What can be said about a book that's already a classic? Well, there are some good, swift kicks in the rear, for one thing. Writing is serious business, and Pressfield brings that home in a way you won't forget. If you're tired of messing around with unfocused writing and a career that's in puzzle pieces, this book helps you get where you keep saying you want to go.
Stephen Pressfield returns to the theme he developed in the classic “The War of Art†of professionalism versus amateurism. At the most basic level, he wants to encourage aspiring artists to give up the life of the dilettante who dabbles in multiple artistic projects but always succumbs to “Resistanceâ€, and to embrace the life of daily combat against all of the forces of resistance. The book largely consists of Pressfield’s contrast of these two themes. His vision of amateurism is better defined. The amateur is the one who always succumbs to Resistance, even builds a life and career around Resistance. One common manifestation of this is the self-sabotage of addiction or compulsion; another is the building of a “shadow career†in which the trappings of success hide the secret truth - known only to the would-be artist - that the artistic impulse has been denied or betrayed.Pressfield says surprisingly little about professionalism. There is almost nothing about the habits of successful writers and artists, except that one must show up every day and fight the forces of Resistance with the courage of a warrior. Perhaps this is enough, or perhaps this is all that can be communicated.Either way, the larger point is that Pressfield is advocating a kind of Gnostic conversion. He references Gnosticism and the mystical ways of thinking in neo-Platonism, Kabbalah, and Eastern religion throughout. We live in the corrupt material sphere, and Resistance is the malign force that keeps us from ascending into a higher plane of existence where creation can occur. Resistance pressures us to conform ourselves to the material world, and to deny our own authenticity. Only the daily struggle against Resistance, carried out through courageous and habitual confrontations, can secure us our authenticity. The Gnostic turn is strange, but central. He starts from the theme that we are all exiles. Traditional religious faiths teach that we are alienated from God; modern psychology uses the model of disease and therapy. Pressfield offers a third way of approaching this fundamental human experience of homelessness, and seems to encourage the creation of a community of self-aware artists.
This is an interesting read. First of all, it's short. Some of the "chapters" are one page or less. It has a new-agey feel that's not uncommon in the self-help genre, but at the same time, you get the feeling that Pressfield is sincere about the message--even when the message is somewhat unclear. It feels like he's so sincere, in fact, that he's trying to think of every possible way to communicate the theme of the book, in case you missed the message the first ten times. There were pages/chapters in this book that I really connected with, and there were pages/chapters that I re-read several times and still had no idea what I was supposed to glean from them. In those cases I gave up and moved on, and I'm pretty sure I didn't miss anything. So why am I giving this 4 stars?I'm a programmer by trade, but what gives my life meaning is music. In particular, writing songs is something I've aspired to do well, with sporadic success, for most of my adult life. I'm also in my mid 40s, and I'm a husband and a father. I had all but capitulated to what Pressfield calls the "resistance" -- the force that pulls you away from your art, and lulls you into apathy. In short, I wasn't writing, and hadn't been for many years. I read this book a week ago, and immediately carved out an hour a day during my hectic weekly schedule to start paying my dues to the muse. Wrote two songs. Neither one is great, but I wrote them, and I plan to keep on writing, and improving my craft, because this is _really important to me_.Thank you, Steven Pressfield.(Also, his novel Gates of Fire is amazing.)
I heard about this book from listening to a podcast by Master Coach Brooke Castillo. She carried on about the author, his books and his influence on her.I was listening to this before take off on a flight from San Diego to San Francisco for work. I down loaded the book quickly before take off. It's short, in your face and to the point. I loved it and will read it again. It's about taking stock and reflecting on your own story. I nearly finished it before landing.Hey reference Ryan Holiday and his books. Ego is the Enemy and the Obstacle is the way. I blasted though both of those books too!I'd read it again!
If I hadn't read previous books by the same author I may have given it a four star rating. But, despite being enthusiastic and inspiring in typical Pressfield manner, I believe that this book is simply another take on the same material contained in previous, more substantial books by Mr. Pressfield. If we were friends, I would kindly suggest he may have exhausted this theme. If it is your first book by the time his author, it is probably worth it. Personally, I found myself skimming it for new information. The authority, energy and inspiration are there, but I found myself wanting for that little bit of something new.
