, a Swede, calling a rutabaga a Swede. Oh well.

This is such a beautiful book!! Gorgeous photos!! Very thorough collection of Norwegian recipes and traditional Scandinavian food! I gave this book to my dad for Christmas, since he is 1/2 Norwegian. Honestly, I had a hard time parting with it! But then on Christmas Day, I got this same book as a gift from my mother-in-law! How magical is that!!I am allergic to wheat and cows milk, so I haven't made many of the recipes. But we did really enjoy the hasselback potatoes! And even though I can't eat a lot of the recipes due to wheat/dairy, I still treasure this book in my collection! It brings up all the good feels of the love of my Norwegian grandmother.

The cons didn't matter much to me since I wanted it for design ideas, but anyone interested in the traditional meaning of symbols should look elsewhere.

This book is very small, which is not necessarily an indication of quality. However, this book is NOT an example of a carefully outlined and researched reference. Its scope is narrow, and many symbols are not labeled. There are other books out there that offer much more information at a better value.

"The Book of Signs" is an illustration-rich collection of Byzantine, medieval and related European symbols. The Dover Publications edition is a clean softcover edition of the work which is printed in the author Rudolf Koch's "magere deutsche" typeface (a Gothic / old-style German typeface similar to those used in Germany in the 19th century and earlier).Useful to the medievalist, the occultist as well as the fantasy roleplayer, the collection includes nearly 500 different symbols collected in 14 chapters. Symbols include Christian, astrological, botanical, and chemical ones from the Byzantine and European traditions; personal and family signs such as early monograms, stonemason's signs and armorial signs; and the Norse runes. The signs themselves are woodcuts, which combined with the older style Germanic typeface give the book a distinctive look. Chapters include a short introduction and most signs include a short description.The book's strength lies in its wide range of medieval symbols and its evocative visual look (woodcut symbols and German typeface). As a research tool it has limited utility, but for its graphic appearance it is a good choice for the layman. On a side note for AD&D gamers and World of Greyhawk enthusiasts, this work was used as inspiration by Gary Gygax for many of the symbols presented in the World of Greyhawk folio and 1983 boxed set.

I first found this book at my local library and fell in love with all the interesting and little known symbols. The author does put a Christian bent on a lot of the symbols that I could honestly due without. Even on some symbols with a clearly Pagan origin. For example The Triquerta, ( a symbol of The Triple Goddess) he claims is for "banishing evil spirits". The book was written (clearly) a VERY long time ago by an obviously very religious man, but the symbols themselves are so interesting that it is necessary to not get stuck on one mans interpretation. Once you can get past that, the collection of symbolism is enjoyable.

Good for references on just the symbol itself but lacks depth and additional information. The alphabetical text was in medieval calligraphy that was sort of difficult to read. The book itself is small and the front cover is a representation of what you'll be seeing in the book.

Weird font - which a shame. Would have been a good product without all the theatrics.

Pretty Basic but I like it's simplicity. Clear concise and to the point. Definitely a great starting point for any historic symbol enthusiast. Great portable size and light to carry for quick reference. Highly recommended.

This is a great Resource to read as a group. Reading ahead is beneficial but for those who don’t do well with that it is still great for discussion. Very helpful for small groups.

Relationships set the foundation of human existence. We desire the companionship of one another and God’s plan indicates that humans live and function together. Yet, because of sin, the natural inclination in relationships is to construct relationships around me, myself, and I. It’s no surprise then that so many of our relationships often exist in a state of devastation. Considering that we judge life by our relationships (pg. 133) it is no surprise then that many people are so dissatisfied with their lives. For this reason, Edward Welch has written Caring for One Another: 8 Ways to Cultivate Meaningful Relationships.If you are not familiar with Ed Welch, you need to be. The materials that he has produced are some of the best when it comes to living in fellowship with fellow sinners. In addition to being a faculty member with the Christian Counseling & Educational Foundation, Ed Welch is a biblical counselor with much experience and education. As one who counsels through broken relationships, he pulls from both experience and the Scriptures to guide believers in their relationship with one another.Caring for One Another is only 80 pages, so one cannot claim there is little time to read it, but only that it takes much time to put into practice. Starting with a foundation of humility, Welch keeps adding a step with each chapter guiding readers towards more personal relationships with one another. These including knowing the person (their heart, their influences, their life). From their he addresses the need for serious conversations including those about suffering and sin, but joined together with these tough conversations is the need to pray for one another.Ed Welch is certain not to overwhelm readers but seeks to guide them in this very important aspect of the Christian life. Therefore, readers will find themselves immersed in the Scriptures and confronted with practical applications of them. Through discussions questions included at the end of each chapter, Welch forces readers to deal with the teachings in a very personal way.An interesting foundation to the book is Welch’s definition of grace, which he defines a “God’s moving towards us in Christ” (pg. 21). He takes that to note that as God moves towards us through Christ, we should take the initiative to move towards others. Specifically, he uses phrases such as “Jesus listens, we listen.” In one sense, he is not wrong. However, the definition seems to neglect the depth of God’s grace, and so readers should take note of this.In reading through the book, I am left with the question, “Is this book necessary?” The books shortness ensures that he is not needlessly wasting readers’ time. However, the principles that he brings forth would seem to be basic and understandable by most genuine Christians . . . even if they are not always practiced. As a result, what seems to be lacking is not more teaching, but more accountability in this realm.Overall, the book is good and I don’t mind recommending it to some who want a basic introduction to the topic of relationships without a major investment of time. Yet, a better book would be one that he has already written called Side by Side, a book that we frequently recommend to others (although it is geared more towards a counseling/discipleship relationship). Another good book that is perhaps more worthwhile specifically on this topic is The Company We Keep: In Search of Biblical Friendships by Jonathan Holmes (Note: Ed Welch wrote the forward for this book).Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher at no cost to me for the purposes of review. I was expecting a 'book' and this is more like a manual. My finches are not mentioned in it but it does contain some useful information though I learned more online.

I ordered this book hoping for some guidelines on starting an aviary and learning about the different finch species.Big mistake, this book is for beginners who know nothing about bird care.Also I would have liked to at least some pictures of the few species it does mention.So if you have a zebra finch or a society finch and need to learn the very basics of care this book is for you.But if you already know how to feed and water your finch then pass this up.

I started my finch research with this book. The book provides good basic information on the care, feeding and breeding of domestic finches. It's a good starting point for a complete novice finch owner, though the Finch Handbook by Barrons Pet Handbooks is more detailed and probably a better overall reference.

I enjoyed this book. It's definitely for beginners but has a lot of information in it that I profited from.

This book is written for the lay-man. I love this book. I love all the "for Dummies" books anyway. I have several. If you own Finches, buy this book. If you want to own Finches, buy this book. I cannot say enough about the "for Dummies" books. This book was very inexpensive on Amazon.com. I am so glad I found this book on Amazon.com. It's 19.99 brand new. I bought mine for less than 10.00. This book tell you everything you need to know about Finches. And if you think you know all about Finches, this book will show that you don't. This is a fantastic book.

My family owns some happy finches thanks to this book. We didn't realize we could give our finches so many fresh foods. We do everyday now. :)
