When I first heard about this book while the author was on his book tour, he was described as this kid who'd been unable to find a job as a journalist who had flown to Somalia. So, I had thought this book was an account of how he'd survived after doing this incredibly stupid thing. But in reality he was much smarter than that, he planned his adventure so he had a greater than 50 percent chance of coming home. He hooked up with a local agency that provided him with UN trained bodyguards, secure housing, translators, clan access. So, he wasn't stupid which makes the book much more interesting to read. You get the sense that the local people appreciate that an outsider sat down and let them tell their story, even if their story strains credibility frequently. It is a remarkably fair and balanced account. It is a lively fact-based story.Where it failed for me was the epilogue where he comes to the conclusion that the solution to the problem is a generous influx of cash with few strings attached. The solution to most problems -- the US educational system, third world garbage pickers, the end to our reliance on fossil fuels, unemployment -- could all be fixed by massive influxes of non-judgmental cash. One more set of people with their hand out, saying just trust us, we'll make somebody's life better, we'll get back to you on that, doesn't really convince me at this point.

"Pirates of Somalia" is a stupefyingly audacious book. Actually, it brings it a far bit short to call Jay Bahadur's work simply a "book." It's more life-altering project. Bored writing marketing reports, he conceives an idea to fly to Somalia and get the straight scoop on this international phenomenon by talking directly to its protagonists. Amazingly, he finds a willingness in the people he writes to and - a mere weeks later - he's winging it into a nearly ungovernable country meeting up with contacts heretofore unseen. Say what you want about the book's execution, but in terms of sheer audacity of action: Hats off, my man. Bravo.I knew I was in the right place when Bahadur's references Aidan Hartley's The Zanzibar Chest early on. I view Hartley's book as a masterpiece of reporting and memoir. It's easily one of the best five books I've read. Bahadur quotes a passage in which Hartley "describes in chilling detail the life-and-death importance of clan lineage during the worst days of the [Somalian civil] war." If you see Hartley as your model, I'm in.Bahadur focuses his reporting on the Puntland State of Somalia, the hotbed of piracy. He seeks to cover what he enumerates as the "four main causes explain[ing] the rise of piracy in Puntland: geopolitics, environmental factors, economic adversity, and breakdown of governance." What makes the book sing: this is no armchair analysis from a comfortable, far-away seat. This is face-to-face, winning-hearts-and-minds, chew-the-khat, ride-the-Toyota Surf-to-the-small-village, meet-the-elders, hire-the-bodyguards-and-translators reporting. Very, very well done.

Bought the book after watching the movie. Book story line feels redundant at times but otherwise is quite captivating

I gave this 3 stars (almost 4) but just could not do it in good faith. I really admire Jay for justdoing this book in the first place. For those who are interested in how and why the Pirates gotstarted....it's a good book. Some of the book is a little boring....but I did get through it. Thepirate "business models" seemed a little contrived....but who knows...they may be "right on"I liked his discriptions of the towns and some of the characters he met. The bottom line of this review is that if you liked any of Riordan's previous books you'll like this one also. It has all the features we've come to love about Riordan's books. We have young protagonists who are suddenly empowered with great abilities but are at the same time expected to deal with great challenges and shoulder enormous responsibilities. They are aided by more mature allies but ultimately they shoulder the burden alone. The action is fast paced and almost non stop with frequent changes of locale both in the familiar mundane world and a fantasy world. Much use is made of ancient myths and legends (in the present case Egyptian) which are contrasted sharply with and integrated curiously into modern times. The latter is a primary source of the book's humor.There are a few things that a prospective reader should be aware of. First, the book is the second of a three volume series; they should be read in order for maximum enjoyment and the least confusion. None of Riordan's series can be jumped into at any point. Second, Riordan in this series changes points of view between siblings Carter and Sadie every two chapters. It can be a little difficult to climb out of one character's head and into another if reading for extended periods. Third, like all Riordan books the present book is heavily (and ingeniously) plotted so there is more than a little demand on the reader's attention; read at least a chapter or two at a sitting.Highly recommended. Adults and children alike can enjoy this series.

As a huge fan of Percy Jackson, I was so excited to continue the adventure with The Heroes of Olympus. After reading this book, the first in the series, I'm neither satisfied nor disappointed. It was nice to dive back in to the world of Camp Half-Blood but I just couldn't get too involved with the new characters like I did with Percy and his crew. I also purchased the second book to try and get more into it, that book will determine whether I continue the series or not.As for if I would recommend this book, I'd say it's worth a try. :-)

I love a good book. My favorites are usually modern day stories about normal people with a little bit of magic thrown in to make it interesting. I originally started reading the Percy Jackson series because my granddaughter liked the movie. So I bought her the series and we read at least a chapter or two every time we spend a few hours together. My girl does most of the reading and I sort of explain the parts or words she doesn't understand. We've almost finished all of the Percy Jackson series. And I must confess, since I read just a bit faster, I've moved onto the Lost Hero series. It started a bit slower than the other books. But as I read the story I found myself wondering how it was going to play out. Greek mythology is just as fascinating as Roman mythology. I like that they're being mixed together and how these series are overlapping. The message I see in both series is one of honesty, and friendship and trust. The concept of right and wrong should be installed into young people at an early age. Age appropriate explanations of actions and consequences. These books have helped my granddaughter, who is just about 8 years old, to learn to think about what will happen once she has said or done something. I'm thankful there are stories that have captured her interest and attention. She is also beginning to understand that the lessons these books are helping her to learn will help her throughout her life!! That is the best compliment I can give to any author and his/her stories.

Rick Riordan starts another great story! I am a great fan of Percy Jackson, and was excited to see a new series. The author introduces new characters but has not changed his style of getting you to know and care about them, until they become real people to the reader. Too many dismiss books nowadays as copies or derivatives of older well known works. In that light , everything can be considered a copy of something else. I always approach a book or series to see if it can grab my attention and invest me in the story or characters. Rick Riordan has not disappointed me yet.

I really like Rick Riordan's books, starting with Percy Jackson series. I like that he uses mythology and humour in his books. I have always loved mythology and this is a great series to get my sons reading. In fact, it was my oldest son and my sister who got me into Riordan's books.This is the second book of the Kane's Series/Egyptian Mythology. This is written in first person from each sibling's point of view (POV). Each chapter is a different POV. Some writers have a hard time writing different voices for their characters and when they try this the characters sound the same. However, Riordan does a good job of keeping Sadie and Carter's voice distinct.I bought this one to replace the one that disappeared. It has been awhile since I read the Kane Series.

WHAT A BOOK!!! For anyone, and I mean anyone, who has ever been subjected to the line of thinking that money is somehow bad such as the quoting of the often misunderstood passage in the Bible about it being easier to thread a camel through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven, this and the other books in this series BLOW THAT CONCEPT RIGHT OUT OF THE WATER! After reading this book and the rest in the series, I was left seriously wishing that, as a former licensed member of the clergy who was called in a different direction to serve the Lord, I had never quoted that passage in the Bible out of context. I have heard it quoted out of context by the clergy so many times I lost count a long, long time ago. This book is so well researched and is written by an author who takes her work seriously that there is zero room for arguments that money and having it is bad. This author has done a magnificent service for humanity by writing this book. It is a little tedious reading. However, if you have ever struggled with a conflict between being spiritual and still being able to be rich, this and the other books in this series will end that conflict once and for all.

I bought all of her books, and read them from time to time. Affirmations are very useful- if you are already in the feeling place of having what you want. Secrets of the Richest Man Who Ever Lived covers similar ideas. I find that The Power of Your Subconscious Mind,The Neville Reader: A Collection of Spiritual Writings and Thoughts on Your Inner Power to Create an Abundant Life,Saving the World using the Law of Attraction: It always begins with a small group that starts talking,The Reality Creation Technique,Benevolent Magic & Living Prayer, also help to flesh out what she talks about. These are a lot easier to read than the classic New Thought books. You have to get out of your head, and into your heart. You cannot create from your head. You have to get the "flow" started, to see anything happen, this is why tithing works. What happens for you will be unique to you, not necessarily like what anyone else gets. Also, with all these methods, the stuff that happens seems like it would have happened anyway, which, if you think about it, is pretty powerful. I mention other books, by way, because sometimes the most valuable part of a review, for me, on a book I really like, is the mention of similar books. I have found some gems that way. I encourage others to do likewise.

This book and author have literally changed the trajectory of my life! I've began to manifest things in my life that I've never even imagined! I'm well pleased! I have purchased 4 of Mrs. Ponders books and oh the confidence and reassurance her wealth of knowledge has brought to my life! God used this vessel to open my eyes to a broader picture of HIM!!! Thanks you Mrs. Catherine Ponder!!! I AM IN ALIGNMENT WITH DIVINE PROMINENCE FOR MY LIFE NOW!!!

So I have this book 5 stars because it opened my eyes to do many new concepts and ideas. I like that it isn't just a get rich quick scheme, but a concept based upon biblical principles. She encourages tithing, forgiveness, nonresistence and gratitude. Great book if your mind is already open to this way of thinking and the power of the mind.

Excellent book!!!!!! it reminded me to to tithe my way back to financial freedom and ultimately to wealth, good health, protection, substance and a life of abundance. This book is not by any means a "how to" book, or contains any meaningful discussion of technique. It is a catalog or other sales tool for Murray Carters knife making business. Lots of pretty pictures of knives (mostly the kitchen variety), some *extremely* brief discussions of the forgecraft Mr. Carter employs, but not likely enough to appreciate or learn those techniques without an undue amount of wasted time and material--even if one can get past the preachy, self-promotional writing style.For whatever reason, there is the usual Health and Safety stuff, which should be obvious ("red hot steel shouldn't be touched with your hands cause its hot" or "wear safety glasses" sort of thing) and then ignores further mention of blacksmithing fundamentals. There are a few pages on various steels, some by their commercial names and others by composition, which is kind of nice, but there is barely enough to get started and someone with a reasonable degree of experience will likely know about the materials mentioned. Making handles and sheaths is summarized in few pages. (Surprisingly, Loctite and 5 minute epoxy is apparently within the boundary of "Traditional Technique". Who knew?) Sharpening and surface finish is dealt with in a similarly truncated manner. Its almost as if Mr. Carter had been thinking at some early point about writing a book about basic blacksmithing employing some of the body of Japanese technique, but forgot what he was doing a few pages into each chapter.This volume is unlikely to teach much, if anything, of practical value. It does not offer basic/intermediate/advanced or culture-specific technique. People looking for information on the construction of Japanese cutlery, the design or reasoning behind the shape of the wide variety of knives available for various tasks in the kitchen, would be sorely disappointed. (Alex W Bealer's book, "The Art of Blacksmithing" is a much better general discussion of the topic of blacksmithing and a useful teaching tool, and Leon Kapp's volume, "The Craft of the Japanese Sword" has far more coherent discussion of blade construction and finishing techniques of Japanese forgecraft, to name but two infinitely superior alternatives.) "Bladesmithing with Murray Carter" is merely a 160 page infomercial for Carter Cutlery, and one in need of an editor at that. I got my copy for $5, and somewhat resent having wasted that much for so little.

A great book for both a someone who wants to learn how to forge a blade and intermediate smith looking to learn some new skills when forging a blade. The book is more geared to learning the Japanese style of forging a laminated blade, However the hammering technique can easily be applied to forging western mono steel blades.This book using easy to understand language walks you through each step needed to forge a blade. It covers everything from steel selection, Damascus and lamination techniques. It even covers how to properly sharpen a blade using sharpening stones. I have about 23 years of experience sharpening blades and even I learned how to put an even better edge onto my blade.This book is now a favorite of mine that I will likely go back and read every now and then. I highly recommend picking this book up regardless of your bladesmithing experience.

This book is more about techniques than principles. He teaches the old school method of Japanese blade smithing, with a faithfulness to the tradition almost on the level of an historical re-enactment. He insists on annealing in rice straw ashes, and he imports all his pine charcoal from Japan. The book ONLY covers Japanese techniques, but if that's what you're looking for, this is basically a good book. There are lots of god quality pictures (though I think it would be better if he'd included more pictures of the involved processes and less pictures of himself).

Bladesmithing with Murray Carter is a must have for anyone interested in Japanese style bladeware. Visually stunning colour photographs of Carter Cutlery's kitchen and other utility knives complement the detailed information on the creation of these works of art and function.This reader friendly volume is both instructional and informational and has enough to satisfy collectors, knifemakers and those simply fascinated by Japanese cutlery. I personally found the section on the author's perspective on the differences between the Western and Japanese knife traditions to be especially interesting. A real eye opener.The serious student of the forge ( myself included ) with some bladesmithing experience will find this volume to be a valuable resource. A comprehensive work containing detailed chapters on forging, lamination, grinding, sharpening and blade straightening using the author's own experience gained from his extensive study and training at the craft in Japan.If you are an absolute beginner at knife making I would strongly suggest that you purchase this book along with Tim Lively's CD "Knifemaking Unplugged" and the volume "Blades Guide To Making Knives" ( available at Amazon ). For more on Japanese blademaking read "The Craft of The Japanese Sword" by Leon and Hiroko Kapp with Yoshindo Yoshihara. The rest is getting your hands dirty, starting small and lots of practise at the forge.Definitely get Bladesmithing with Murray Carter. You will be glad you did.

To be the best, you have to be born with the ability AND the drive to develop it fully. Murray has done this with knifemaking and we aspiring bladesmiths are in his debt. Pictures and explanations are great. He can be a little pretentious, but it is not too hard to get past that, just roll your eyes and appreciate the skills being taught.

I read the 'New Diet Revolution' book in around 2004 and for 6 months or so it really helped me and my health and also helped me lose weight.Dr Atkins is a brilliant doctor and author and in my opinion, human being.But. I'm not a fan though of the idea that losing a ton of weight per week is healthy, nor that soy products or rice cheese is a health food, or that Splenda or saccharin or protein bars are health foods. I also don't agree that commercially farmed grain-fed meats and commercial diary products are health foods and found it disappointing that pasture-fed meats etc. weren't talked about in the book.While the Atkins diet is hands down better than any low-fat or low calorie diet out there, it is not one I would recommend to others any more. I feel there are better ones out there, which take the best of what Atkins has to say and go a bit further with making it a really healthy diet.I did really well on the original Atkin's diet with 20 grams of carbohydrate a day diet for 6 - 9 months or so. I felt well and had no more hypoglycemia and lost a lot of weight. But after that 6 months was up my body seemed to really struggle with it, perhaps due to the fact I have severe metabolic, endocrine, and cardiac problems. (I'm housebound and 95% bedbound and very disabled.) When I finally went back up to 50 - 75 grams of carbs a day (years later) I felt so much better, and finally was able to start losing some of the weight that had crept back on on my super-low carb regime. It was also a much more pleasant way to eat; being able to have 5 cups of veggies a day and a bit of fruit! Not eating so much meat was also WONDERFUL!!! I feel like staying on this super-low carb diet for so long delayed my health from beginning to improve as well, as it made my body work harder than it had to on food assimilation which of course leaves less metabolic energy and bodily resources left over for the work of healing.Books such as Perfect Health Diet: Four Steps to Renewed Health, Youthful Vitality, and Long Life explain that eating very low carb and making your body convert proteins to carbs puts strain on the liver and uses up bodily resources, generates ammonia as a toxic by-product, puts a person at risk of glucose deprivation if the are ill or lacking in certain nutrients and makes nutrient deficiencies more likely due to lower fruit and vegetable intake. Very low carbohydrate intake can also cause problems with vitamin C utilisation that may even lead to scurvy, as vitamin C is stimulated by insulin. For these reasons they recommend eating an amount of carbs daily which is very close to how much the body actually needs; 200 - 400 carb calories daily (or roughly 50 - 100 grams of carbs daily). I agree with these authors that healthy people will likely have few problems converting one macronutrients to another (such as protein to carbs, and carbs to fat) but for those of us that are ill it is best to save your body the work and to eat foods in the appropriate macro-nutrient percentages to start with. That just seems to make so much sense!I really regret staying on Atkins as long as I did. But I just couldn't accept that the book was wrong, or that what worked for a while so well might be no longer working somehow. My very poor health is now finally very slowly improving and I feel my dietary change is playing a significant role in that.Where Dr Atkins really excels is in his book on nutrients and orthomolecular medicine. If you buy one book with Atkins written on the cover, make it Dr. Atkins' Vita-Nutrient Solution: Nature's Answer to Drugs for sure! That is a real 5 star book. It is still one of the best there is on this topic. It is an amazing achievement by Dr Atkins. I still refer to it regularly. I think it has just been re-released as an ebook too.For books on eating low-carb and high fat, and how to eat the foods we were designed to do best with and so improve your health through diet, I instead recommend books such as Primal Body, Primal Mind: Beyond the Paleo Diet for Total Health and a Longer Life (by far the best diet and health book I know of) and also The Primal Blueprint: Reprogram your genes for effortless weight loss, vibrant health, and boundless energy (Primal Blueprint Series) and Perfect Health Diet: Four Steps to Renewed Health, Youthful Vitality, and Long Life (without their 'safe starches!).5 stars for the work of Dr Atkins but only 3 stars for this problematic book.Jodi Bassett, The Hummingbirds' Foundation for M.E.

Just like any other fad diet, people will loose weight by cutting the carbohydrates from their diet. However, once people begin to add carbohydrates back into their diet, the weight returns. I have two friends who have followed the plan and when they "strayed" from the plan, they gained weight. What's the point of being able to have the sour cream when one can not have the potato! I found the diet far too restrictive. It sounded like an easy plan to follow from the start, but I quickly discovered how restrictive it was. It just goes to prove that the key to dieting is moderation and exercise. We all have the "tools" to do it without following any fad!

I tried out this diet after reading his book. It didn't work. I didn't lose any weight. I gained weight when I got off the diet. I should have read up on him before I read the book. There are many theories out there. But this physician died in 2003 considered 40 to 60 pounds overweight at 258lbs and had a history of congestive heart failure.
