Highly religious anti-Biblical assessment contrary to Biblical truth, contrary to anthropology, but oh so trendy and politically correct.
I have been slowly working through this book for about two months now. I read an essay, then I tend to go and watch the video of the original presentation from the conference. And then I sit with the content for a while and go to the next.I just finished the chapter by Jonathan Tran on whether Asian American students should voluntarily give up on their desires to go to Harvard as an act of racial solidarity. There is far more than just that in the chapter, but the reflection on our current 'post-racial' reality that many want to assert, the Christian concepts of choosing to do or not do something on behalf of another, the working through of the place of Asians in a mostly Black/White racial binary were all excellent and helpful. The title essay by Wille James Jennings does eventually get around to yes White people can be saved, but in a similar way to Jesus' response to the rich young ruler, we (I am White) can be saved only if we give up that part of us that is hindering us from salvation. Of course, there is no salvation apart from Christ's work. But scripture also points to hinderances from salvation and the grappling with what that means was very helpful. The essay that I think was probably second most impactful for me was Andrea Smith's "Decolonizing Salvation". While I am not new to liberation theology and Black church, I have only read a few things about Native American or Indigenous theology and she brought a very helpful perspective on areas of theological blind spots.I will update more later. But I have found this book extremely helpful and even though I am not done, I am irritated by the one star review every time I look at this book.
