The Age of Eisenhower: America and the World in the 1950s, by William I. Hitchcock

Review

"Outstanding." (Michael O'Donnell The Atlantic)“Like the supposedly conformist and complacent 1950s, too long eclipsed by the drama and turbulence of the 1960s, so has Dwight Eisenhower too long been dismissed as a distracted codger compared with  the youthful president who succeeded him, John F. Kennedy. Now William I. Hitchcock's trenchant and compelling book convincingly redresses the balance. He reminds us of the gravity of the issues at stake in the 1950s—including increasingly violent clashes over civil rights and the prospect of nuclear Armageddon—and persuasively portrays Eisenhower as an engaged and thoughtful leader who deeply shaped the nation's destiny for decades to come.”   (David M. Kennedy, Donald J. McLachlan Professor of History Emeritus, Stanford University, and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Freedom From Fear)"Expansive. . . . Hitchcock discusses the full range of challenges that occupied Eisenhower across the eight years of his presidency. . . . [A] rich narrative." (Richard Rhodes The Wall Street Journal)"A splendid biography." (Joseph C. Goulden The Washington Times)“William Hitchcock has given us an absorbing account of an era that looms large not only in the long history of the West but in our time. Dwight Eisenhower helped create a strong, dynamic, and in many ways enviable America. There were flaws, yes, and dreams deferred—but taken all in all, Ike’s achievements on the battlefield and in the public square of peacetime are towering, and we live still in their long shadow.” (Jon Meacham, author of DESTINY AND POWER: The American Odyssey of George H.W. Bush and AMERICAN LION)“Eisenhower’s steady hand, deep experience, and seriousness of purpose served America well during eight perilous years. William Hitchcock’s insightful and stimulating study couldn’t be more timely.” (H. W. Brands, Jack S. Blanton Sr. Chair in History, University of Texas at Austin, and author of The General vs. the President: MacArthur and Truman at the Brink of Nuclear War)"Magisterial. . . . [Hitchcock] offers rich evidence of Eisenhower’s charisma and quiet but adroit leadership."  (Jay Strafford Richmond Times Dispatch)"A complete and persuasive assessment." (Booklist (starred review))“William I. Hitchcock’s The Age of Eisenhower is a superb synthesis, comprehensive in its coverage of domestic and international issues, current in its treatment of what the documents contain, and consistently fair in the conclusions it reaches.  By so successfully showing what’s known about the Eisenhower era, this book more than any other will shape how the future remembers it.” (John Lewis Gaddis, Yale University, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of George F. Kennan: An American Life)"The Age of Eisenhower is a page-turner masterpiece about what we Americans can accomplish when we try to be and do our best. William Hitchcock tells the remarkable story of how a values-laden boy from Kansas grew up to become one of the most important—and best—leaders in modern history." (Jim Lehrer)

#31,536 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

University of Virginia history professor, William Hitchcock has a written a very sympathetic, and I think accurate, history of the Eisenhower era of 1944 – 1961. I grew up as a child of the era in a middle class neighborhood in Queens. To us the 1950’s was not an era of blandness and racism as liberals would describe it, but rather it was one of hope and optimism. It was truly a time of a broadly shared prosperity. We were well aware of Jim Crow in the South, but every day Jackie Robinson took the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers we cheered him on and knew that the world was becoming a better place.Eisenhower’s opening acts were to make peace in Korea and to stay out of France’s war in Indochina. To be sure his time represented the heyday of the CIA with successful coups in Guatemala and Iran. Further he deftly dealt with Senator Joe McCarthy watching him burn out.Just before the election of 1956 Eisenhower faced the dual crises of the Hungarian Revolution along with the Anglo-French/Israeli invasion of Egypt during the Suez crisis. Hitchcock calls Eisenhower a realist in failing to intervene in Hungary after the Soviets invade. I am not so sure, The U.S. could have done more. As to the Suez crisis he completely ignored the reason for Israel’s participation. Namely it was a reaction to the Egyptian sponsored fedeyeen raids from the Sinai into Israel attacking civilians. He is too casual in lumping Israel in with Britain and France with respect to motivation. The Russian launching of their Sputnik satellite in 1957 triggered a major crisis in the administration and led to calls of a missile gap. Although there may have been one in 1957, by 1960 the U.S. had clear military superiority over the Russians with the development of the Atlas, Titan, Minuteman and Polaris missiles. The missile gap that JFK talked of in 1960 was a myth.Throughout his administration Eisenhower concentrated his efforts on building up U.S. strategic forces and trying to reach a modus vivendi with the Soviets. He tried with a Summit meeting in 1954 and tried again with the planned summit meeting in 1960. That summit blew up when Eisenhower was caught lying about the failed U-2 over-flight mission over the Soviet Union. Here Hitchcock is particularly acute in going through the “tick-tock” of the entire episode. One of the heroes of the book is Attorney General Herbert Brownell who was leading the charge on civil rights. It is here where Hitchcock differs from Caro in his telling of the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1957. According to Caro Johnson was the prime mover, but according to Hitchcock it is Johnson who so waters down the bill to make it far less relevant. Remember the Senate was voting on the Eisenhower Administration’s bill. It is also here that Hitchcock makes an error in recounting that it took 60% of the Senate to over-ride a filibuster. That is true today, but in 1957 it took 67%.Although many historians are critical of Eisenhower’s slow walking civil rights in the 1950s. Hitchcock rightly notes that Eisenhower used federal troops to integrate Little Rock’s Central High School in 1957 and was vilified throughout the south. Kennedy was no different as he also slow walked civil rights until 1963.Hitchcock notes that Eisenhower leaves Kennedy with crises in Laos and Cuba where a CIA sponsored invasion is on the offing. Unfortunately Kennedy got caught up in the momentum of the moment with disastrous results. But that all takes place prior to Eisenhower’s farewell address where he warns of the power accumulating in the military-industrial complex he largely created. All told William Hitchcock has offered a terrific history of the era and foreign policy of the Eisenhower Administration. I highly recommend it for both lay and professional readers.

Finally, we have a book that does justice to the years that Eisenhower was president. Most books on his presidency handle him as the guy between Truman and Kennedy (who were to these writers obviously more important presidents, but not to me). And, not to this author - he starts the book by referencing a recent poll of 100 historians that ranked Eisenhower as our fifth best president (after Lincoln, Washington, Franklin Roosevelt and Teddy Roosevelt). He then laid out the case, based upon facts, that Eisenhower was in fact that great - both in international and domestic affairs. Truman and Kennedy were reactive presidents whose approaches resulted in the Korean War and the closest that we came to a nuclear war (Cuban Missile Crisis). Eisenhower met with National Security Advisers on an ongoing basis and listened to him, but he made the decision (unlike the unfair criticism heaped on him by his critics). Domestically, the economy hummed as individual wages increased and unemployment was low (in spite of two minor recessions). There are more positive facts, that show that Eisenhower was a great president and deserves these accolades. If you want to learn the truth regarding this great president, the greatest of my lifetime, I recommend reading this book. You won't be disappointed.

A good policy history, one especially strong on foreign relations, for America in the 1950s and very early '60s as influenced or directed by Dwight Eisenhower. While Professor Hitchcock points out several flaws and failures in leadership (such as being weak on the moral issue of institutional racism or the errors in handling the U-2 spy plane crisis), Eisenhower is positively portrayed here as more active, thoughtful, and effective than often credited with at the time or over the decades immediately following his departure from the White House. He made many good calls and ran a fundamentally honest administration.Much happened in the time when Eisenhower was making the big decisions during the Cold War and the decolonization of the Third World; a book such as this helps one appreciate that it was not just TV westerns, lemonade, and baseball immediately prior to the agitated and rebellious 1960s.

Very readable, no confusion, doesn't get lost in dates and names, political opinions or policy commentary. I was surprised how much I didn't know or of which I had too simplified of knowledge. As a teenager this history was ongoing for me so it was not a part of my American history curriculum. I am much clearer on USA domestic and international history because of this book. It is a page turner, informs but doesn't dwell. The age of Eisenhower was not a bland, boring, did-nothing era - not the happy days that is the general description of those years between 1952-1960. Last chapter is interesting about the transition to JFK, from a 70 year old to a 43 year old. This book was not a biography or memoir, it was the historical events, backgrounds, actions, and consequences; at least to me a lot of inside or otherwise not generally disclosed information. After reading this book, you'll change your opinion that Eisenhower spent most of his time on the golf course or playing bridge. I would recommend to any history buff, it is not one-sided nor a propaganda piece. A lot of what occurred or was done/not done would have been more transparent and publicly debated in today's world. After WW2 people wanted peace and calm, but in fact that was not the case behind the scenes of this historical time.

I love Eyewitness Guides and have been using them for years. The only reason I gave it four stars is that the pages are shiny and create a glare that makes it difficult to see under certain lights. Also, there's a lot of information packed in these books so the print is pretty small.

The guide was helpful once I arrived in Malta but less so for planning purposes. I would have liked more practical information like about tipping or that the bus system is great but never in time. The size of the book was perfect. I could always carry it with me.

This is a very nice little book that features the things that you'll want to see the first time around and also provides a couple of nice maps that you can take out and slip into your pocket. It goes into enough detail so that you have some idea what you're looking at, but not so much detail that you end up with a guidebook that makes you list to one side when you carry it in your bag. Everything was accurate and I found it a great help.

I like that it highlights key sights and other destinations from more mundane ones.

This book was easy to use, I referred to the pull out map frequently which was small enough to slip into my purse.

ok but would have been more useful as a combined book with some other nearby islands

My wife and I spent a week in Malta and this book traveled everyplace with us. Easy, quick and indispensable, the only way to see all the important parts of the Country.

OK for browsing, but not really useful for travelling. Many key details of when things are open, and how to get from one place to another in Malta are omitted. Few restaurant reviews.

The City-State of Boston: The Rise and Fall of an Atlantic Power, 1630-1865

Review

"Peterson leads us through [Boston's] Enlightenment ideals and how they clashed with the city's links to the American South's slave-driven economy. A meaty, methodical exploration of a crucial American founding stronghold." (Kirkus)"An immense, fresh history of the 'city upon a hill' conceives of the place as an independent city-state that was absorbed into the new country that arose around it. Boston's current moment--at once privileged and peculiar--suggests the value of considering its distinctive past in light of powerful, imaginative scholarship, in the deft hands of the author, now at Yale." (Harvard Magazine)"Mark Peterson's story of the rise and fall of the city-state of Boston over nearly three centuries is a remarkable achievement. He has told the story in such a rich and extraordinary way that our understanding of Boston's history will never again be the same."--Gordon S. Wood, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and author of Friends Divided: John Adams and Thomas Jefferson"A daring reworking of the narrative of Boston that Americans have come to know and love, The City-State of Boston may discomfit those who cherish the story of Puritans, revolutionaries, and abolitionists as it has been told. But Mark Peterson's rich and meticulously researched account will be indispensable reading for everyone interested in the history of North America."--Annette Gordon-Reed, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family"By examining the long rise and eventual eclipse of Boston as a regional power, Mark Peterson vividly and insightfully reflects on the sources and distortions of American nationalism. In this wide-ranging book, Peterson deftly explores the interplay of global commerce with local identities and historical mythmaking."--Alan Taylor, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and author of American Revolutions: A Continental History, 1750-1804"The City-State of Boston is a book of prodigious erudition, which rests on a vast corpus of knowledge about Boston and its regional, continental, national, and international connections. Peterson writes with great subtlety and empathy about people whose mores and meanings were vastly different from our own. A deep and important study, with tremendous sweep and boundless ambition."--Jane Kamensky, author of Revolution in Color: The World of John Singleton Copley "The City-State of Boston takes an epic and magisterial look at the rise of one of the great cities of British North America and the early United States. I am confident that historians will be talking about this important book's argument for years to come."--Peter C. Mancall, author of Fatal Journey: The Final Expedition of Henry Hudson"Boston was not 'a city upon a hill,' Mark Peterson argues in his important new biography of the city. It was instead a city-state that dominated its New England hinterland for more than two centuries as it made a distinctive place for itself in the Atlantic world. The City-State of Boston is a major contribution to early American studies."--Peter S. Onuf, coauthor of "Most Blessed of the Patriarchs": Thomas Jefferson and the Empire of the Imagination"Mark Peterson's deeply researched, centuries-sweeping The City-State of Boston offers readers a compelling new take on the northern Atlantic port that looms so large in American mythology. This is a biography of Boston from cradle to maturity, and a twenty-first century narrative of decline that, along the way, questions the very value of nationhood."--Wendy Warren, author of New England Bound: Slavery and Colonization in Early America

From the Back Cover

Julius Caesar is a key link between Shakespeare's histories and his tragedies. Unlike the Caesar drawn by Plutarch in a source text, Shakespeare's Caesar is surprisingly modern: vulnerable and imperfect, a powerful man who does not always know himself. The open-ended structure of the play insists that revealing events will continue after the play ends, making the significance of the history we have just witnessed impossible to determine in the play itself. John D. Cox's introduction discusses issues of genre, characterization, and rhetoric, while also providing a detailed history of criticism of the play. Appendices provide excerpts from important related works by Lucretius, Plutarch, and Montaigne.

There are no spaces in the text, and the modern English is not in a column next to the old English. The printed version has the modern English on the page next to the old English. I don't see anyplace where I can "return" the e-book.

If you are just starting to read Shakespeare on your own, and want a good starting point, look no further than this Folger Library treatment of his great political drama. It was the Folger edition of "Julius Caesar" that grabbed me back in the ninth grade, when I was failing all my classes and hardly hitting my assigned reading. This has it all: Indelible characters, hard-hitting action scenes, tricky "what-would-you-do" moments, and text that you can grasp readily thanks to the Folger practice of laying out the tricky parts on the opposite page. Guess what: There aren't so many "tricky parts" in "Julius Caesar" as you might expect from reading "Hamlet" or even "Midsummer Night's Dream."There are many, many great lines, some quite famous and instantly recognizable to anyone with a bit of cultural awareness. "Beware the ides of March!' "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars,/But in ourselves..." "Yond Cassius has a lean and hungry look." "...it was Greek to me." "Cowards die many times before their deaths;/The valiant never taste of death but once..." And that's just in the first two acts. The great speech everyone remembers, the one which begins "Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears," is especially powerful when read in context. It is delivered by the play's most fascinating character, Mark Antony. At this point in the play, the title character is [Big Spoiler Coming] terminally indisposed, and most of the people who have been doing the talking are fine with this. Then Mark Antony comes on stage, and with that line, and the next several that follow, he effects a tremendous turnabout in the storyline, among the most memorable ever devised. It's a riveting, passionate, and snarkishly satirical scene, as the cynical-yet-somehow-admirable Mark Antony winds up a crowd of passive Romans into complete bloodlust. The scenes are sharp like that throughout, something that can't always be said of Shakespeare. He's often ambiguous, but seldom as effectively as here. The dilemma of Brutus, who sees a man whose power is going to his head, is one we can relate to, as we see that side of Caesar, too, but is the prescribed cure better than the sickness, or is Brutus just the wrong physician? We get one unalloyed villain in Cassius, whose very name is snakelike and who seems to operate on Brutus like a proto-Iago, but different readers will come away with different perspectives on his plotting.Probably written in 1599, just as Shakespeare was entering his decade of greatest accomplishment, "Julius Caesar" may be with "Romeo & Juliet" and "MacBeth" the safest bet for a high-school or junior-high-school English teacher. I can't think of an easier play of Shakespeare's to read, or maybe even enjoy. Add to that the levels of deception, subtle characterization, and satirical realpolitik to be discovered, and you have a play that satisfies as much as it draws you in.

How can one describe Shakespeare's plays? They're fabulous and for that reason I purchased this book for my sophomores who struggle with the wording. This will be a big help as they read the play. I had to laugh. Shakespeare has never written a "Predictable" play. Yes, there are omens that foreshadow what is to come but the reader never knows how or when it will happen. This is a very helpful book that transcribes Shakespeare's play in modern language.

I have a pretty typical son except that he is homeschooled. Sourcebooks' Macbeth left my son with a deep understanding of Shakespeare and his style of writing; so much so that he asked for another for Christmas - and yes - now he is enjoying "Julius Ceasar" for his own sake! If you or your child has to read a Shakespeare book for whatever reason, make sure you either use or have for reference the Sourcebooks version - they explain words and phrases in terms of their meaning at the time - sentence by sentence. The CD-Rom, which comes with it, allows you to hear sections you may be struggling with as they were performed in famous Shakespeare productions. Also, just FYI, out of several Macbeth movies, we very much liked the BBC version: extremely well performed, with beautiful Scottish settings and realistic costumes (we rented through Netflix).

I absolutely love the recording! It matches perfectly the text I use in my classroom and adds so much to instruction! The students enjoy the natural sounding voices because they don't sound as if they are JUST reading. I highly recommend this product.

This is an easy to read edition of the text in a great Kindle version. There isn't much in the way of secondary material--just a well-rendered text. A tremendous bargain at the price!

I like Shakespeare, but find his language hard to decipher at times. Standard texts have footnotes to help you to understand how he uses certain words, but after looking up a few dozen of these, I find myself starting to lose the thread of the story line. The "Shakespeare Made Easy" approach has been a godsend for me. Now, whenever I run into a difficult passage, I can glance over to the other side of the book and read the same passage in plain English. A light bulb blinks on, and I say, "Aha! That's what this means!" Unfamiliar words are instantly translated for me as I see them in the context of a passage which I now understand fully. I've read Julius Caesar three or four times previously, but never so fluidly and with such enjoyment and understanding as I just did with the help of the "Shakespeare Made Easy" book.

I purchased this with the other titles ("Hamlet," "Macbeth," and "Romeo & Juliet" to help my remedial English students (which included a bunch of ESLL students) to understand Shakespeare. I liked that the actual text was included with the manga style; however, some scenes are not included, and a cast of characters would've been nice to have, especially for students who are unfamiliar with the play in the first place. Overall, I'm satisfied with my purchase. Oh, and my students all left remedial English with a clear understanding of Shakespeare's tragedies. :)
