Amazon.com Review

Sure, many of us in this modern world are cynical. The most cynical may even suspect that the news is manipulated and massaged by sponsors, that corporations act in their best interests, that political campaigns are determined not by votes, but by bucks, and that we don't get "all the news that's fit to print" but instead, "all the news that gets the ink". But even the most media-savvy amongst you will be awed by the behind-the-scenes descriptions of the Public Relations industry in action so masterfully described in this book. If you want your eyes to be opened, open them upon the pages of this book. (But remember: there are some very important people counting on you, and they really would prefer that you didn't ever hear about this book, much less buy it.)

From Publishers Weekly

Stauber and Rampton cite a classic example of image manipulation in this chilling analysis of the PR business. During the aftermath of the 1975 Three-Mile Island nuclear accident, a company spokesman said that a spark in the accumulated hydrogen bubble could result in a "spontaneous energetic disassembly"?otherwise known as an explosion. The authors trace certain specious practices of the $10 billion PR business to P.T. Barnum, who in 1836 wrote anonymous pro and con letters to editors about himself, generating heated interest. Modern public relations has evolved "crisis management" and "anti-" PR campaigns including sabotaging the tours of authors who challenge industry clients, for example, Jeremy Rifkin, author of Beyond Beef. The new euphemism for sewage sludge, "biosolids," is part of a campaign to convince the public that municipal sludge, replete with an astounding array of toxic substances, is good for farm soil. The authors point to Business for Social Responsibility, an organization that includes The Body Shop, Ben & Jerry's and others, as now containing "some of the most environmentally destructive corporations on the planet." Giant agencies extend their contracts to selling national policies, as Hill & Knowlton did in selling the Gulf war to the American public. Although most large news organizations at least rewrite PR materials, many smaller markets "rip and read" prepackaged video news releases. This is a cautionary reminder that much of the consumer and political world is created by for-hire mouthpieces in expensive neckties. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Want to know what is really going on behind closed doors? Want to know the ways in which the PR industry manipulates and lies to the public? Want to know who to trust? (Hint: Almost no one). This book really opened my eyes to the fact that we are manipulated by media from the moment we wake up until the moment we close our eyes at night. This was required reading for my Ethics in PR class in college. The book is somewhat dated, with most of the incidents taking place prior to the internet, but don't be fooled by online content either. The internet has only made it easier for the common person to be duped by big business.

Over two hundred and ten pages of tantalizing and juicy behind-the-scenes info that most of the general public is either ignorant about or could care less. This book is broken down into twelve seperate chapters; each chapter covers an important area of PR manipulation. The chapters are as follows:1] Burning Books Before They're Printed2] The Art of the Hustle and the Science of Propaganda3] Smokers' Hack4] Spinning the Atom5] Spies for Hire6] Divide and Conquer7] Poisoning the Grassroots8] The Sludge Hits the Fan9] Silencing Spring10] The Torturers' Lobby11] All the News That's Fit to Print12] Taking Back Your Own Back YardWhile reading this book, I really get the impression that the PR specialist are "artist" in their own way. Using the art of subtle manipulation and various other sneaky methods, these "story-tellers" are painting a picture of reality that puts the most positive light on some crummy issue, or corporate entity. While I always hear someone say 'you can't always believe what you see or read', I can't help but wonder if these people really understand the extent of their spoken words. This book will help shed some light.

Toxic Sludge is an expose of the Public Relations industry covering some of the worst examples of corporate greed and government perfidy up through 1995. Readers of Bernays' Propaganda and Larry Tye's The Father of Spin: Edward L. Bernays and The Birth of Public Relations might enjoy this book also. The book documents some truly abhorrent corporate behavior and shows how effective PR can be in supporting the powerful against the public interest. Think of this book as a prerequisite for the next level of analysis: Why does PR work so well, and how can we combat it?

an enlightening collection of articles that expose the PR scandals and ongoing campaigns of misinformation that cover our brains like so much toxic slime. The information is intelligently presented and serves as a primer on knowing exactly what is going on. Like the "War on Drugs," we unfortunately buy into way too much propaganda and yet we still call ourselves a "free" society.Libertarians and Ralph Nader wannabes everywhere should seriously consider ordering and reading this thorough and strangely entertaining work of illumination. It misses a point for being kinda pricey for its size (compare with "Everything You Know is Wrong.") Ironic - given its subject matter of being duped.I'm glad I got it, though.Just say Know!!!

Excellent, I love this book and the information in it is to be used in every classroom. Teachers, take a look at it and bring it to the students.I loved to learn about the tricks that corporations have used to make profits while disregarding the damage they have done to the environment and lied to use about it.This book illustrates how much of what we think of as independent, unbiased news and information has its origins in the boardrooms of the public relations companies. What your student will say after reading this books is something in the lines of:"Where have I been all this life?".A must read.

Edward Bernays flips in his grave. Everyone seeking the truth about issues should read this book. There is lots of information out there regarding propaganda/marketing/public relations - but this book cobbles the realities together into a form that really shows! how bad off we are today regarding seeking the truth. A must read for any environmental activist types.

Good

I borrowed this book from a friend and one chapter into it, I had to purchase a copy for myself. It is one of my favorite books and I often refer back to it. It gives really detailed insight into the PR industry. Surprisingly, it doesn't come off as preachy but just sticks to the facts. I have personally interacted with a "front group" for a fuel company claiming to be an environmental actvist organization similar to those outlined in this book and can testify that their tactics were just as Stauber describes. Please get this book. Everyone needs to be armed with this information.

This book is not really for the novice nor for the contemporary Shinto acolyte. Hardacre traces the development of Shinto from a more political and academic aspect than any spiritual discussion. This shouldn't be too much of a surprise considering her previous book was about State Shinto, and, in this book, she more or less pulls together the development of State Shinto from Shinto's pre-"Shinto" beginnings (This is a debatable point, which is why I said it like that). She also discusses the structure of Shinto religion and a lot of technical information on shrine building and development, but for someone like me who is more interested in the development of "Modern Shinto" from the nascent writing in the 7th-8th C, it was a great read. She does discuss other historians and their take on Shinto, and, oddly, she spends very little time on actual discussion on what nationalism is, but, again, I suspect it is because she already expects the reader to have some background in the historical and historiographical discussions about "Shinto" and its involvement with Buddhism, politics, and the shift in Japanese mindset in the mid- to late-19th C.People who dive into this without much historical background are likely to be overwhelmed by most of the rhetoric, although I have to hand it to Hardacre, her writing style is less bland than most writing in history. Her chapters around 1853 through 1952 (Black Ships through official end of US Occupation) were great from a historical point of view. Again, unsurprising considering her strengths. She writes right into the Heisei (now), but I have to admit I was somewhat disappointed at her lackluster discussion of it at the end, especially given the developments in Japan over the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and their love of State Shinto, especially since the 1980s. I would like to see more movement into Abe's administration.Again, her discussion of nationalism, bolstered by briefly mentioning scholars like Walter Skya, was rather lacking in such an ambitious book. But I give it 5 stars because, as a developing academic in Japanese/Shinto History, I loved this book.It was an in-depth read that I always wanted on the topic, warts and all.In other words, for this book, it is better to have some knowledge of other writers in this area. She does take from well-known scholars in Shinto, such as DC Holtom and John Breen, but I'm not sure I would have got as much out of this without a long bibliographical reading list to back me up. She did lead me to Japan's Holy War: The Ideology of Radical Shinto Ultranationalism (Asia-Pacific: Culture, Politics, and Society), which is an interesting look at Japanese Nationalism. Regardless, this is for scholars more than the public. Great book!

I was looking for a nuanced history like this--but for the non-scholar it is a bit hard going, because the history is not only so carefully documented and specific, but includes figures (priests, scholars, and gods) of medieval Buddhism. (All the Japanese terms and phrases are transliterated into romaji.) The book lays out well the scarcity of information prior to the eighth century, and then proceeds to carefully parse and integrate "shinto" aspects of belief and ritual with Japan's adoption of Buddhism and the ongoing changes of its governing structures. I haven't finished it, yet, but all along the author also traces the aspects that will be incorporated into later reinventions of what Shinto means within the culture. With an extensive bibliography of up-to-date studies in Japanese. A reliable and judicious survey.

When it comes to writing history, the use of chronology as an organizing principle may seem like an inevitable choice. An historian may have to account for something that is thousands of years old. What better place to start than at the beginning? In the case of Helen Hardacre's Shinto: A History, however, I'm not so sure. This is because what constitutes Shinto and separates it from other religions (if Shinto was a religion) was not properly formulated until after the arrival of Buddhism and Confucianism. Even then, any proper analysis was / is murky due to the syncretism of Shinto, Buddhism and Confucianism throughout Japanese history.Beyond writing this review, my primary motivation in reading Hardacre's study was to understand how Shinto works. Although Hardacre did get there eventually, the largest part of Shinto: A History consists of an incredibly detailed account of the institutional / bureaucratic manifestations of Shinto from the Council of Divinities (Jingikan) in the seventh century to present day Heisei. The clearest and most complete exposition of what Shinto is and how it operates in Japanese society is to be found roughly halfway through the book in a section on Shinto theologian Hirata Atsutane (1776-1843). Atsutane built on earlier Kokugaku (National Learning) thought that posited that the Emperor was at the head of the Kami and that the Kami were subjected to him in the same way that the subjects of the realm were. Atsutane's genius was in integrating ancestor worship and the simultaneous presence of spirits in the spiritual realm and the manifest world. (339) When combined with prayers at shrines and household kamidana, "The effect is to bind the worshipper into a hierarchy of Kami stretching from the emperor and the highest Kami down to the ancestors, from the beginning of time to the present, creating an image of a single community, including the ancestral Kami, united through worship of the Kami." (342) Ancestor worship is a lineage-based system – a bloodline, if you will – with the Kami as its source. The Emperor is a living Kami and all Japanese both alive and dead are related to this main line of transmission. It is interesting to note that up until the death and resurrection of Christ, both Judaism and early Christianity were lineage based. Jesus was a direct descendent of King David. The passing of the baton to the Apostles rather than to an heir (Dan Brown notwithstanding) revolutionized the transmission system in the West. By making the Holy Spirit available to lowly fisherman, tax collectors, and Gentiles, Christ shifted the power structure from a bloodline or lineage-based system to a spirit system available to all.As Hardacre makes clear, Shinto was predominantly a closed system expressly formulated to reflect Japanese circumstances. Although various Shinto theologians did attempt to fashion Shinto into a complete world view so that it could stand up to Buddhism and Confucianism, Shinto was never meant to explain how things worked outside of Japan. To put it another way, I can be a Buddhist or Confucian in my home state of Maine. But no matter how many times I climb Mt. Katahdin or worship our governor, I cannot practice Shinto there. In the final third of Shinto: A History, Hardacre takes issue with the characterization of State Shinto as being largely responsible for the rise of Imperial Japan and its conduct during the Pacific War (1931-1945). Although a case could be made for Shinto being used to instill notions of patriotism and sacrifice among the populace, Hardacre writes that: "The Occupation view of Shinto in relation to militarism or nationalism was, however, unbalanced and distorted . . . virtually all other branches of Japanese religions up to 1945 similarly devoted themselves to prayers for military victory, exaltation of the martial spirit, and justification of Japan's supposed mission to rule all of Asia." (444)The surprising thing to me is not that Buddhism was involved in the war effort – after all the Catholic Church gave Hitler the green light – but that a military man like Douglas MacArthur and his cohorts at SCAP understood Shinto almost as well as Hirata Atsutane did. Those who see religion as a myth-based code of values subject to rational analysis fail to understand its true nature. Any religion worthy of its name is nothing more than a power structure designed to attract and deliver power to the spiritual entity that it serves. It does this by eliciting a pledge of devotion during a person’s lifetime. Once the pledge has been given, the die is cast and the soul is in thrall to whatever spiritual force it has given its allegiance to.From his time in the Philippines, MacArthur understood that a Japanese soldier in service to the Emperor could not be defeated short of annihilation because of the way Imperial Japan was configured. Each individual soldier was part of something stretching backwards and forwards in time that crossed the boundary between the living and the dead. State Shinto had tapped into the local power supply at every village shrine and hamlet and added it to the grid. The only way to ultimately defeat something like this was to dismantle it.Fortunately, what is true for Shinto's negatives (how it might be utilized for militarism) is also true for its positives (how it might be utilized for community). In a chapter called "Shrine Festivals and Their Changing Place in the Public Sphere" Hardacre shows us that Shinto festivals are very much a part of contemporary Japan. While visits to Yasukuni Shrine and the separation of church and state remain controversial, the vast majority of Shinto observances and rituals are peaceful and life affirming. State Shinto may be gone, but the Kami are very much with us.From the review published in Kyoto Journal 90.

How can I rate a book that I can't even read and use ?. I just wasted my money, don't waste yours.

I speak French, Spanish, and some German. I was born in this country. I dread teaching this book, because it's actually hard to figure out, and I feel I'll never be able to put it across to a student. The problem is, English is a really hard language. I know the grammar perfectly in all the other languages I teach. I'll never understand English grammar, although I write in this language; and I'll certainly never figure out how I learned to pronounce it!

I really like books written by Ken. These books are practical and concrete, they are always full of good examples, and, in addition, they are interesting and fascinating. This last book perfectly helps me and my family to travel and be correctly understood everywhere: in Prague, in Rome, here's Copenhagen ... Thank you, Ken! I'm waiting for your next books!

I have a good level of english but my pronunciation was very thick. I took on some very expensive pronunciation classes but couldn't notice any progress until I got hold of this book I enjoyed the lessons and it has dramatically improve my communication skills and increased my confidence level.

I have always had trouble with pronunciations. My adult children tease me. This has helped me a lot. I will definitely re read this book and continue to practice

Ken's books are always very practical. And this book is the most useful pronunciation book with so many exercises for the mouth muscles to practice everyday. Thanks Ken.

A person with the same difficulties, and the same challenges who master the English pronunciation is someone with authority to advise and give me the tools that works.

Nevertheless the cultural differences between the eastern and western countrys, this book offer practical solutions to soften the mother accent and speak in English with great confidence

How can you praise writing on a subject so desperately avoided by so many? Only if you are one of those whose imaginative spirit soars beyond the burdens and vissiitudes of this earthly realm.which involves much more than a stoic realism or a cavalier shrug of indifference that refuses to accept the inevitable. I encourage the general population to get in touch with this subject through the careful and compassionate life experiences and writing precision of Richard Morgan. You will be rewarded. ---- Wesley Stevens.

Although I am biased (Richard L. Morgan is my brother), I found this book of few words a gift for those who are facing death, whether their own or loved ones. It's the kind of book you can hand someone in these situations to help them see they are not alone.

We are using this book as a study guide in our church group. The lessons are short but we are having good discussions based on them and there are thoughtful conversation starters and good reflective exercises.

At the Edge of Life is a lovely book about finding and giving peace at the end of life. Highly recommend for those searching for resources to deal with the passing of a loved one.

A difficult subject for many people, but an honest and straight forward book. I would recommend it.

Great information about how to talk/approach someone in failing health. And a good read for personal use, and self assessment.

I have had the privilege of getting to know Rev. Dr. Richard Morgan as we have worked together to convene the national network, ClergyAgainstAlzheimer's. In his latest book, Dr. Morgan draws on his 60 years of experience as a pastor, hospice chaplain, and friend to all, to offer perspective and advice to people coping with a family member, friend, or patient who is approaching death. Serving in these roles, he has learned "either to be still or to carry on a conversation with those who are dying." It is these final conversations that form the heart and soul of his book. Dr. Morgan wrote "At the Edge of Life" to help us listen, talk, and relate to each other so that those of us who remain behind are able to both give and receive the gift of this final conversation. Reading this book is like having a conversation with a kind and trusted advisor. The result is a sense of peace that gives readers confidence as companions to the dying, allowing us to speak with gratitude and from the heart.

One of the final tasks in life for all people is to fully come to the realization they will die. It is also the hardest tasks to ever complete because it is a task best done in dialogue with others. This dialogue is never easy because there is a public conspiracy of silence about death and many of us have a strong personal denial of death. This quick, easy read makes this task of talking about death not so daunting because it helps a person overcome the conspiracy of silence about death in others and the denial of it in ourselves. It does this by helping to jump-start the conversation about death. The hardest step in any unpleasant task is getting started. Most of us just don't know how to start a conversations about dying with our loved ones or ourselves. This book eases you into this first step and all steps which follow rather than jar you into them. This book's first step is to help us discover when and how to begin to talk about death with others. It next prepares us for the conversation with loved ones when they die by having us practice talking with them as they die and then gently asks us to imagine our own deaths from someone else's vantage point. Each chapter contains questions like this, and move to exercises designed to give us practice in holding these discussions about death. When we become comfortable with these questions it leads to comfort with our own answers and the answers of others. I wish I had this book when I was a parish pastor. The church's role in it's parishioners lives is to help them to live and die faithfully. Many of our church members are however terrified of death. The opposite of fear is faith, and so this book could help our church members overcome their fear of dying through being full of faith and thus be prepared to live and then die faithfully. I have been recommending this book during workshops. It is the single best book on death preparation. The season of Lent is a perfect time to do a special study about death and dying at church, when the church follows Christ to the Cross. This little book is divided into four sections which lends itself into doing it during Lent by doing a before and after discussion with the books sections sandwiched between.

Review

"Hadriana In All My Dreams is a compelling monograph. Surreal and imaginative, it is written with a dark richness and poignancy that is void of sensationalism and hyperbole. This is fictional realism at its best, and author René Depestre proves his salt as a master craftsman."--The Gleaner (Jamaica)"The story is an extended love letter to author René Depestre's hometown, its creole culture, its architecture, and its annual Carnival. Visitors to Jacmel can trace the exact route of the narrative through the streets of the town, and next to the crumbling, stately mansion Depestre depicted as Hadiana's manor, a public staircase is decorated with a mosaic spelling out the opening lines of the novel."--Caribbean Beat Magazine"The most important thing a work-in-translation can offer a reader [is] perspective on a place, people, and language we don't immediately have access to, or one that runs counter to conventional, cliche narratives. Glover's book does that in aces."--Words Without Borders"Zombies, voodoo, and a sex-crazed boy–turned-butterfly are all facts of everyday life in Depestre's...colorful, magic-suffused novel."--Kirkus Reviews, Catherine Hickey's Foreign Influence column"A slim and beautiful novel about death, sex, and Haitian myth...A dreamlike novel that blends eye-witness testimony to the possible zombification of Hadriana with the villagers' erotic and fanciful half-memories of Haiti's thorny history."--Kaima L. Glover (translator), Chicago Review"The story is beautifully written in lyrical prose...Readers interested in Haitian culture will appreciate this novel and will enjoy Depestre's details about the voodoo culture as it was understood in the first half of the 20th century."--Historical Novels Review"An exceptional novel...Depestre's masterpiece and one of the greatest examples of Haitian literature."--New York Journal of Books"You've never read about a zombie like Hadriana. Transformed into the walking dead on her wedding day, Hadriana becomes part of popular legend, one imbued with magic, eroticism, and even humor."--Tor.com"You do not need to believe in zombies or Vodou to be carried away by this story--a metaphor for all forms of dispossession. . .René Depestre has gone beyond nostalgia to write a sumptuous love story."--Le Monde"Depestre, a grandfather of Haitian literature, spins a sensuous romp that serves up equal helpings of the historically contemplative and the handsomely entertaining...Hadriana in All My Dreams opens its narrative palm cheekily, cleverly, to reveal the kernel-truth of Jacmelian life, of a resurrected beauty's power beyond pulchritude. It's a story that contains its own universe, tucked irresistibly into an evening’s riotous, ruddy-cheeked read...suitable for sneaking into weddings and funerals alike."--Caribbean Beat Magazine

About the Author

René Depestre, born in 1926, is one of the most important voices of Haitian literature. A peer of seminal figures like Aimé Césaire, Pablo Neruda, and André Breton, Depestre has engaged with the politics/aesthetics of negritude, social realism, and surrealism for more than half a century. Having lived through significant moments in Haitian and New World history--from the overthrow of Haitian dictator Élie Lescot in 1946, to the first Congress of Black Writers and Artists in Paris in 1956, to a struggle with Haiti's François "Papa Doc" Duvalier in 1957, to a collaboration with Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara and a fraught relationship with Fidel Castro in the 1960s and '70s--Depestre is uniquely positioned to reflect on the extent to which the Americas and Europe are implicated in Haiti's past and present. He is the author of Hadriana in All My Dreams.Edwidge Danticat was born in Haiti and moved to the United States when she was twelve. She is the editor of Haiti Noir and Haiti Noir 2: The Classics, and author of several books, including Breath, Eyes, Memory (an Oprah's Book Club selection), Krik? Krak! (a National Book Award finalist), The Farming of Bones (an American Book Award winner), and the novel-in-stories The Dew Breaker. She has also written several young adult novels and a travel narrative, After the Dance, A Walk Through Carnival in Jacmel. Her memoir, Brother, I'm Dying, was a 2007 finalist for the National Book Award and a 2007 winner of a National Book Critics Circle Award for autobiography. I found it hard to tear myself away from this tale of love and vodoo. So glad amazon recommended it!

Several years ago, I was doing research on Haitian Vodou and was surprised to find so little authentic material out there. Only two sources provided glimpses into Vodou's mysterious beliefs and practices – Zora Neal Hurston’s Tell My Horse and filmmaker Maya Deren’s documentary, “Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti.” Both Hurston and Deren spent considerable time in small Haitian communities, gaining the trust of the locals, in order to gain unprecedented access to rites and ceremonies that outsiders normally never see.I’ve never encountered any fiction that has done justice to this misunderstood religion; it all tends to focus on the more sensationalistic elements (e.g, ritual animal sacrifice and zombies), but Rene Depestre’s amazing Hadriana In All My Dreams rectifies that. Briefly, it tells the story of a beautiful and much beloved young French woman who dies at the altar on her wedding day, in front of the entire Haitian village of Jacmel. But she isn’t truly dead. She has been turned into a zombie by an evil sorcerer who wants her for his own. The tale unfolds through the eyes of a teenaged boy who is a confidant and secret admirer of Hadriana, as well as Hadriana herself, who recounts her horrific experience of being trapped in a seemingly lifeless body while the townsfolk and her family argue over her funeral rites. While this might all sound like the stuff of horror fiction, Depestre’s novel is actual filled with ribald humor, steamy sexuality and ultimately, romance. The funeral itself, which coincides with the village’s annual carnival, is chockful of glorious details of Haitian Vodou traditions and ceremony. It crackles with the fire of the genuine. It does not shy away from things that Westerners might view as primitive or naïve, while at the same time, it does not sensationalize them. If anything, the story exudes a warmth and familiarity that could only come from a native son of Haiti.I am so glad I was introduced to this little gem. I went in looking for an education and left with a love story that was by turns fanciful, comical, suspenseful and thoroughly engaging.

Translated from French, Hadriana In All My Dreams is a tale of zombies and romance, Voodoo and eroticism in Haiti in the late 1930's. The narrator tells the tale of Hadriana and others who come into contact with supernatural forces, and the beliefs of the Haitians in the city of Jacmel. Depestre does a good job contrasting Voodoo and Catholicism and the relation of the native islanders to Hadriana and her family, a weatlhy white family from France. Eroticism plays a significant part of the tale, an aspect of Voodoo I was unaware of. Some of the language used related to the erotic details seemed a little off or forced, so it was helpful to read to interpreter's notes at the end where she says " figuring out how to translate Depestre's twenty or so terms for human genitalia indeed had me stretching the limits of the English language" to make me forgive some of the terms used that seemed unusual and at times, laughable. The author paints a vivid picture of Haiti and the island and its culture are one the centerpieces of this novel and I feel handled very well. The story itself bogs down in the middle- there is a lack of suspense at points, I feel - without giving much away, I will only say certain outcomes seemed inevitable but a number of pages were spent where the tale didn't seem to get any closer to resolution. Overall, the descriptions of Haiti, the contrast between Voodoo and Catholicism as well as the wealth white French family and their relations to the Haitians made this a good read and make me interested to seek our more of Depestre's work. Thanks to the publisher Akashic Books for the advance reading copy.

Depestre's novel is beautiful depiction of Haitian culture, the likes of which I had never been exposed. The story of Hadriana Siloe's tragic death and the following complications between her family's Catholic faith and the town of Jacmel's Vodoo traditions sets up a wonderful story of cultural melding, communal loss of a beloved child of the town, and enduring love. Patrick, the narrator and close friend of Hadriana, takes the audience through the tumultuous events leading up to Hadriana's wedding, death, and zombification while ever lamenting the loss of his beloved. The novel is riveting, inspiring, and absolutely fascinating.
