This is the memoir of an Australian naturalist who, twenty years ago, made the effort to find and study mammals on remote Pacific islands before they became extinct. If he could discover them, then they could be protected. The man has a sense of humor - - -and he needed it to deal with the native peoples who still live traditional lives among the coconut trees... . but he also had to deal with environmental disruption and exploitation of the forests, which made the finding of obscure species almost impossible. He also had a brush with a cannibal culture of not too long ago - - in Fiji. Not for the squeamish to read the account of a missionary of 100 years ago. This is a lively read.....Australians are almost always entertaining.

The description and the two reviews I've read say it all very well. How neat to be able to visit these remote islands--without the inconvenience of travel, bugs, snakes, diseases and enervating tropical heat! The movie "PT-109" showed these beautiful places and the gorgeous pacific. And a long time ago I read a book by Charis Crockett, an anthropologist in New Guinea, called "The House in the Rain Forest". She typed much of her book with a tree kangaroo on her shoulder. Fascinating places with an amazing variety of flora and fauna. I highly recommend both books.My only complaint is the shortage of photos! How I'd love to see the coral and colorful fish, the birds, more flowers, and views of the rain forests! The native people are interesting, the bats and rats are cute (I suspect that it would take a zoologist to call them beautiful as he does) and I'm glad he included the pictures. But five or ten times that many would have made a really superior book. I bought this thru Amazon.

Flannery, an Australian naturalist, is a great writer, his classic being "Throwim Way Leg." If this book doesn't measure up, it's because of its limited scope - not a review of the Pacific Islands, as the title suggests, but a limited area (New Guinea/Solomon Islands) visited by the writer many years ago to collect specimens. The reader would have to, first, understand how naturalists can get thrilled over things may people wouldn't, such as subtle gradations in birds' wings. I suspect you wouldn't be reading this review if you didn't have some idea. But don't expect a wacky travelogue like you might get from Redmond O'Hanlon, or the dyspeptic musings of Paul Theroux, just an informative if occasionally lighthearted account of a remote corner of the world.

I have a number of Flannery's books in my collection and generally consider him one of the best environmental writers. This book, mostly reminiscences of his early explorations, is a very enjoyable read but not as challenging as some of his others. Read this if you want to know more about his scientific background and share some good stories. It won't give you many insights into his current work.

I very good read. I like history and exploration of remote areas, so it is right up my alley. A little funny, along with good info. Recommend!

Tim Flannery is among the last of the great naturalists/scientists/explorers. This quite readable book tells of his exploration of islands in the Pacific for new and/or rare mammals. I have to confess the are more mammal species on these islands than I had known before.

A wonderful book which gives so many charming anecdotes and so much fascinating historical information that I plan to reread it very soon.

A once in a lifetime look at the hunt and identification of endangered animals that live in remote islands in the pacific islands. A ripper of a read.

This is a sweet inspirational book.Adam is a young man who has descended into alcoholism after the loss of his brother. He has abandoned his ideals and gets through the days by drinking, drinking, and more drinking, with the occasional meal and disappointed lecture from his mother thrown in.Benita is a workaholic with no sense of work-life balance. She is up for a major promotion and doesn't have time for personal entanglements.Adam and Benita run into each other a couple of times and for Adam, that's all he needs to break free of the destructive cycle he has found himself in. Benita isn't looking for a romance, just a tutor to give her the edge for the promotion she has been working so hard for.Overall, I liked this book. This is the author's first foray into fiction and the inexperience shows a bit. Sometimes the dialogue was clunky and the plot was a little contrived and naive. Adam's character is a bit controlling, which I don't like at all, but it isn't enough to be jarring.The story was adorable, however, and tackled some heavier issues fairly delicately.All in all, this was a pleasant read. I am looking forward to seeing this author develop her skills.

I enjoyed The Promotion. Adam, struggling to stay sober after the death of his brother, decides to take steps to better himself and stop punishing himself for living. Meanwhile, Benita is a workaholic, trying hard to prove herself worthy of her dream promotion - to Spain. She's placed into a position of competing for the promotion against a male co-worker who delights in trying to one-up her. When Adam and Benita's paths cross, he helps her to learn Spanish. They both grow in personal, professional, and spiritual ways throughout the story. I enjoyed reading about a very strong, successful female lead. This was a simple, but enjoyable read. Looking forward to more books in the future by this new author.

I love this story! This is the first time I have delved into the romance genre, and I'm glad I chose Christian romance because it is free of the grimy, oversexed nonsense that is so often seen. Benita and Adam bring out the best in each other. Benita is a spunky, hard-working professional who has always been centered on her job. Grief-stricken Adam is so drawn within himself that his world has become very small. But will a chance meeting at the local coffee shop change both their lives? Sparks and good works fly as Benita and Adam step into each other's worlds in this heartwarming tale!

If you’re looking for a clean, romantic and enjoyable read... then you will enjoy The Promotion. Ms. Domino has delivered a well developed story with relatable characters. But it wouldn’t be a great story without a few twists and turns.So pick up The Promotion and enjoy. You won’t be disappointed.

I really wanted to enjoy this book...I tried. But the lead character Adam is so shallow...He seems to operate as a 9 year old with poor decision-making skills. I had to stop reading when he acted out because Benita arrived late to their meeting and first, he wants to punch a pillow on her couch, then follows up with “I want to be your friend.” Really? I am looking for adult characters ...they can be flawed but I need to not cringe at them, which I did on most pages where Adam appeared. This one will be removed from my reading list.

The Promotion is a very relaxing romance book where I didn't have to worry about language, violence or graphic sex. I liked getting to know the characters, Benita and Adam, and witnessing their relationship develop. It is also a feel-good book. You just feel good after you read it. :)

I was drawn into The Promotion right from the beginning. The story develops with interesting twists and turns that keep you turning the pages with anticipation.It is great to read a Christian romance which is real and not churchy. This book shows how a person of faith is simply this human with issues that they have to face and deal with. I like how growth is factored into the story allowing the reader to experience watching the main characters evolve in different areas of their lives, professional, spiritual etc. Easy, smooth and delightful read!

Laura Domino's The Promotion is a breath of fresh air for the romance genre. It is clean, sweet, and has characters that are strong on their own, but better together. Adam and Benita have a slow, sweet relationship that isn't rushed as many books portray, but their love unfolds beautifully. I loved this. I think it's a must have for any D&D player that also loves Rick and Morty. I also think it would be great for Rick and Morty fans that want to start playing D&D, but aren't sure where to begin. It breaks down the rules in an easy to understand way while using the Rick and Morty humor that we all know and love.

I very much enjoy both Rick and Morty and D&D, and this comic hits a lot of the right buttons. The art is great. Having all the alternate covers (which this 4 part comic has a ton of alternates) and character stat sheets included is greatly appreciated. My only issue is some characterization of Rick that doesn't feel very true to his character, but even that doesn't feel like enough to knock off a star. Would definitely continue reading if they ever decided to continue with this crossover.

Being a "mini series", I wasn't expecting too much, but I really liked this. I *do* like RPG and the D&D genre, so that helps. If you're not into that, this is should still be a solid 4-star series for you. If you like D&D, you'll likely agree with me on the 5-star rating I gave it.

Wonderful story, true to the R&M 'verse. Artwork is good, and the characters are awesome, as always. Would highly recommend.

Patrick Rothfuss said he was going to break our hearts... He did. I sobbed for happiness and sadness throughout the series. It is very well done!

This book isn’t just for lovers of Rick and Morty (or D&D), though it’s definitely for those people. It also appeals to the masses, to comic readers of all classes and levels. Such a fun read. Zub and Rothfuss are a great team.

I preordered this months before its release and was not disappointed. My only complaint is that I finished reading it in 30 min... I'll reread it though and sketch frames from it. I really liked the end story and loved what they did with Jerry. No spoilers here :D

Out of a group of stories I usually find a couple that I enjoy.None of the stories (and one poem) in this book are terrible. I had read quite a few before. I enjoyed Joe Hill's contribution a lot. I bought the book because it was edited by (and had stories contributed by Stephen King and Bev Vincent) and, because of that, I expected more.I think Stephen King is a master of writing short stories and if a book comes out with just his work in it I'll always buy it (e.g. Different Seasons and Night Shift).Another writer (new to me) that I discovered fairly recently is Richard Chizmar and his short story collection A LONG DECEMBER is one of the best I've ever read.So - if you want everything Stephen King has ever written, you might buy this book. But to me it's a middle of the road collection and none of the stories were scary enough to even make me pause in flying again.

I'm a long time King fan, and i thought that some of Joe Hill's early work was promising. But he is now so consumed with hatred and intolerant rage that his current work is really hard to read. His story in this anthology is so bad, that it kind of ruined the bok for me. Joe, please go outside and scream at the sky.

Welcome Aboard....or maybe not. It all begins with a scary as hell intro by KING. Yikes! What a horrific flying experience he had!As for me, back in the olden days of 1969 on the way to Japan, we briefly stopped in Alaska and slid off the runway all the way to the fence. May not sound it, but it was indeed frightening (don't remember any warnings). And, once on a flight from Los Angeles to Detroit...also in the late 60's....I experienced flying in a horrendous thunderstorm with lightening that seemed to last forever. We rocked and bobbed up and down; at times it felt like an elevator, but that wasn't the scariest part. I was flying without a companion and the big jetliner was practically empty....truly practically empty. Really felt alone....ominous flight for me.Anyway, FLIGHT OR FRIGHT is a variety of horror, sci-fi and murder-mystery....plus one poem. There are plenty of spooked passengers (for various reasons), zombies, aliens and some super weird and creepy monster stuff as you travel these skies.My top six of seventeen favorites:1) Joe Hill's - YOU ARE RELEASED. By far, the best. (for me) Real life fear.2) Roald Dahl's - YOU SHALL NOT GROW OLD. Memorable time travel.3) Arthur Conan Doyle's - THE HORROR OF THE HEIGHTS. Wait till you see what's way up there in the danger zone!4) Richard Matheson's - NIGHTMARE AT 20,000 FEET. Remember the freakish Twilight Zone episode? Here you go.5) E. Michael Lewis' - CARGO. Creepy sad.6) Stephen King's - THE TURBULENCE EXPERT. Mortal fear of flying required!Overall, a pretty fine anthology of old and new. Oh and....Would I fly again. Absolutely! Just hope I don't forget to pack FLIGHT OR FRIGHT!------------- ----------- ---------- ----------

I’ve been a King “constant reader” since 1981 snuck a copy of Carrie into my unsuspecting hands. I’ve been close to caught up with Sai King’s output since my sophomore year of college when the unexpurgated Stand probably cost me a few letter grades worth of skipped classes. As you can guess from this review my copy of Flight or Fright arrived today, and first down the hatch was the King story without a moment to waste. A fun little tale with a creepy edge, as expected from a master of the form. As Mister King has almost a quarter century on me, I suspect I’ll have to do without new tales from him for a few years, once he makes his exit(hopefully many a few decades away from now). Lucky for me he’s planned well, and based on “You are Released”, I’ll be in good hands. I know it’s not a competition, but Joe owned his dad on this one. Joe’s contribution made me want to hold hands with folks I’d normally despise and maybe I can remember that next time someone’s politics start to blind me to thier humanity. For almost four decades Stephen King has been a constant voice keeping me happily up at night, but for all the books, movies, tv miniseries and comics, I’d like to thank him the most for Joe Hill.

This is a great little book with a variety of craft projects for Minecraft enthusiasts. None of the materials involved are overly expensive, and all of the projects are well within the capabilities of the average person, except perhaps for the crochet. However, I already know how to crochet, so that will not be an issue for me. These are fun and simple projects and will be fun to do with the kids. I would totally recommend this book.

I have never seen not cared to know anything about minecraft. All I know is my nephew loves it. I wanted to get him something minecraft that would actually get him away from the tv screen for awhile. This was a huge hit. I don't know anything about it other than he loved it.

Really fun book! I pained the canvases using the templates and directions provided in this book. There are some projects that we can't do because I don't know how to knit or we don't have all the supplies, but overall the ideas are fantastic and the kids LOVE looking through the book to get their own ideas on what they want to create or draw. I hope to complete several of the projects for our kids who are Minecraft fans.

I used these as party gift for girls video game party. The girls loved the book and i got several notes from moms after the party saying what a cute idea this was and asking where i got the book!

My 7 year old likes to look at this book, but honestly all the ideas in this book are easily found on the internet (Pinterest). He appreciated the Perler Bead patterns inside. I feel this book is best for older kids, ages 8+

I like the variety of projects and the many, many pictures that can help give you ideas for branching out on your own. Directions for the ones I've done have been solid and comprehensive. Good choice for a crafty mom looking for projects to do together with a Minecraft-obsessed kid.

Great book! My son is a huge fan of Minecraft and while searching on Amazon for stuff to buy for Christmas I stumbled upon this book. Being that his birthday is in February and the theme will be Minecraft, I just had to buy it. When I received the book in the mail, I couldn't wait to open it up and check out all the crafts. I'm so glad I found this book.

I bought this for my 9 yr. old grandson who is all things Minecraft. He was thrilled. Some things he can do on his own. Some with help. And some his mom will do for him.

Nice guide book but a little flakey regarding the criteria for inclusion. As one revue mentions, state parks are pretty much omitted, understandable in a book pertaining mainly to tent camping, but some ARE included and those that are don't seem to be any more "tent friendly" than the ones omitted. But if you're unfamiliar with camping in Missouri (or like me, completely unfamiliar with camping in Arkansas) it's a good place to start.Another resource to check out, if you really are into tent camping, is the conservation nature areas run by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Some of those have camp sites available. You can find a list of those that have camping sites available on the MoDOC website. Be advised though that those are primitive sites (i.e. no amenities at all except, perhaps, a vault toilet). But if that's your bag, that's another resource to check out and you can rest assured that there'll be no RV's there.To sum up: Not a bad beginners guide. Information listed is solid. Presented in an interesting manner. Solid buy as a beginners guide.

I have really been enjoying Best Tent Camping: Missouri. Don't listen to any bad reviews. If you are looking for a simple picture book or a novel, pass on by. But if you are looking for a new perspective on a camping guide, pick this one up. The author talks a lot about his favorite campsites based on their seclusion from others and the beauty of the grounds. That being said, he also covers campgrounds with activities for the kids and which one could be fun for partying. There is a little something for everyone. It's laid out like a guidebook, but the language is straightforward and very easy to understand. A fun read!

It only covered SE Missouri and NW Arkansas. There's a lot of good tent camping in the rest of Missouri and Arkansas Ozarks

I'm not sure what's with most of the new camping books that are being written but the lack of complete information makes me think you're just better off doing an internet search. How does a book that list best camping sites in Missouri leave out Roaring River. It's a State Park for one thing, not to mention probably some of the best trout fishing in the state. It's listing in the index as being on page 82 but page 82 has information on Council Bluffs. That's just poor editing. What about Montauk State Park? Nothing!! So right off the bat I search for two STATE Parks that I'm interested in and find nothing. I understand you as an author can't visit every single campground in the state but you could at least cover the state parks. Do that or do an internet search yourself and put something in the book about them to make me feel okay about funding your camping trip and mine too.

Provides good information for tent camping locations. Some of the trout parks are left off, but I am guessing that's because they are over populated. Looking forward to trying a few of these places this year.

Very useful in planning a week long camping trip in MO. Recommended.

Choupette: The Private Life Of A High-Flying Fashion Cat by Flammarion, this book really describes Choupette from birthdate( weight, height, fur and eye color, etc), species, temperament, leisure and lifestyle, servants, diet( a chronicled collection of the famous feline's favorite recipes), habits, likes and dislikes, even the cat's original owner and how Lagerfeld came to adopt Choupette. It does encompass the love Karl Lagerfeld truly felt for her and the photographs were an attribute to the book. Choupette has a beauty regimen and a fashion muse. Fashion-forward photoshoots grace the book as well as Choupette's personal luxury luggage and tech to give the reader a graphic display that some cat's have all the luck! Flammarion also breaks the history of the species; Birman. Choupette is from a sacred line indeed and Karl revered him and served Choupette like a queen.

I find Choupette delightful and have read a number of articles about the feline muse. If you have done that as well, you may be a bit disappointed in this book which offers some general cat tips and recipes for Choupette's favorite dishes but very little new information. I was hoping for more anecdotes and photos of the diva herself. Should there be a follow-up, I'd hope for more Choupette. The cover photo is wonderful,though.

LOVE this book! As someone who loves fancy cats and coffee table books, this is the perfect mix! She's adorable and I love seeing all the pictures, recipes and hearing about her day to day. I wish he had more books on her haha.

As an article of high camp, for someone who is a cat lover and/or a fan of the Smartest Man in the World podcast, this is a must-have! Just realize that Karl is ... well, kind of a scary freak. But he has a very cute, pampered cat!

This is a cute book but i was hoping the photography would be better, the pictures were kind of blurry and low quality.

Choupette: The Private Life of a High-Flying Fashion Cat was a Christmas present for my daughter (on Christmas list - she's 23). She absolutely loves it. It combines her two loves, fashion and felines and it will be a perfect addition to her already expansive collection of beautiful coffee table books.
