I had to get this book for an ECE class that I am taking. To be perfectly honest, by page 4, section 1-3, the author lost credibility with me where the section reads "Socialization as a unique human process." *long pause* Really? The first sentence reads, "Most social scientists agree that socialization is unique to human beings because humans can think." *long pause* Really? Socialization is universal to all beings on this planet. All animals are socialized into their packs, pods, flocks, etc. by their parents whom teach them how to find food, shelter, and play. This alone is a testament that, yes, animals think. That's not just a human thing. While the scientific proof that animals "think" may not be in the ECE realm of study, I think it's relatable enough that more in-depth research should have been done.Secondly, while I now felt like questioning the validity all her resources, I was really put off by the section on discipline (as negative reinforcement) where she has a "source" that promotes punishment, such as spanking. She wrote that there are cons, but the section is heavily slanted towards discipline as beneficial. "When using punishment, be aware of the negative, as well as the positive, consequences for the child." (p. 62) Again, really? Punishment is usually used because the person in charge doesn't like something and wants something different; thus, the "positive" outcomes are really a perception of the punisher getting what he/she wants.Ironically, I'm taking a different ECE class that has a book promoting the exact opposite of this book where it states that there is no room for discipline in an ECE environment, thereby promoting guidance instead. You don't have to agree or believe me, but please use your own mind and judgment. If something in this book isn't right, then feel free not to believe it. Just because something is written in a book doesn't make it accurate.
Definitely worth renting! This textbook is SO expensive and I am not sure why because it is a paperback. Nevertheless, I rented it from Amazon for a fraction of the price to purchase brand new. It was supposed to be a used rental, but mine was brand new and I was extremely pleased! I was actually reluctant to return it because I really liked the content of the textbook and thought it might come in handy even after my degree is complete. I can't say that about too many of my textbooks. I enjoyed the course as well.
I LOVE this book! I used it in class and then ended up keeping the book because I refer back to it so often. I am a family child care provider and a parent as well. I refer back to it for my own children as well as helping educate parents on issues. This book offers a wealth of information regarding parenting styles, education and learning styles/envirenments, developmental stages, ect. I loaned this book out and the woman who borrowed it REFUSES give it back (or even replace it for that matter) so here I am giving up the fight and replacing it myself since I find it so valuable. When I first purchased this book it was almost 200 dollars- Amazon prices are a steal! I would highly reccommend this book to any parent, childcare provider, or teacher even if you are not required to use for school.
Way cheaper than buying books. Electronic is easy to mark and find what I am looking for.
For the book for my son for school. Used it and sent it back.
It is an e-book with insightful information on family and community.
I bought this book new and since it was new I assumed that I would have an access code to Mindtap which I have to have for the class.
The book was in good shape and it's perfect for the person who doesn't want to spend hundreds of dollars on books. This is a great way to save money.
