Now- if you are experienced enough in cookery, the evocations might help you make really good meals.However, it seems to me that many of the meals that could be made in the rice cooker are somewhat like stunts: yes, you CAN make it in a rice cooker, but it'd be much more practical to make it in other ways.-But that is assuming you have other ways to cook- and if you do not- well, this book gives some guidelines on how to use a rice cooker to cook healthy and wholesome meals all on its own.It was a fun read, regardless.I pretty much use mine only for cooking grains... but it's brilliant at that, and so is one of the few appliances (the other is the Kitchenaid) that has a permanent spot on my counter.If all you can have or store is a rice cooker- this will help you make wholesome meals with it. If ytou have a more extensive kitchen- it's got some good ideas, but is not as useful.

This is definitely NOT a step by step, add these ingredients, follow these steps kind of cookbook. And I imagine that more than a few purists and self-styled gourmets will turn their noses up at it, but it is very entertaining and informative. If you enjoy Ebert's writing style (and share or at least understand his world view) I can almost guarantee you will enjoy this (cook)book.In a nutshell, this is a book about how to make good food easily, with a minimum of fuss or equipment. And at least 90% of the time, that is all I have time (or energy) to do. The overriding theme seems to be shortcuts and simplicity, and at least in my opinion, that is a very good thing.

I gave this book five stars because it prompted me to buy the cheapest rice cooker I could find (as recommended therein) and follow a few directions and experiment. Experiment I did, combining one of the suggestions from the book with a recipe I found on the web and then changing ingredients to match what I had on hand. Result? A delicious meal for family of 4 with little effort on my part. (In fact I dictated the instructions to my 14-year-old grandson over the phone so all I had to do at home was finish the preparation by throwing in a few handfuls of egg noodles and some fresh broccoli and waiting about 20 more minutes.) Yummy. Chicken drumsticks in sauce with noodles and broccoli cooked in rice cooker. Who knew?

Arrived on time and in good condition - I guess I'm used to more specific recipes (and I usually adjust from there) - Mr. Ebert kind of uses the attitude of put what ever you feel like/have on hand into the pot .

When I heard about the passing of Roger Ebert I was sad...I was aware that he had written a small book on the use of the rice cooker...ordered it to mark his passing...am happy, that I did...it was a fast read, about 100 pages...it gave some new ideas on using my rice cooker...I use my microwave too much...this book got me making fresh items and using new food ideas.

This is a most entertaining treatise on rice cookers, food and those we love. Reading it was such fun; it made me wish I were as fortunate as Mr. Ebert's friends, and had known him personally. The recipes, though, will do as well, or better, prepared with other equipment, except for rice itself, of course. I too, love a rice cooker--it cooks rice wonderfully.

I bought this after finding myself in a position where I needed to learn to cook with no pots or pans. He opened me up to a world of possibilities of dishes that can be made with a rice cooker. I liked the creative aspect of his cooking, although with little experience, I wished for more recipes and less blog re-posting. I enjoyed the book and I've learned a lot about making healthy, tasty meals for my family and have this book to "blame"for my culinary successes!

A most pleasurable read, to be sure. Perhaps I'm not quite adventureseome enough (yet!) to try my hand at some of the ideas in it... But it does inspire, to be sure.Not so much a how-to or a cookbook, as a lovingly written tribute to a grossly neglected and underrated household tool and ally.Posthumous thanks to Roger Ebert for this lovely book. Rest in peace, Roger.

I love Roger Ebert and his writing. It's his wonderful writing that make this an engaging book. If, however, you are looking for hard core recipes, this is not the book for you. Most of the recipes are supplied by posters on his blog. I would have loved more recipes, but that would have gone against Ebert's philosophy of a little of this and a little bit of that. It's all very loose.

A most poignant work at this time when talk of walls has become respectable, even fashionable; a magnificent celebration of the vast open border between the US and our closest sister and best neighbor.My own experience with this book goes back to the late 70's when I first encountered it in the University of Maine library. I recall that it could not be checked out, but was available for enjoyment in the main reading room. A few years later, my appreciation of the wonderful open border grew as I entered Canada on a dirt road through a potato field in northern Maine. There was only a small shack on the side of the road, and a sign requesting that you please sign in if you planned to be in Canada for more than 48 hours.... different times, and far better, to my thinking.So sad to see this fine book and thoughtful gift from the people of Canada being sold for a pittance, but a magnificent reminder of a more neighborly age.

I will echo Linda Burger's praise for this lovely, big, rich book,and say simply that while the new price might be mighty dear,the Marketplace has copies for less than can be shipped by MediaMail (7cents + $4 < $5.50 postal rate)!? -- and on up, from acouple dollars, twenty-some, and beyond. I just bought fourcopies for a total under $100, and have previously had oneshipped overseas for a good price. (6.6-pounds or more!)The beauty of this book can't be overstated. The color images at times are, yes, not as super sharpas some in good photo books -- depends on how enlarged the image is. But they are shot by goodphotographers and cover such a range -- of landscapes, people, places. It would be nice were thetext for each image given with the image instead of in appendices (1 each for French, English),but I guess that the space demands, as well as artistic aspect (they have quotations associatedwith images), indicated that they needed to be separate.NB: Page 47-8 of the only two copies I've seen had a small tear about center height near the binding;it's as though maybe a coin was pressed there and tore a quarter arc, except that the tear isn't so much an arc,and there is NO sign of pressure -- just a tear. THis is hard to see in the images (front/back), and is simplyredressed by touching the white of the tear w/ink to darken and hide it. Must've been some production glitch.HIGHLY recommended.

I have bought a copy of this book for each of my siblings. It's a beautiful remembrance of the relationship between the US and Canada, love the photographs.

I have wonderful cousins from Prince Edward Island who visit me in Maine at least twice a year. Their company is all the gift I want from them, but two years ago they bought me this book in our favorite used book store near my town."Between Friends/Entre Amis" presents photographs of landscapes and people along the 5,522 miles of the International Boundary, embellished with quotes in English and French from a variety of sources (including my subject line, which is attributed to Sitting Bull, Chief of the Sioux). The original edition was produced in 1976 by the National Film Board of Canada; the photographers' brief was to interpret places and people where there is "a sense of the border present in the daily lives of the people that live there." The beautifully produced book was a gift to the United States on the occasion of the Bicentennial.The book is divided geographically into five parts. The first few times I looked at it, I was captivated with the spectacular scenery shots; but over time I've come to treasure the photographs of people in all their simplicity and diversity.Some of my favorite photographs, by section:THE NORTHWEST -- Full of rocky peaks; the snowy Boundary Mountains; the braided White River that carves itself a new channel every year; Chuklat Village in the mist; a young girl in braids and a big smile in Eagle, Alaska.THE ROCKIES -- A snowy, cloud-shrouded mountain road in Manning Park, British Columbia; two retired Olympic Peninsula loggers standing tall in front of a truckload of logs, one wearing a string tie with a starfish clasp; a Canadian ranch with a looming U.S mountain as backdrop; mule deer on a hillside near the British Columbia-Washington border.THE PLAINS -- A small white church with leaded windows and a steeple, alone in a wheat field under billowing clouds; a sheep farmer in a dim barn with his flock of sheep, light slicing in sharply from a window; a rainstorm far across a field in Manitoba.THE LAKES -- A woman fishing through the ice with a shiny silver pile of fish in front of her; The Outcasts, a cheerful-looking motorcycle club in Detroit; a group shot in a Boy Scout campground; a railway bridge over the Niagara River gorge; the St. Lawrence River.THE EAST -- An "international pool table" straddling the NY-Quebec border; a ballerina whose kitchen is in Canada, her living room in the U.S.; snow geese migrating across the St. Lawrence River; a grinning team of ice hockey players; the members of the world's only international Masonic Lodge."Between Friends/Entre Amis" is a wonderful book produced to a fine concept. I inherited this book from my parents, but I remember when they received it as a gift from their dear friends in Vancouver. Interestingly, the Canadian couple were also hikers and mountaineers like my parents, and both men were housing economists for their respective governments.It's a really wonderful volume, not only full of wonderful photographs, but also full of interesting details about life along the border, from Saskatchewan wheat fields to Detroit slums. As with many things we receive from Canada, this book is a wonderful gift.

One of the best cookbooks I have found and I have hundreds.

Beautiful book, great creative recipes. If you're a real chocolate gourmet who loves artistic foods this is the book for you!

I have made a couple of recipes from this book. The pictures are stunning, and I like to support a company that has a social conscience. I really like the Dark Chocolate Mousse Cake (which can be cut into pieces and frozen and keeps really well) and the chocolate mousses. However, I made the brownies and there were way too sweet. Then I started looking at the quantity of sugar that most recipes call for, and discovered that they are really overly sweet. I think you can probably make most of these treats with only half the sugar. In any case, a worthwhile buy.

Fully illustrated, this publication includes annotated descriptions for each work, as well as two essays on Hasuia (TM)s life and work by Dr. Kendall H. Brown. Kawase Hasui (1883-1957) is considered the foremost Japanese landscape print artist of the 20th century, and he is most closely associated with the pioneering Shin-hanga ('New Prints') publisher Watanabe ShAzaburA (1885-1962). Hasuia (TM)s work became hugely popular, not only in his native Japan but also in the West, especially in the United States. His valuable contribution to the woodblock print medium was acknowledged in 1956, a year before his death, when he was honoured with the distinction of a ~Living National Treasurea (TM).

Kawase-sensei's beautiful woodblock prints capture the transition of Japan in the early 20th century from a traditional to Westernized society. This book is more accessible than the huge coffe-table edition of all of his work, and much less expensive. The historical and biographical essay is very helpful for providing context.

Hasui is one of art's most special, precious jewels, which this lovely volume faithfully conveys. What more can possibly be said about Kawase Hasui? I have a little something to put his achievement in perspective. A long time ago, the Classical Chinese playwright, Guan Hanqing, living in the Yuan dynasty, wrote a play called "The Riverside Pavilion." In it, one of the characters quotes a verse (the original source of which is unknown to me); she says:"A lonely village in the rain,A mountain in the snow,Although they seem such simple thingsAre hard to paint, you know."It's still true today. I have no idea if Kawase Hasui may have read this play in his early years (perhaps doubtful but who would really know), yet he completely fulfills this challenge as no other artist ever has. That it happens in the difficult medium of the Japanese woodcut is all the more remarkable. To see the village, to see the rain, to see the mountain, to see the snow, to see the breathtaking prints in this book is an experience that lasts a lifetime. It is truly filled with visions of Japan.

This book has many reproductions of this wonderful artist. I have loved his work for decades after I first saw one of his paintings on a card. I mostly love the Temples and the snow scenes, but he was so good at making woodblocks of nature. It was interesting to know more about him and his life and to see pictures.

The aesthetics of Shin-Hanga and in particular Hasui's prints appeal to me greatly and this collection is just stunning. I have also enjoyed the sections that tell his story and his comments about his own work. Will treasure this one!

When I think about a master of quality in Japanese printmaking a few artists immediately come to mind: Hiroshi Yoshida, Paul Jacoulet, and Kawase Hasui. This little paperback book is jam packed full of color woodblock prints,...page after page of an artists masterful works. If you are not fond of landscapes this is not for you, but if you enjoy Japanese printmaking, this book is an absolute must. The simple compositions, the colorful gradations, and the mastery in image, carving and printmaking comes through on every page. GET IT NOW!!!

I bought this book from Amazon.con after seeing posters of his prints (The Pagoda in Moonlight and the Benton Shrine over a lillies pond).I also saw his framed woodblock prints in Japantown in San Francisco. Very rich colors. Stunning, comparing to his posters and calendars. Only a few hundred $$$. Buy me one of those for Xmas, please.Check them out when you are in San Francisco.

Joseph Silk's "Horizons in Cosmology" isn't just a great non-mathematical introduction to cosmology and galactic astronomy: it's a fascinating portrait of how science develops by what our theories *don't* explain. It represents a brilliant snapshot of Astronomy at the beginning of the 21st century. In this respect, Horizons is quite different from Silk's textbook "The Big Bang".This book contains the clearest explanation of galaxies I've ever seen: Silk's work in galaxy formation gives him an insider's view of what we know (quite a bit), what we don't (a whole lot more), and what we really *need* to know. At this point, the "big picture" of Cosmology is pretty well established: the Universe began in a big bang about 14 billion years ago, then slowly developed into a web of galaxies influenced by dark matter and energy. However, the details of how galaxies formed and how they develop through time is much less clear. Supercomputers are not yet much help: the physical processes at work in the growth of galaxies so complex we can't yet build realistic simulations. More critically, scientists haven't yet figured out how the many processes of feedback and environmental interactions fit together (you can't simulate what you don't understand.)Again and again, Silk's explanations show the bleeding edge of theory: each successful model somehow raises as many questions as it answers. Though the book is non-mathematical, Silk's exposition is rigorous and detailed - this is not in any sense an easy-reading book. However, persistence brings real rewards.For the last several years, I've been involved in the Galaxy Zoo project [...], where volunteers classify images of galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Hubble space telescope. Great read! As someone from Hershey, I found the depiction of the town to be spot on! Kurie does a great job describing and dissecting the relationship between old "Hersheyites" who grew up in the 1950s and 60s and the "Newbies" in town as well as the complex and often contentious relationship between the townspeople and the trust. Highly recommend for anyone interested in learning more about this historic place!

"Can business take care of people? Can it build and sustain communities? Can it save lives?" The ramifications of these questions, asked by Kurie in the introduction, take the importance of this book well beyond the boundaries of the town itself. You need not have grown up in ol' Chocolatetown, nor even have visited, to learn valuable lessons from this example (and from Kurie's great work in investigating it). Though, as someone who did in fact grow up there, I enjoyed one interviewee's assessment of Hershey as being "a very expensive fantasy," and I applaud Kurie's inclusion of the union history (e.g. the '37 workers' strike) and current struggles in international labor rights in the town's often sugar-coated story.

Well done, Mr. Kurie! It was fascinating to learn so much about the history of the town named for the man behind the Hershey bar, the Milton Hershey School Trust and its multi-billion dollar endowment, and the ongoing controversies regarding the management of this charitable trust. The author tells of the uniqueness of Hershey, Pennsylvania from its inception to today, and one gets the sense that change is not welcomed by many of its residents. IN CHOCOLATE WE TRUST gives the reader much food for thought.

I adored IN CHOCOLATE WE TRUST. It is an inspiring story beautifully and brilliantly told. The author has combined the mesmerizing human story coupled with Milton Hershey’s business acumen and vision. The resultant trust turned thousands of disadvantaged children into productive citizens for more than a century, delighted billions of chocolate lovers around the globe and benefited thousands of patients of the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State Children's Hospital in Hershey.For me IN CHOCOLATE WE TRUST was a personal journey. In the 1960s my wife and I got involved in the (then) little-known sport of curling in Darien, Connecticut, where we participated in competitions (called bonspiels) with curling clubs around the East. One of the most active was the Hershey Curling Club (since disbanded) where we went on several occasions. During one week, I met a pilot for Allegheny Airlines(forerunner of US Airways) who had bought a house in Hershey and regaled me with stories of life in Hershey. For example, on his first morning he arose at 4:00 a.m. went down to the kitchen to make coffee and read the paper. It was his regular routine that cleared his head before driving the 12 miles to Harrisburg to catch his first flight of the day.Staring out at the darkness that first morning he noticed an automobile heading past his driveway. The car stopped, the headlights were turned off and the driver sat in the darkness for a few minutes, then turned on the headlights and slowly moved on. Same thing the next day. And the next. And the next. The following week his phone rang. It was the Hershey police who said he probably noticed the car at the end of his driveway in the mornings. As a new resident, the police wanted to get a sense of his daily routine, so if anything changed they would be alerted. Another story the pilot told was the town’s tree trimming service. Hershey workers would come by in the fall, trim all the dead branches and stack them in the woodpile. No charge—one of the benefits of living in Hershey. When I recounted this story to friends, some felt creeped out. Others, including me, loved the idea.We also got to know members of the Hershey Curling Club—among them Joe and Muriel Eby. Joe was a lovely guy who founded a local real estate company. Low key and self-effacing, Joe never talked about his 37 missions as a bomber pilot over Germany in WWII and his 6 oak leaf clusters.One day at breakfast he mentioned he had been a student at the Milton Hershey School in the 1930s and asked if we would be interested in seeing the school.
