I really wanted to like this book but it had a few core problems for me as a reader.1. The premise of the entire book is based on a mildly interesting insight that gets expanded to book length. It's as if the author felt he stumbled upon a revolutionary idea that stood to change everything about the way people discuss god, which could all change if only people could just bet people to see his point. The basic premise is that people mean (at least) two separate and distinct things when talking about the existence of god. The author asserts there are really two definitions out there: God and "god". With respect to God - Lindsay treats this as a theological/mythological proposition regarding an actual entity. Interestingly enough Lindsay is comfortable saying this version of God does not exist. But then there's "god" - which Lindsay treats as a psychological catchall denoting certain social/cultural values and/or psychological needs of the speaker. Here Lindsay says "god" demonstrably exists...and why not....if all that is meant is a subjective report on a person's internal psychology.According to the author it's the failure to distinguish between those two things that leads atheists to misunderstand and therefore mishandle the typical god conversation. (While failing to note the theists responsibility in this area too.)My main problem with this argument is that it's clever as far as it goes but ultimately ends up being of little value or utility. In my experience theists almost always use the term in both ways simultaneously and inter-dependently and will defend both meanings as if they were one inseparable or one and the same. Thus it is not sufficient to say it's incumbent upon the atheist to understand how the other speaker is using the term. The tricky part is bringing the theist to acceptance of the the basic distinction/dichotomy as well....which is to say that in order to get out of the typical points and counterpoints of theistic debate.....the theist TOO must come to the realization that while "god" may exist......God almost certainly does not. Good luck with that......Structurally I also found the book to be a bit frustrating. It felt as if the author spent half the book telling me what he was going to tell me. It left me feeling like the first half of the book was merely an extension of the foreword and could have been discarded in favor of simply getting to the point. Organize your argument and present it.....stop wasting space and time telling me how brilliant your point is going to be when you eventually come round to it...and just get on with it. This is particularly frustrating when the ultimate point that really isn't all that brilliant, ground breaking, or revolutionary, once you come to it!! Meanwhile, the actual points made were rather redundant and repetitive with the author expounding on the same point in multiple ways without necessarily illuminating things any better.Lastly, I also found the book to be rather short of practical advice for how one might go about changing the nature, tone, or course of the theist/atheist conversation. It was if the author believed that if only atheists could understand and accept the God/"god" distinction then entire format of the age old conversation would change of it's own accord....forgetting of course that theists must also be brought round to this new POV as well.All in all a mildly interesting point of little utility that was stretched WAY too thin by pulling it to book length.

This book gives a whole new twist to the problem of religion in society. That people use the concept of God as a source of passive control over an uncertain and dangerous world- that Americans will prosper and never have calamity it cannot handle. People give trust to this abstract notion of God to take care of circumstances. They have no idea how this abstract God would accomplish such a feat. The circumstances are too complex or mysterious- like people don't understand the power and mystery of the Sea so they created Poseidan, the Sea God. People attribute Natural events to God and assume there is some force out there, looking after people. People assume there is some jealous force in nature somewhere up in the hills or the sky looking after us. This goes back into thousands of years of mythological assumptions that there must be some force out in nature which can help or hurt us. We assume this force created everything that is. We just have to appeal to the Good side of this force and we will be OK. We don't have time to read a 300 page physics book about the origen of the Universe. Our ancient mythology book tells us us with great authority that the controller of all things, God, actually made the Universe. We don't have any idea how ancient stone age people could figure this out but we're not going to throw out a big old myth that just "has" to be true. In Sweden people's needs are met by the Government so they reduce their reliance on God. Instead of puffing up the notion of God and trying to prove or disprove the existence of God we should be working together to solve our own problems and give up the notion of God. We should help each other solve problems by national means, not mythological means.

I’m here to be supportive of Mr. Lindsay, who was (I think) the lead author of the infamous Portland dog park rape culture paper. Anyone who can write and (almost) get away with that stuff is OK by me. I’ve read the first chapter and skimmed the rest of the book. Is Mr. Lindsay just now catching up with James George Frazier’s The Golden Bough, William James’ The Varieties of Religious Experience, or even Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra? I get the impression he thinks he has nailed the very last nail in the theistic coffin, but theism has survived tougher challenges by more knowledgeable people and persisted. I suspect it will do so after this book. Just don’t tell Mr. Lindsay. It will shake his faith. And if he reads this review: I love you dude!

A fantastic extension of the topic of why people believe. This book calls nonbelievers to become non-theists and rise to the occasion and needs of those who are psychologically still wedded to a beliefs/a belief community. While I am still looking for more on the physiological needs of faith/faith communities I think this book sets up the proper foundation. While politically I find Atheism and Firebrand Atheism relevant and useful political term/communities, this book moves toward more effective ways of communicating about belief. Lindsay gives a place to the fact that lots of intelligent people believe...because they psychologically need to. Taking this seriously should allow interested (post)atheists to focus on more meaningful tactics/strategies in the culture war, and ideally step away from arrogance of our own superior rationalities and the many fold efforts to build quasi religious groups by demonizing out groups.

Ron Stob was a travel writer and photographer for the San Luis Obispo County (California) Telegram-Tribune from 1984 through 1998, taking readers on hikes, river-rafting excursions and motor trips along the back roads in search of the obscure and unusual. He has written books on travel from Santa Barbara to Big Sur — Back Roads of the Central Coast, More Back Roads of the Central Coast and Exploring San Luis Obispo and Nearby Coastal Areas. I bought this book hoping for it to be a good read for my wife. My idea was to get a good non-technical view of the Great Loop experience and how wonderful it might be to do ourselves in several years. I wanted to read it first, and I'm sure glad I did. I can't see how anyone would find this book anything other than depressing. It starts with some pretty major, and unexpected, repairs being required shortly after purchasing the boat. I was fine with that, a little reality check regarding possible unplanned and expensive maintenance for any boat. Unfortunately, it really doesn't get better as it goes on. There is good information to be found, but every chapter is somewhat gloomy. The author doesn't seem to have even enjoyed the trip. The closing paragraphs of the book aren't even upbeat. A couple times through the book he breaks the gloom suddenly and declares that he wants to live in whatever location they are in, but that is right after describing the travel legs as pretty much miserable. I could go on agreeing with other reviews about the religious overtones and condescending racial attitudes, but you can read that yourselves.Amazingly, this book actually diminished my supernova like fire of a desire to do this trip. I think I'll recover, but I'd be glad to have never picked this up in the first place. Even more amazingly, I've discovered that this book was actually written by the same people who created the AGLCA. So somehow they did this trip, immediately sold their boat, wrote a book that made it sound pretty mediocre or even unpleasant, and then went on to found an association that celebrates that very same trip.

I bought and read the original in 1999 and must admit, it did give me the fever and I love that about the book. I have been on a 15 year quest to get ready to do the loop and have been reading, researching, and googling everything I can about it. I bought this as it stated it was revised in 2010. I saw very little change between the years and in fact, was disappointed that much of the material is well outdated, including cost figures and even Marina's that are now closed.The cover indicates there is a guidebook included - did I miss something? I'm still looking for itIt reads a lot like someone's travel log but there are some references they make to certain places that are noteworthy to be referenced in my future cruising guides.I think the author's attempt of humor is sometimes futile and they should have left their political and personnel opinions on the chart table. They were somewhat negative toward the end and in fact sounded like they couldn't wait for it to be over - not at all inspiring. In fact, sold their boat when the loop was completed.If you are interested in doing the loop it is a decent source to wet your appetite but as far as buying and outfitting you first boat, I highly recommend "Living Aboard A Boat" written by Mark Nicholas as a very good place to start.

My husband is very interested in cruising The Great Loop so we both read this iconic book to see what to expect. The book is interesting and recounts the Stob's year long odyssey describing ports and towns visited, problems encountered along the way, scary moments and fun times. The appendix is filled with tons of pertinent information such as planning your itinerary, recommended guidebooks, where to take boater education classes, budgets, choosing and outfitting a boat, etc. We are still researching whether we will attempt the loop, but this is the perfect first book to read on the subject of looping.

Cute book! My husband, two sons, our cat, and I circumnavigated the Caribbean several years ago. Now my husband and I are thinking about the Great Loop. Our initial experiences with a large sailboat were very much like the experiences of this couple on their new power boat. Their trials brought back memories and made us laugh at the similarities! It looks like they have settled near my birthplace, so even more in common now. Loved the book!

Boring book written by a racist and prejudiced person. Clearly an effort to finance his trip.

A little flowery in the writing and not enough writing on the Tenn-Tom and Gulf Coast but overall a good book. This one actually convinced us not to do the entire loop but concentrate on the East coast and then head for the Caribbean.

The title might set the wrong tone as this book is a colorfully written actual account of this ambitious trip taken by a husband-wife crew on a 40 foot trawler capable of 9 knots. It was their first big boat but they were a quick study and courageous. Bonus is an entire section summarizing all the resources they used to prepare for the trip with contact information and recommendations. He is a travel writer so you get a lot of the local flavor and history as they cruise.

This book is great, it covers so many details I felt almost overwhelmed. If you are just starting in project management (like myself) I recommend a simpler book like "Project Management for the Unofficial Project Manager", then you can tackle this one with more confidence.This is a book that you should sip slowly, memorizing the important points and you should probably read it two or three times then use it as a reference. Then you can jump to the PMBOK itself and dive into books that are written for specific project topics or areas (project integration, scope, schedule, quality, resource, risk, procurement, estimation, stakeholder, communication etc).Despite being a great book and one that I would recommend, I've found at least 3 shortcommings:1) There are no real world examples in the book to help the reader bridge the gap between theory and practice.I think this is the major shortcomming.2) Every chapter ends with a helpful summary in a diagram form but the font size is so small that is difficult to read the several items without getting a sore sight. Maybe Im getting old...3) There is no bibliography

I've found this book to address all the basic principles of project management in a logical order, without being too technical. It has a nice flow, isn't too short or too long, and all of the little "tips" and "notes" I have found to be accurate in the real world of project management - even in the Entertainment industry in which I work.

It's an easy to follow along with book for a first time user. I recommend getting this book even if you're not employed in a position as a Project Manager. You can be a housewife, mother, entrepreneur and more. You're still in the role of a Project Manager in those areas of your life.

I was disappointed with the book. It goes into great detail of the difficulties and expense of "moderating" the content of the millions of comments submitted; mostly related to obscenity, nudity, and hate mail. There are no social implications here; these are strictly business considerations, to keep as many clicks coming in to satisfy the advertisers. To me, the more important consideration would have been the political comments and proliferation of fake news

I highly encourage anyone that’s interested in the inter workings of the internet to look into this book.

I was involved with content moderation at numerous early internet companies - Blogger, Flickr, LiveJournal. A justice might have once said that identifying pornography is easy because "you know it when you see it," but content moderation actually involves an infinite number of shades of gray. This book is a great read--almost a page turner--about Tim Flannery's adventures as a biologist looking for new species and documenting others in New Guinea. He is an excellent writer and has made his subject exciting and accessible for most readers. Few of us could have endured the difficulties Flannery put himself through but I found them wonderful to experience vicariously.

Amusing and fascinating.

A great book. Flannery visited very remote areas in New Guinea in the 1980's and 1990's, and yet he finds cultures only beginning to change from the days of tribal wars and cannibals. He has a great sense of humor. Well worth a read to get a sense of a disappearing New Guinea culture.

I had never heard of this book, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is about a biologists experiences over years in New Guinea. The animals were interesting, but the stars of the show were the people. Flannery has the ability to see beyond the obvious in people and recognize intelligence, kindness, leadership where they exist not where you expect them to exist. It is also a good primer to today's New Guinea, it's culture, geography, and politics.

Love it. Extremely well written and exposes us to remote areas not commonly visited.I also bought the hard copy for my collection!!

Virginia Bell has lectured widely on Alzheimer's disease at national and international conferences, speaking at 12 National Education Conferences of the Alzheimer's Association and lecturing at 18 conferences of Alzheimer's Disease International. Sheâ??s published journal articles and books, notably in Dementia Care: Patient, Family and Community (John Hopkins, 1989). Many of her articles have been reprinted numerous times: "The Alzheimer's Disease Bill of Rights" (1994), "The other Face of Alzheimer's Disease" (1999) and "Spirituality and the Person with Dementia" (2001), co-authored with David Troxel and published in the American Journal of Alzheimer's Disease and in the Alzheimer's Care Quarterly. She has also co-authored five books with David Troxel. Virginia is currently the Program Consultant for the Greater Kentucky and Southern Indiana Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.

Great reference book. I've been an activities coordinator with folks with Alzheimer's and other dementia. And not having much time for preparation this is such a handy book with the different ways it's categorized. And many of the activities I can do with what I have on hand and the folks love it. It's also a great spring board for ideas.

This book has great ideas for not only group activites but also ind activities. The ideas ae also not expensive.
