This book is a great read--almost a page turner--about Tim Flannery's adventures as a biologist looking for new species and documenting others in New Guinea. He is an excellent writer and has made his subject exciting and accessible for most readers. Few of us could have endured the difficulties Flannery put himself through but I found them wonderful to experience vicariously.

TIM FLANNERY IS THE WORLDS GREATEST EXPLORERED AND A POET ON WRITING...A FANTASIC BOOK ABOUT HIS EXPLORATOINS IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA AND MELANEISA

Amusing and fascinating.

A great book. Flannery visited very remote areas in New Guinea in the 1980's and 1990's, and yet he finds cultures only beginning to change from the days of tribal wars and cannibals. He has a great sense of humor. Well worth a read to get a sense of a disappearing New Guinea culture.

I had never heard of this book, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is about a biologists experiences over years in New Guinea. The animals were interesting, but the stars of the show were the people. Flannery has the ability to see beyond the obvious in people and recognize intelligence, kindness, leadership where they exist not where you expect them to exist. It is also a good primer to today's New Guinea, it's culture, geography, and politics.

Love it. Extremely well written and exposes us to remote areas not commonly visited.I also bought the hard copy for my collection!!

Virginia Bell has lectured widely on Alzheimer's disease at national and international conferences, speaking at 12 National Education Conferences of the Alzheimer's Association and lecturing at 18 conferences of Alzheimer's Disease International. Sheâ??s published journal articles and books, notably in Dementia Care: Patient, Family and Community (John Hopkins, 1989). Many of her articles have been reprinted numerous times: "The Alzheimer's Disease Bill of Rights" (1994), "The other Face of Alzheimer's Disease" (1999) and "Spirituality and the Person with Dementia" (2001), co-authored with David Troxel and published in the American Journal of Alzheimer's Disease and in the Alzheimer's Care Quarterly. Great reference book. I've been an activities coordinator with folks with Alzheimer's and other dementia. And not having much time for preparation this is such a handy book with the different ways it's categorized. And many of the activities I can do with what I have on hand and the folks love it. It's also a great spring board for ideas.

This book has great ideas for not only group activites but also ind activities. The ideas ae also not expensive.

overall, an excellent gastroenterology book.........however,too much biochemistry, for me......the treatments went in to too much detail, like in the hepatitis section, which I found overwhelming for a primary care doc; seemed to be perfect, however, for a gastroenterologist.....highly recommend the book.....should be enjoyed by the primary care doc.......ken Humphrey, md, abem, abfp.......

I bought this book to help me teach an Animation class for 9-12 year-olds, which I was unfamiliar with. (I had only experience with stop motion.) What I liked most about this book (and I didn't get a chance to read the whole book) was that in the first chapter, White explains all of the materials he uses and why, and debates/preferences about some materials. He even tells the reader what stores to find certain materials at, and links to online businesses. I felt the book on the whole was helpful, but this--for me--is what separated it from The Animator's Survival Kit (also a good book).

The book is the last of a trilogy, of sorts. Of course, you don't really need to get to the first two, but White recommends that you do. He comes across as very knowledgeable in the field, giving you tips and tricks to maneuver around seemingly small things (like how you flip through your pencil test), getting the minutiae out of the way for you to focus on the more important aspects of animation.I only have two problems with the book so far. One is that the writing comes across as very slow. I think the book could have moved through the lessons much faster without so many descriptions of the artistic process. Instead, and I think this is reasonable, given that many of us artistically inclined folk are visual learners, White could have included more pictures and diagrams for the reader to follow. The second problem, and perhaps he addresses it in his previous books- I haven't even been all that thorough with this one- is that White doesn't address the technological issue: what programs are best for putting the animation together and how to set up a capture station (you know, scanning your drawings, photographing them...).The book is purely a guide that takes you through the stages of understanding the form and flow of movement in animation. It's incredibly helpful in forming you as an animator, but you may have to seek out other details elsewhere.

I've studied animation techniques from Tony White's two previous books, but this one is the best one yet from this master animator from England. He provides an "over the shoulder" view of animation techniques, and lets you look over his shoulder on how in-betweens are done, how generic walks are created, and so on, as if you are a journeyman learning from the master. He starts off with a 10 part foundation course, with exercises for each section, and moves the journeyman animator into more and more complex animation techniques. I've got a long way go to myself in terms of my animation skills but Tony White sure has helped me along. The accompanying DVD is also very good as you get to literally watch him draw in-betweens in traditional 2D animation style, with pencil and paper! Tony also provides some lecture material on doing walks, both generic walks and walks with personality. His teaching style seems so patient and nurturing, it must be wonderful to takes courses directly from him. This book provides the next best thing!

This book has some good basic info on hand drawn animation techniques. It is a well thought out course that also acknowledges that most animators will be transfering their work to a computer animation program. Unfortunately, with the exception of the last two chapters it does not devote much time to flowing from paper to the computer. For instance, his drawing of a bouncing rubber ball would likely be done using a combination of drawings (to capture the deformity of the ball as it squishes) and computer tweening (to draw the frames in which ball was the same shape). Until the last two chapters in the book he doesn't really include specific computer techniques in the workflow. There seems to be a large gap between books like this one that teach the basic principles and those that address the abilities of the programs themselves.

Great instructional work, attending classes and this was a must buy for my personal animation library.

Great book takes you step by step into producing an animation film. Plus has cd include which makes it so much better you can actually watch what they are teaching you step by step.

Very informative great read answered questions about the animation process and hard work that entails. I would recommend this book for beginners.

I love the Focal Press animation series of books. I haven't been disappointed with any of them. Not only is this a good book for a student, it's also a good book to be implemented in the classroom. At the end of each demo there is an assignment. The dvd is also a great bonus for those who learn better by watching. A great addition to my animation library. Highly recommended.

About the Author

Brenda Griffith began kiln forming glass in the mid 1980's in Missoula Montana. In 1987 she moved to Chicago, Illinois, and launched Siyeh Studio--christened for her favorite area in Glacier Park, Montana. Griffith's work is an eclectic mix of functional glass vessels and collaborative glass and aluminum and glass and steel art. She is a two-time NICHE Award finalist in the category Fused Glass. In addition to producing Siyeh Studio glass, Griffith writes, teaches, and mentors. She is the author of "A Beginner's Guide to Kiln Formed Glass" and "Kiln-Formed Glass: Beyond the Basics", and she has been a contributing writer for Glass Patterns Quarterly, and Profitable Glass magazines.  Griffith lives in Atlanta with her husband, daughter, mother, three dogs, three rabbits, 12 chickens, four fish, and a bird.

In this case, you CAN judge a book by its cover--A Beginner's Guide to Kilnformed Glass is a well-illustrated journey through the first year of serious kilnforming. Well-written and thoughtfully organized, it provides clear explanations of the tools, equipment, studio and materials you'll need to get started "fusing" glass. It moves through explaining basic techniques like glasscutting, layup (assembling glass or frit so that it will fuse into your design), firing and coldworking (shaping and polishing the fired piece). Don't be tempted to skip these chapters; I've been working glass for 15 years but even so, I found a few new ideas I could use in the studio. The author is a teacher, production glassmaker and artist who obviously knows her stuff (disclaimer: I've met her at several glassmaking functions so I knew she was good BEFORE I got the book).And then the fun starts. Where many books offer simple beginner's projects that LOOK like simple beginner's projects, the projects in this book produce sophisticated and often beautiful pieces of glass. The techniques required are relatively easy to master even if you don't have much experience with glass, and there's a point to them, i.e., one project helps you understand precision cutting, another what happens when you overfire thin glass, and yet another introduces making components for larger assemblies. There are the usual drapes, plates and potmelts too, but they're well-presented. The author includes templates for each project, but clearly encourages you to use them as a starting point for your own designs. (I'm making a note to myself to try that three-tiered water fountain; it looks cool)I do have a minor, minor quibble: This book is a good in-studio reference, especially while you're working on a project, but it's hard-bound and the pages have trouble staying flat; if there's a second printing a spiral-bound might be useful.

I read the reviews others had written before I bought this book, and I completely agree with the writers of the 4 and 5 star scores. It is so well written, and every question I had was answered in a very straight forward way. I feel like I have every bit of knowledge I need offered to me in these pages, and the pics are very professionally done. I am just a very happy camper. Would highly recommend this book to anyone working with or thinking about working with glass.

Very useful, as a beginner I found the explanation of the basics good and the projects interesting.

Purchased the book a couple of years ago for my wife. It is very informative with good guidance and some neat projects. It helped my wife and myself understand the whole process of using our kiln successfully. A definite read for anyone getting started or expanding their knowledge of kiln formed glass.

Having done stained glass for years, wanted to try my hand at fused glass. Living in a very rural area makes it difficult (impossible in my case) to access good classroom lessons so must self-teach. Bought the book on recommendation from a fellow fuser and am thrilled. The clearly written instructions provided in logical sequence makes it easy for the newbie to learn the basics. But it doesn't stop there. Brenda takes you to the next level with the same clear, concise approach which makes this book a real gem. She doesn't waste words/time with frivolous verbiage yet maintains a very conversational, friendly tone. Provides plenty of how-to photos not to mention photos of her gorgeous creations which serve not only as eye candy but great inspiration. The projects are varied and go far beyond other "beginner" projects found in similar books yet not so difficult as to scare you off from trying. Worth every penny and a must-have for the fusing enthusiast.

This book was everything I expected and more. A great book for any level of glass artist. It is full of tecniques, pictures and a ton of very useful tips and information. I loved this book. It introduced me to many new techniques and products I never heard of before. I have been doing glass fusion for about 2 1/2 years and purchased my own kiln this spring. This book will be a great asset in my fusion library. Great value at such a great price.

I am really enjoying this book, it's a good reference as well as good advice. If you're like me, you'll need more that this book to start out. I'm finding that watching videos and reading articles has also added to my knowledge base.

First off let me say, I've had this awhile, so I've had time to thoroughly read it, use it and enjoy it. I first had Mr. Hervey Garrett-Smith's other book the Marlinspike Sailor which is larger but thinner and has some similar things, and some different things, so it really it a good idea to get both. I wrote a review on the Marlinspike Sailor and then realized I had not told about my experience with this one (though I doubt I can outdo some of the highest rated reviews.)Well this book, though chock full of great illustrations, has a lot of text too. Whereas Marlinspike Sailor is more like individual specific projects, this book is like that but in overall context sometimes and he will put in where he thinks something fits. It is a good read and very insightful. Whimsical yet practical writing, a great and interesting mix that works, because sailing and marlinspike craft are pratical and fun.Before long you'll be searching for projects to tie knots on, and doing the sailors' crafts from the book, collecting the tools outlined in the first part, if you don't have them yet. Since reading his books I have gotten piecemeal a lot. I started with practical knots, then decorative, then more marlinspike focused craft. Before long I had sail needles (type he mentions in book which are excellent), canvas, a left-handed sewing palm, and I've made several ditty bags out of the books to hold the supplies or give away to family and friends. I've made rope ladders, swings, hammocks, nets, rope boat fenders. The things you can make from rope are amazing and you'll find very entertaining if you are at all into it.This one has a lot more stuff specific to sailing like reefing sails, towing boats, and some that apply to sailing and life on land, but there is no shortage of things that are not usual if you do not own a sailboat of yore. From sennits to coachwhipping and various braids and chains, to proper knots and their uses, and the rich descriptions and illustrations, this book is always worth it.I'm preparing and learning from books all the time like this what I don't have access to regularly which is a seasoned mariner, but he did and was and can pass it on to you through this book. It's about like having one in your back pocket--Or ditty bag!

Nice book, has a lot of history and practical information. If you only want to know how to tie the knots look somewhere else because this guy is a total purist we are talking someone who would put serious effort into whipping the end of a rope, which lets face it most of us dont do that. Great read.

The descriptions are perhaps not as detailed as we have come to expect in the modern era, but still very good considering the era in which it was written. I haven't gone very deeply into it, but already it has helped me remember some knots that I used to know how to tie, and also corrected me on another knot that I thought I knew how to tie. Given the difficulty sometimes of understanding a drawing or picture of a knot well enough to actually tie it in real life, one should have as many of these types of guides as possible.

This is another excellent piece by the late Hervey Garrett Smith. It's sort of a companion to "The Marlinspike Sailor" (ibid), though it is somewhat more expansive on many fundamental topics like knots, bends, whippings and seizings. There is a good bit of overlap between the two books, although this one is both more comprehensive and a smaller physical book (for your small onboard library...) "The Marlinspike Sailor" is more project oriented - and has excellent plans and diagrams for practical onboard ropework and sewing projects - while this book is focussed on the elements that go into such projects (without the actual examples). It's very traditional - as with all of Smith's period writing - with little or no reference to modern materials, but it's a posthumous reprint, so don't expect much updating... but the style is both informative and interesting without being dry or obtuse. "The Marlinspike Sailor" might actually be a better starting point for a true beginner (and it does contain a short update to 'modern' braided rope in the back), but I have them both and don't regret it.

This book has proven to be one of the most useful of the many,many I have used. Simple,straightforwardOne of those books I am glad I found in my youth.

Fun book, not a great teaching aid for how to tie knots unless you can figure it out by a few pictures. Not same exact book pictured. Title on actual book delivered is in red ink. Missing some important knot techniques (such as buoy knot for crab traps). Still a good read.

This is a really fun read, fantastic illustrations, and entertaining writing. It's a fun snapshot in time of ancient mariners, seen through the eyes of a man (Smith) who presumably sailed 1900-1950ish... he wrote this as an older guy, so he goes back a ways. Anyway, it's conversational in style, a quick read or reference - tons of amusing nuggets.

This book is a very good introduction to sailing knots and rope work. If you're looking for a book on decorative knot working this is not the book you want. Though it's filled with lots of useful knots and techniques it's really geared toward rigging and sail work be it on a one man sailing skif or a massive sailing ship from centuries ago I think the information contained here in would at worst give you a solid base to learn from.
